Whatever happened to the Wests in the Wests Tiger

tigersmurf they both went broke…newtown saw the signs and moved to c-town....they were the first ones to adopt that area and call it home....it didnt work out for them....lucky for wests it didnt.The nswrl helped several teams out of financial problems and wests were one of them...wests were kicked out but went to court and won which got them reinstated...newtown sadly didnt seem to have any fight in them or the funds to do it.

Therein lies my point,

The whole debate truly is a black hole. Everybody wants to chime in with what they claim are the facts and truths - when at the end of the day every single person is throwing completely subjective opinion, gossip, and third party rumour around the place. The winner seems to be person shouting the loudest - or the guy with the most support.

For the record - I don't know what to believe. I don't know who is at fault, I don't really know whether the Magpies are hard done by, I have got no idea whether Balmain have received preferential treatment.

All I do know is - both clubs are dragging themselves through the mud - alebit in the background. The only people in the whole organisation who seem to grasp the joint venture and what it is supposed to be, is the guys on the field- they would all consider themselves to be 'Wests Tigers'.

As grim as it sounds - the saga will only end when the fossils from both sides of the joint venture are behind the pearly gates - reminiscing about the good ol' days - when the Tigers and the Magpies both had their own rugby league team.

Wrong.

Assistance was only provided to Cronulla in the early 80's. Wests and Newtown were not provided any assistance. Newtown and Wests were to be removed for the introduction of Canberra and Illawarra, however, the NSWRL did want a team in Campbelltown.

Why is it that Magpies supporters are continually asked for proof of everything they write but Tigers supporters can write anything that comes in to their heads without any justification whatsover and no onus to show any proof for their comments - the only factual statement i can see in this lot of garbage is " wests were kicked out but went to court and won which got them reinstated"

Having lived through that era, I can assure you the Magpies got no financial help from the NSWRL. They kicked us out in 1983 and then again at the end of the 1984 season. The only thing that saved us was the rock concert at Lidcombe Oval in 1984, the Neville Wran and Bob Hawke fund raiser nights at Wests Ashfield in 1984 and Rick Wayde who was like the Winston Churchill in the second world war. They would have kicked us out again in 1985 had Campbelltown not come along.

This whole thread is based on The Magpies performance in State Cup. As I don't recognize State Cup as a reputable competition, for me it's not an issue. If the Magpies board want to field a team and get flogged every week … That's up to them. I don't associate myself with that as an ex-magpies fan in any way. While ever the Wests is kept in the Wests Tigers, the colors are black, white and gold and the games are shared equally, I am more than happy. By rights, if the league had their way in the early 80's, we should be the same as Newtown and Norths ... Ie no first grade representation. I reckon the last 12 years as Wests Tigers has been the most enjoyable in my Rugby League supporter career. Smeg reckons next year it will be one reserve grade team ... I hope he is right ... That will be another divisive piece of the jigsaw removed. I love the Wests Tigers ....I hope we never go back to the way we were ... The way we are now is so so great.
 
If (or should I say when) Balmain Football club come out and also state they don't want a Wests Tigers state cup team should they still receive all the 2nd tier cap for players and WT resources ? Or should WT donate it to charity?

Im sick of hearing about all this dribble from both sides of the merger. Im an EX Balmain fan. Im an ex fan because my team doesnt exist anymore, neither does the Western Suburbs Magpies (neither does the NS Bears, or the Hunter Mariners or the Adelaide Rams or Glebe or Sydney Uni). Now i support a new team called Wests Tigers. They entered the comp in 2000\. My old team that is now extinct competed from 1908 till 1999\. It's as simple as that. 12-13 years later people are still moaning about 2 teams that are now extinct in the Elite National Competition. Do we not have anything better to do like support Wests Tigers (the entity that was born from the merger of these 2 great teams) instead of talking about all this garbage of "he got, she got, what did i get" nonsense. Move on with your empty lives and support the team of Wests Tigers or go join another forum, after all, this is the WESTS TIGERS forum. Stop posting all this rubbish of post merger hang ups. i dont want to see it. Im on this forum to read about the team i support, The Mighty Wests Tigers.

A magpies nsw cup team had or has a purpose of preserving a foundation club and providing a senior team for the macarthur area. I do accept that the current two team format is unsustainable and that a single WT nsw cup team for 2013 is the likely outcome.

I must point out a few things… WT is a new club and a joint venture with a unique history. Its creation was to ensure that both 1908 clubs 'live on' at nrl level in a new form. Nsw cup and respective junior leagues was to remain with both clubs.. Moving nsw cup away from nrl schedules has seen the demise of the competition in both significance and as a spectacle.

The two team formula worked well from 2000-2006 and contributed to a WT premiership in some way in 05

Moving to 2012 and the situation is unhealthy for all parties. There are parties and individuals to blame both inside and outside WT and def from the past - most notably fractures within the wests group for the farce it is now

I can accept a single wt nsw cup team based on a few SIMPLE requests

-alternate wt nsw cup strip in both balmain and magpies strips
-share games between equally leichhardt and campbelltown
-ensure the club does its best to align nsw cup games with nrl games where possible (if wt are playing 7.30 on a sat nite, make it 3.30 nsw cup, 5.30 nyc then 7.30 first grade)
-harmonise relationships between all clubs and boards and junior leagues
-most importantly (as a result of ending the magpie brand at senior level) ensure that the original wests brand stays relevant in wests tigers by reminding all league fans that WT is NOT an extension of balmain (both visually and geographically) and that there is alot of black and white history and tradition in WT and not just balmain's history and tradition of playing at leichhardt oval on a sunday arvo or dragging out blocker, benny elias or siro for opinions from tigers legends.
- old tigers fans still wear black and gold merchandise, still find most of the tigers hone games in the inner city/inner west, still have a tiger walking up and down the sideline, still hear TIGERS on tv calls, radio calls, interviews, newspaper articles, match guides, internet and still chant tigers, tigers every game
YES it is the mascot of WT (the team we all follow here) but sadly the wests identity is ignored and forgotten (intentional or not)

I love and embrace WT but want to ensure the club lives on with a bright successful future made of balmain heart pumping with magpie blood.

All of this talk isn't helping the poor old Magpies in the NSW Cup who are getting pumped every single week

No one on either side of the Merger should of or should be letting this happen to the other side of the Merger

Its funny how we are a single entity in one sense as long as the other side of entity isn't the one getting shafted week after week

This will be the one real downer to the JV that I will never forget or forgive .

Honestly all Wests Tigers fans should be ashamed what is happening to the Wests NSW Cup side
