Why isn't the clock stopped in League?

Hi,

I've always wondered why the clock isn't stopped in league when the ball is out of play?
In other sports i.e. Basketball, Ice Hockey, etc the clock is stopped when there is no play and in Football (Soccer) there is added injury time.

League technically isn't played for 80 minutes. Maybe 70-75minutes?

Cheers,

J

See what your saying . So every time the is a stoppage in play we would stop the clock . Don't mind the idea but some games would go on forever . Example The Tigers v Penrith game would still be going as we speak with all the stoppages .

Yeah CB i know but when a ball is kicked dead in goal or kicked into touch or drop out…

Play usually doesn't take anymore than 10-20 seconds to reset.

How long do teams get to restart on drop outs? I dunno to my knowledge when a half kicks it out of play 2 teams have to lumber back and reset and then scrum problems, i think usually it's much longer than 10-20 seconds. But anyway…

The funny thing is that an American Football game goes for 60 minutes of game time, takes almost four hours to play and yet they spend at least 40 of those 60 minutes standing around between plays and then waiting for the play clock to tick down to 1 or 2 seconds before executing a play. I know the clock stops for an incomplete pass, when a player runs out of bounds, etc. but if a team just keeps on running the ball it's possible to wipe a bunch of time off the clock and only have maybe 10% of it dedicated to running a play.

Eg. Team starts their possession. They execute a running play, which takes maybe three or four seconds. The clock keeps running, and the play clock (40 seconds) ticks away. They execute their next play with the play clock at 1 second. It's another running play which takes maybe five or six seconds this time if the team gains some good yardage. Play ends, and the process starts again. If the game keeps on going like this without any penalties or other stoppages the team could hold onto possession for something like seven or eight minutes and the actual portion of that where the ball is in play might only be 60 seconds. It's one aspect of the NFL that I really hate, and makes it all the more stupid at the end of the game when they spike the ball to stop the clock or call timeouts.

I dont understand either, I mean they do it in AFL when a goal is kicked or when the ball goes out of bounds, why cant we do it? I say someone should bring it up on the Sunday Roast, I remember Gus Gould being in favour of it and mentioning it a couple of years ago.

I think they said it would be because teams could play slower and kick the ball out and walk to the scrum every set. It would also be an issue with tv times.

Agree with stopping time for when the ball is dead. Its a the worst wen a side is trailing in a close game and the other side walk to the kick off and waste a minute or two.

Also font teams have 90 seconds to kick the ball from a dropout? That's pathetic.

Its actually 40 seconds Kaiser now since last season . I can think of at least one team that has been penalized for it It was a Friday night game last season can't remember the team . 90 seconds is for shots at goal I think

I got a reply, which was nice.

"Hi Jonathan,

I think it is a fair question to ask. At the very least, I would like to see it tried in the last ten minutes of a game."
