Willie Mason [Discussion]

 I said before in another thread,Willie at 34 not really suitable,we have good forward prospects that will have benefitted from this year. This is only my opinion, but we need to replace Rowdy with a specialist centre who wants to take it forward.Iam not knocking Rowdy but his best is past him and I don't think he ever got over the horrendous injury he suffered although he tried. If we have a good offseason and the injured players all recoup and become fit again then I think we can plan ahead with our top squad and hopefully they stay healthy and give us hope of a great finish in 2015.Willie would offer something short term but I would rather see the young forwards take us forward, they do have Woods Farrah and Thompson to learn from.(I left out mentioning Mick Potter as a learning curve because we don't know yet if he is going to be with us,I really hope he is.) 😛ray:

Very interesting to see the outcome. If Willy does end up signing with us, will the club starting signing all the other troubled players. It's funny because the last time Willy was in negotiations with us, the WT did say on behalf of the club and sponsors that they will not lower the clubs image by signing serial pests. How times have changed, are we really a club that can provide proper welfare and support to those in need. Could the lunatics really be running ….................

Willie Mason set to add his experience to the Manly Sea Eagles’ pack next season

Paul Crawley
The Daily Telegraph
October 11, 2014 12:00AWillie Mason says he is being chased by “a lot” of clubs.

Willie Mason looks set to add some experience to Manly next season, with Anthony Watmough’s exit.

MANLY are ready to throw Willie Mason an NRL lifeline after meeting with the veteran prop on Friday to try and finalise his move to the northern beaches next season.

An official announcement on Anthony Watmough’s release to Parramatta for 2015 won’t be finalised until Watmough returns from a holiday in Thailand next week.

But as Mason looks to link with his fifth NRL club, the 34-year-old told The Daily Telegraph he would be ready to make his decision public next week.

There were suggestions on Friday that the Storm could come in with a late bid to snatch Mason’s services after Bryan Norrie was forced to announce his retirement due to medical advice on a neck injury.

Melbourne understood Mason to Manly was already a done deal and as of Friday night the Storm were adamant that they were hunting in a different direction.

Geoff Toovey is yet to officially rubber stamp Watmough’s move to the Eels — and one of the coach’s major concerns relates to the amount of experience Manly’s pack will be without following Jason King’s retirement and Glenn Stewart’s move to South Sydney.

Between those three, Manly’s pack will be down 710 NRL games of experience next season — while Mason not only brings another big body but has no ongoing injury complaints despite playing 272 NRL games.

Unwanted by new Newcastle coach Rick Stone, Wayne Bennett is in no doubt the giant prop has at least another good year of football in him and his body is more than up to the challenge given Mason carries no shoulder or knee problems and is in top physical shape.

After debuting for the Bulldogs in 2000, Mason had stints at the Roosters, North Queensland and a short spell in the English Super League with Hull KR before joining the Knights in 2012.

Manly is also looking at young Dragons prop Jack Stockwell who St George Illawarra want to offload, but Stockwell’s name has also been mentioned at Newcastle.

Anthony Watmough’s switch to Parramatta is yet to be finalised.

CHOC AND SNAKE TOO MAD FOR MONDAY

Meanwhile, Watmough’s uncertain future bubbles along with Manly yet to come to an agreement on his settlement terms — and there is some suggestion Toovey could still block the move given he has final say on whether Watmough stays or goes.

While Manly seemed resigned to the fact Watmough will leave, they are confident Steve Matai will stay.

Several clubs including Canberra are interested in Brett Stewart for next year but the 29-year-old star fullback is contracted until the end of 2016.

The Sea Eagles also have Junior Kangaroos fullback Clint Gutherson in their top squad, while teenage sensation Tom Trbojevic will be fast-tracked into first grade at some stage next season probably starting out on the wing.

Trbojevic only turned 18 last week but Matty Johns has already labelled the Mona Vale junior “a future Kangaroo” after watching his Holden Cup performances for this year.

wouldn't be surprised if he makes Origin 15 now. Looks like he'll be playing semi final football again- Moreover. it sounds as though Mason chose Manly because his first quote in the story is "a lot of clubs were after me….'
He will be happy.

Willy Mason's deal with Catalans has fallen through & is talk he will play bush football. Do the tiges offer him a minimum contract? Might fire some of the young forwards up even if only playing 35 mins a game.

Yes. Take him. We need an experience prop. I know he can be a bit of a d!ck, but he can also bring some much needed LOLs to the group. He might be just what we need and if isn't working then Just say goodbye .

It's not going to happen Harvey… Little Willy has a strong dislike for the WT. :astonished:

Not quite sure Marzie, but I'm guessing it goes back to 2012 when Willie and his agent, Sam Ayoub was negotiating with WT. He was a certainty to sign with us, until the club panicked after meeting with sponsers and didn't sign him up. The whole situation wasn't handled very professionally by our club. Surprise, 😱pen_mouth: surprise. Soon after, Wayne Bennett swooped and asked him to join the Knights.
It's lack of professionalism, that's got Willie offside with us. And who could blame him.
Once bitten twice shy.

Willie would be a reasonable 1 year signing if we could get him cheaply enough. Doubt he'll be too concerned about past slights (real or imagined) at this stage of his career. Don't seem to be a lot of clubs clamouring to get him on board

Besides WT fans which we all have blind faith all other fans have us at wooden spoon favourites given our weak player roster, poor coach, No Galloway or Taupau and the endless Farah saga.

Brooks has not at this stage lived up to the hype surrounding him whether that is our poor forwards, poor game plan or Farah not given him control.

Still weak in the forwards.

My personal opinion we will finish bottom 4 battling out with Newcastle and Titans for the wooden spoon.

2016 could be a make or break year for Brooks, Moses and Siro

Year of the Broncos is my early pick for premiers.
