Whatever happened to the Wests in the Wests Tiger

All of this talk isn't helping the poor old Magpies in the NSW Cup who are getting pumped every single week

No one on either side of the Merger should of or should be letting this happen to the other side of the Merger

Its funny how we are a single entity in one sense as long as the other side of entity isn't the one getting shafted week after week

This will be the one real downer to the JV that I will never forget or forgive .

Honestly all Wests Tigers fans should be ashamed what is happening to the Wests NSW Cup side

I can't say I am ashamed …. Embarrassed is a more apt description .... Wests Tigers is the way of the future.

Totally agree that we should be the Wests Tigers should be that way from top to bottom as of 2013

But again that doesn't help the 2012 Wests NSW Cup side does it and the Wests supporters who are bitterly disappointed that this will be the way it all finishes in senior rugby leugue

tigersmurf they both went broke…newtown saw the signs and moved to c-town....they were the first ones to adopt that area and call it home....it didnt work out for them....lucky for wests it didnt. The nswrl helped several teams out of financial problems and wests were one of them...wests were kicked out but went to court and won which got them reinstated...newtown sadly didnt seem to have any fight in them or the funds to do it.

Why is it that Magpies supporters are continually asked for proof of everything they write but Tigers supporters can write anything that comes in to their heads without any justification whatsover and no onus to show any proof for their comments - the only factual statement i can see in this lot of garbage is " wests were kicked out but went to court and won which got them reinstated"

To further complicate the issue, wests magpies are made up of 2 different factions who have never really got on. The ashfield and campbelltown groups. Ashfield was always the dominant partner, controlling the board and kicked in the major share of the cash. I believe ashfield are happy with the one team arrangement, it's a small part of the campbelltown faction who are against it. This isn't a western suburbs / balmain thing it's not even an inner west / outer west thing, it's a part of a faction of a part of the partnership. A little group making a lot of noise.
As an ex player (thru the dark 80s) and lifetime Maggie supporter I dont want to see my team fade into insignifigance and the balmain boys feel the same way but I'm realistic. My team was always going to struggle; to get money and keep home grown players. (How much does cronulla remind me of us in the 80s and 90s).
The merger created one premier team from two real strugglers. I have a team in first grade with the rich history of two centenary clubs, both of which I'm terribly proud, which has the financial clout and professional structure that will keep its place as a premier nrl club for decades. I call them wests my balmain mates call them the tigers but it's all our team.

How many times do other clubs get called their full names in the papers? or even the calls on the TV?

They don't need to be the full name all the time. But WT is referred to as the 'tigers' only around 90% of the time

We and media all call souths just souths most of the time, manly just manly most of the time same goes for parra or parramatta

WT is VERY rarely called just wests! With The cronulla sharks vs WT game from round 1 on fox sports, matt russell (commentator) did not use the name wests or wests tigers once in his call.

Ricky stuart wrote a full page article on benji and WT and did not use the name wests or wests tigers once in his article

The wests name is taken away from membership logo and merchandise

Some media have even accidently called WT balmain during panels and calls

I just want all fans and media to respect the wests in WESTS TIGERS

There is a wests heritage round once a year with a black and white only jersey and wt fans are up in arms about it not having any orange On it… (i remember some posts on the story with 500 comments about it) because the jersey is SO different to normal wt jerseys and merchandise.

Not to mention the shrinking magpie on the sleeve... I mean cuff

Myself and other WT fans just ask for simple respect for the wests in wests tigers.

Successful JV made up of two foundation clubs with two individual histories. Not just a renamed or modernised balmain club.

I've certainly seen that, but I'm sure they shorten the names of all the other clubs as well. Just watching Sunrise right now and it's the Eels and Dogs, not Parramatta not Canterbury. I just think there's a habit to shorten it all.

Yes they could be mentioning Wests a bit more, it just seems that the mascot name is the one that gets used the most in regards to all sides.

It doesn't matter for other clubs as they are not a JV! They have all had the same name and brand since day one. WT is a JV with its own unique brand/identity.

Wests is not a mouthful or a tongue twister. Nit hard to add it to the word tigers in print or verbal form.

Yes its the mascot of WT but it was also the mascot for balmain. The magpie is gone so the name wests is all that is left to preserve the wests in wests tigers.

How often do you hear the St George Illawarra Dragons referred to as just the Dragons? You would never hear them referred to as just Illawarra.

I think it should be Wests Tigers or just Tigers. This is not a disrespect to the Wests side of the merger just the fact that our mascot is a tiger, and thats what most people relate to.

FFS… This again? Some people call them Wests, some the Tigers, some the Wests Tigers, some the Balmain Magpies and some call them the Tigpies.

Do you lecture everyone who addresses them per their personal preference?

How about everyone start supporting the merger. The past is the past, we can all easily remember magpies and balmain for what they were.
We are wests tigers now

Why is everyone living in the past? Balmain and the Magpies aren't coming back.

We are the Wests Tigers now, get used to it or go support someone else.

:sign:

Its not about living the in the past.

Its about recognising that WT is a JV representing both 1908 clubs at NRL level.

If we are no longer living in the past then why is WT still playing at Leichhardt oval which is not up to nrl standard?

If we are wishing to forget history and tradition (i.e lets just call them the tigers because thats our mascot) - remembering the wests brand is not important??

Hundreds of fans still wear philips balmain jerseys and victa jerseys - they still living in the past?

WT shouldn't celebrate heritage round (like the round 5 clash v souths)?

I am not trying to be devisive but just want all fans both WT and non WT to respect the wests in wests tigers before its lost for good. It will be lost in nsw cup from 2013 so it needs to be relevant in WT at all levels

Seriously not a big ask.

Dragons wont be called illawarra because its not their name.

South Sydney can be called souths and manly-warringah can be called just manly but wests tigers cant be called wests now and then?

It would nice to have the media promote WT as it is. A blend of two clubs. Not just 'the tigers' 90% of the time or 'the tigers playing at their spiritual home of leichhardt' etc etc etc
\
\
I am a WT supporter 100% i am not 'dictating' what should be i am just questioning why some things cannot be

Most WT fans over 25yo are aligned to either balmain or the maggies. Thats a generation of fans who support WT for that very reason and why WT is so popular. It doesn't mean we are living in the past or mean we are supporting WT any less than anyone else - its just in our blood.

I reckon the ol' Maggies are doing allright ….... when I look on the scoreboard it always says Wests up there somewhere ....... thats good enough.

On the point about wearing the old jumpers ..... I think thats great .... I love seeing the old jumpers at the games.
The old Masterton, Victa, Phillips, Meriton ........ even saw an old IPEC last season !

Sorry …... don't recognise state cup.

i think the wests supporters should be happy balmain joined together with them to form the wests tigers , they could have gone with parramatta and wests may have been left out altogether , nobody goes around not calling our team , wests tigers to pee people of it is probably that our mascot is a tiger the most marketable in the nrl thats why they call us the tigers , and we are the tigers , the wests tigers

x2 - I care about it as much as Group 21 in the Hunter Valley. Its just park footy to me (and 97% of League supporters) dont follow it, never have, dont care for it. dont think ive ever seen a game or a result nor have the desire for it. I follow the big game. The one that all rugby leagues fans care about and the one that gets media attention. NOT CRAPPY PARK FOOTY that unless your a western suburbs magpie supporter who follows it as they are bitter and twisted that the name WESTS doesnt get enough attention??? wow, so petty. Its not 1950, move on.

by the way it is actually pretty weird to say WTFL1981, i remember when they announced the name in the early days it was banded around about what a stupid name Westssssssss Tigers was…...shouldnt it be The Western Tigers??? sounds so much better!!

Had we been called the 'Western' Tigers then the Wests brand would almost certainly be dead as you couldn't call them anything else but the Tigers. At least with the way it turned out, you can still refer to them as 'Wests'. It was the smart thinng to do
