A local sydney amateur comp would be fun going forward, blue mountains versus bondi beach

Hobbo, Snagsorcerer and I can line up for the Blue Mountains Banjo Slingers.

Wow ..
We have a third member !
Good stuff !

The Penns will drop Manly like a bag of hot sick. Aren't Cronulla having issues getting funding despite their development going ahead?

Titans might go, Warriors might fold.

Dogs, Tigers, Penrith, Easts, Souths, Parra and Newcastle I'd imagine would all be OK. As would Canberra.

While Leagues Clubs and Sugar daddies are about with support $s the game wil continue.
But don’t expect to see current team format and structure to continue.

There'll be no mergers. Clubs will either die or survive. The new admin will take who has survived and then take applications for admission. Whoever has survived in Sydney will be the extent of teams in Sydney.

It actually may get back to being a sport that people played for the love of the and the Mercenaries like Matterson Moses Mitchell any Rorters or Storm players will be forgotten

Hope the new comp can make a draw that doesn't have teams playing each other a second time in short periods. So incredibly stupid.

The first part is I don't believe the NRL would go insolvent - the clubs maybe, because they are footing the bill for wages, and maybe the clubs have to lay off players, same as any cafe or restaurant is currently facing. I don't think it would be guaranteed that players get paid our their wages if there's no football.

The NRL head office only really needs a skeleton staff if there's no football being played. I don't expect the NRL has many overheads if there's no matches, so the entity can just sit still and wait, whilst perhaps the top staff take pay cuts to see out the drop.

NRL is a business but it's also a peak sporting organisation, so as a corollary, I don't think Touch Football Australia or Netball Australia cease to exist because the elite competition is postponed (I am aware that the TFA reports to the NRL now).

And if worst comes to worst and the NRL was to dissolve permanently, somehow, and all clubs fold... all the players are laid off for a year, then in a year or two a new rugby league competition emerges, with a new name, maybe new club names etc.

Back to the chook raffles. Players were not paid much then but they play for the love of the game, not $$$ money.

Quite true Newtown, however the Super League fiasco ruined the old way and introduced huge over the top salaries that these days players want to get as much as they can..if the current and future NRL players honestly love the game then they will all band together with admin, sponsors and media and try to keep an affordable game going so clubs can exist while presenting a quality of rugby league that we are used to...how do they do it?probably go back to the olden days and see how money was made and raised to keep going, however things will be quite different once we get out of this pandemic...we will have to wait and see how much damage is done in the meantime...
I will give you an example of the love of playing rugby league...when I played for Turvey Park in the 80s,my first contracted payment in the first year was $10 a win in reserve grade $50 a win in first, nothing for a draw or loss..
second year the same..3rd,4th,5th and 6th year we were asked to play for no money because the club was 46k in debt,we only paid the capt coach of first and reserve grade..
All the guys that went through the juniors with Turvey and went to senior grades all stuck together including players such as me that joined the club much later on..
we raised money by going down town with a wheelbarrow full of goods donated to the club and sold raffle tickets to raise money,we organised family steak and beer days at our home ground providing entertainment donated by the community such as jumping castles and pony rides etc for the children...we kept these sort of things up for 4 years and eventually got the club out of debt...
this wont happen at NRL level but they have fair more resources to tap than what we had..these are just my thoughts and in no way do I even have an idea how they will survive..

Duelling Banjos Instead of Eye of the Tiger hey?

Apparently V'Landys is open to private investors for the NRL ..An American investor shows a heck of a lot of interest...

I think there are a lot of unanswered questions and possibilities. I read an interesting article from a New Zealand Rugby site, 'Rugbypass'. It quoted a prominent sports writer in NZ, by the name of Dylan Cleaver, who questioned whether this is now the time for both codes of rugby to explore the possibility of merging. He said that Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby, as well as Rugby in England faced massive losses - no surprise there. He suggested union and league may need each other to survive the aftermath of coronavirus. To quote him, “For financial reasons alone, having all the talent playing a single code makes perfect sense.” I'm a league man, but played both codes growing up and enjoyed both. I think all the people who take polar, almost hate positions, from either code, may be forced to rethink the possibility of a merger. I think it could possibly be done and might be needed, but with a lot of stumbling blocks along the way. People's ideas here?

There is nothing in union that would make the game interesting in Australia. It is on its last legs here for a very good reason

Take 2 players off the union team, have 6 tackles, 4 points for a try, 2 points for a goal ,1 for a feid goal and don't invite Parra.
Then I'm in.
