What your team needs in 2017..WESTS TIGERS

Too many clubs will step up in 2017 who finished below us in 2016

This I think is the biggest issue. We should have walked into the 8 this year.

No use making the 8 if your not going to be competitive when you get there …...

The two form sides going into the semis handed our butts on a platter within 3 weeks of each other

Stumbling and bumbling your way into the Top 8 can do more harm than good in my opinion (would of been nice )

Makes people think things are OK when they are not

I'll bet we don't make the 8 if we keep basically the same squad from 2016

Too many clubs will step up in 2017 who finished below us in 2016

I'll take that bet…How much ?

IMO of the sides that made the 8 this year Dogs Titans will struggle Canberra have a habit of having a sensational year then faltering the next...Penrith were inconsistent all year but put together a great backend..Cracks started to appear for Unca Wayne and his Donkey's ..

The sides that missed I can see the Roosters Parramatta improving ...I think Souths and Manly will struggle again ..can't see the Dragons Newcastle improving dramatically and the Warriors are the Warriors..

We have the ability to compete most weeks...Taylor needs to find the way to narrow the gap between our best and worst performances which happened to a degree post Origin..if that can be further achieved in 2017 we can build on 2016...

I don't agree with this at all. We have to perform to our potential and we aren't doing that. We have a good squad. Other teams that are underperforming also have good squads. It's not acceptable to just state well we are working on this or that.

We should be making the 8 this year. There are some gaps in our squad but geez it's pretty good.

As for our second row let's look at both teams:-

Melbourne have Proctor & Harris.
Cronulla have Lewis and Graham.

I think both teams have better second rowers than us and it's not close but I also think that is a weak point in our team. Lawrence when in form can compare with those players. We need someone else to kick on to round that position out.

Our front row/lock combinations though are up there with both teams. Bromwich, McLean, Finucane for Melbourne with a fairly weak bench for Melbourne & Fifita, Prior, Gallen, Tagatese & Heighington for Cronulla.

We have Woods, Grant, Sue, Ava, Felise & ET. That is a good combination. I think it's better than both grand final teams.

I just don't see our team as being a team full of dud players. We've got a lot of quality in our side.

I think our players tend to get rated way too harshly on this board.

Must be the coaching then…

$20 scratch it once the squad is finalized , if I think we haven't improved enough I'll take that bet

Fair enough

Probably the supporters ….

I'd like to see Sue & ET play in the 2nd row. Should sure us up defensively on the edges & also add some harder running & ball playing in attack. Lawrence to start at lock rotating with Aloiai & a prop rotation of Woods/Ava/Grant/Felise. Liddle to take the last bench spot.

That's if we don't make any further signings in the off-season of course.

If you're rotating front rowers (which is guaranteed), rotating the lock and the hookers (Ballin/Liddle), that's your 8 interchanges gone with nothing left for injuries.

I'd prefer an 80 minute lock. Even "swapping" locks mid-game would leave us vulnerable.

You need and 80min lock and hooker. At the outside maybe 2 hookers but ideally 1.

I honestly thought that the reduction in the interchange numbers would have had a greater impact on the game but that hasn't happened.

Woods can play long minutes ( between 60-70) and controls our middle defence so well from up front.
ET and Lawerence are our two lighter forwards that can also play long minutes.
Ava and Sue were solid in 2016 without being spectacular.
Looking forward to seeing more of JJF and hopefully Alioia goes in confindence because 2nd row is our weakest position and most of the top 8 have gun 2nd rowers starting and in same cases (dogs) have better bench 2nd rowers than our starting ones.

The bottom line we need to have the calls go our way and be playing out of our skin to match the quality sides and their is still a million miles between our great games and our poor games. As Happy said our centre's and second rowers are way off quality and that is where we leak most of our points. Our defence will never improve till we get some real hard nuts defending with our kids, even Dean Pay or Trevor the axe would not fix the problem.

I am really worried about 2017 even though we went better than expected in 2016

And the other problem is there isn't much talent uncontracted for 2017 in the positions we mentioned SC

Even if there was some quality come onto the market it is highly unlikely we could match the money being offered in the market place, also I get the feeling our club is putting their efforts into resigning the big four before committing to much of the cap elsewhere

Really? I thought the impact was quite noticeable. I actually attribute the change in the interchange rule to much of South Sydney's and Manly's drop in the ladder this season.

We're back baby!

If souths come in at number 8 on the ladder next year, we have to be 7.

I have a long running bet with a mate who follows the wabbits and I finally won the carton of beer after 4 long, thirsty years.

After 10 years of betting it is 5 cartons each.
Go you Tigers!

You'll be right for the next decade

Our number 1 priority this offseason should be sorting out the goal kicking. We need to sign a proven kicker, promote a reserve grader or devote a heck of a lot of time training someone up. This person then needs to be our kicker week in and week out (barring injury). No more chopping and changing between Moses, Rankin etc.
We easily lost 1-2 games this past season due to the goal kicking. We win those games, we make the finals.

Sue would make an excellent edge player , but I would be concerned in the same way I'd be concerned having Cartwright getting targeted by Tedesco , he'd get eaten with pure speed off the mark defensively

What this team really needs is someone (a sports psychologist? a shrink? a navy seal commander? a drill sargeant?) to get inside the players' heads, both individually and collectively, and eliminate once and for all the lazy, que sera sera attitude that has been holding this club back for so long.

The capitulation that occurred in round 26 this season, when they had everything to play for, was unforgivable really and this wasn't the first time a Wests Tigers team has looked so disinterested and performed so badly when everything is on the line. In fact, it's been a common theme around this club since they won the Premiership back in 2005!

The players are always talking a lot about the great atmosphere at the club, how they're all mates and love playing together and for one another etc blah blah, but talk is cheap - that camaraderie and willingness to go the extra mile for each other has rarely been shown on the field where it really counts. In just about every season you can count on one hand the number of times the team has gelled as a unit and gutsed out a win for each other and this season I can only really recall 2 times that they played like that - the 1 point win over the Broncos at Suncorp and the round 22 win over the Cowboys at Leichhardt. Other than those 2 games it was the same inconsistent and often lacklustre garbage that has been served up year in, year out.

Perhaps apart from the addition of a big centre and an impacting second rower, I think we have enough footballing talent in the team to go all the way, but we just do not cut it mentally and, until we do, we will never ever be in the mix. I don't know what is it, but like many of its supporters, this club and the subsequent teams mentally still seem to be living off the 1 Premiership win they achieved 11 years ago! And just about every player we have bought, over the years since, has fallen victim to the lackadaisical culture that has permeated this club.

Until we change the culture and the mental attitudes of the players & staff, no one we buy will make any real difference to our performances on the field, imo. So please WT, can you just get someone to step in and address this important area, otherwise I'm afraid it will just be Groundhog day again next season and the next, and the next….
