Willie mason ???

I can't help thinking that this whole wanting to sign Mason saga is a desperate move by a club in a bit of bother. Everyone has been going on about how much depth we now have because of our recruitment over the off season, but somehow we just never seem to manage the right balance.

We get Blair and Bell to beef us up and get rid of Gibbs and Fafita because of the cap or whatever - but now we need someone else because we've been exposed up front, yet again, and have looked real bad in losing a couple of games. I know there's been injuries to Galloway and Ellis, but there are always injuries to Galloway and Ellis - we really needed to prepare better for this.

It's like we're always putting band aids on broken bones. We've had a whole off season to get this right! When is recruitment gonna get some foresight into exactly who and what is needed to balance this team? So, now we have the scenario, 4 rounds into the comp and we're chasing a bloke well past his prime and who hasn't played an NRL match in how long? A bloke that we would never have even entertained the idea of signing in the past! Seems to me like the desperate action of a desperate club, made so because of a lack of vision.

You're not going to know unless you find out Flip. I don't have a lot of time for the guy, but by golly we are thin up front at the moment, and I reckon Willie is looking for anyone to throw him a lifeline. He'd be walking into a side with multiple internationals and a good chance of winning the premiership (anyone who wants to use the last three rounds as ammunition: You don't win premierships in March,) and he'd be looking to make a fist of it as he enters the twilight of his career.

I originally thought it was bad news for the club to sign him, but we're a prop or two short at the moment, we're allowing our young blokes to go out there and made to look silly and we've had far less admirable characters play in our ranks before. Willie looks like he is keeping his training regimen up while he's out of the loop so it's not like he'll limp into the side if we do give him a look in. It could be seen as a desperate action by a desperate club, however what happens if it comes off, it's all of a sudden the signing of the season and everyone is praising our foresight.

There was Gibbs, Fafita, Payten AND Dwyer….replaced with Bell, Blair and a pommy midget. Groat & Woods contracts upgraded.

Simple maths shows you replace 4 with 2, then lose another 1 or 2 (Kilo + Gaz) along the way...and you will find yourself with a deficit

it's stupid it has even got to this point.
can't believe sheens and alot of fans didn't see this coming.

i posted this last july in response to an article on why we had to release players after signing blair.
–--------------------------------------
so we extended a contract for sheens,so we could rebuild again?

where are the props?
same old same old to me.

he says we need to get bigger and stronger, yet we are turning to kids to do this.
kids that he always sprouts need 50 first grade games to become first graders.

looks to me we are still using backrowers to make the yards.
which has failed year after year.

until i see some seasoned props on the roster i can't see any reason to be optimistic for next year.

Ink might be easier to understand for some if you put it into an equation?

(G+F+P+D)<(B+B+P)

The reason with the delay in signing Big Willie may be we have salary cap issues & need to get the all clear from schubert first or with him being 32, he wants a 2 year deal as it will be his last contract in the nrl.Obviously he won't be on much money this year but the sticking point may be how much he wants for the second year.Would love to see him running out for us on Monday night.

unless the team has changed since yesterday sean meaney is on the bench., given the choice between meaney and mason i know who id prefer !!!

If the tigers sign him, lets hope they ban him from using twitter. We dont want him losing his phone again and it start magically abusing people. Alan hansen liverpool legend said something recently to the effect of 'Colourful characters are good for the game(about balotelli) but you dont win comps with them, they are for midrange teams'

I'd forgotten about Dwyer and Payten! Thanks for reminding me, Ink, but this makes the club's lack of preparation and foresight even worse! I'm not even that much against us signing big Willie - as CB said we won't know until we give him a go. I'm just astounded that we've let it get to the point where we have to. It's the same problem with the forwards **_every_** year, surely there's someone in the club who can get it right.

 Very clever max power! I'd give you some rep points for that if I could :unamused:

I have a sneaking suspicion he may just end up in Melbourne. And no, no inside info, its just a hunch. He's just the kind of player Bellamy would go for

NRL on Fox seem to think the deals off!! If it is because of the negativity from the public than that's a joke!!!

In my opinion his worth a go. Pay him an incentive based contract and if he screws up theirs no chances!!

We need front rowers. He is an ex rep player who still can offer something in my opinion, it makes sense to have him. To many people out their walking around thinking their never done a thing wrong and are perfect.

It's a footy team not a church group, people get over it seriously!!!
