This is how players are coached in the modern game col to turn their backs to the opposition when they're getting onside… The theory is they can get onside quicker if they're running forward than if they're running backwards like the old days. In saying that though they are supposed to be looking over their inside shoulder at the play the ball whilst getting onside.

And if they see someone coming they can stick their leg out and trip them

Hahaha that seems to be the go this season, once upon a time this was a send off offence.

Tripping, players staying down… It's becoming more like soccer, isn't it. :astonished:

It's not really that stupid, you can get back onside faster if you're running in a forward direction. When you say you see players running into the back of a defender these players are still getting back the 10 so they are offside if they're running backwards to get onside these defenders will still be in an offside position so they can't make the tackle anyway or they give away a penalty… I think our side give away far too many penalties as it is. Watch the games this weekend and you will see every team turns their backs on the opposition to get back the 10 metres. The defenders will run in a forward direction glancing over their inside shoulder at the play the ball and as they reaching an onside position they spin and turn towards their inside shoulder to face up for the next tackle

That's a good idea if you can rotate your head 360 degrees.
What happens if the runner takes off on the way your head is not tilted?
By the time you turn your head and then have time to react they're under the posts - like we see every week.
Simple fact - good players don't turn their backs and take their eyes off the play.
It was lazy play 100 years ago and it still is.

Yes you're right, cktiger mentions that he sees some players getting run into the back of or have players run past them and score. This is because we aren't dominating the tackle and they are allowing quick play the balls. You will get caught out whether you're running forwards or backwards to get onside if you're not dominating the ruck
