The best 17 has been done to death. This is much more entertaining/depressing, depending on how you want to look at it. Pick it on whatever criteria you like. For me it’s a mix of players who were first grade bottom feeders, and players who didn’t live up to expectations.

I thought he was a worthy option. I think when trying to decide on these teams, the first instinct is to go with mostly players from 2000-2002, but from 2015 onwards we’ve had some absolute lemons. Even in our current squad there are a couple that could easily fit into this side.

Hoppa the finger has to get a mention.
I met Nathan Milone’s father at a function and even he thought Nath was average, couldn’t believe he got picked for firsts especially on his current form in ressies.

I have taken into account relative cost here. Brenden Santi was worse than Adam Blair, for instance, but in terms of value for money there's no contest...
 
I'll say- at first I thought this topic was just a chance to bag out players. But as I thought about it...

Josh Reynolds, Adam Blair, Braith Anasta & Hoppa have been mentioned. Tui as well. Are they REALLY some of our worst ever players? Least popular- sure. But they all held their 1st grade spot for multiple games/years. Hoppa I flat out disagree- I thought he played pretty well, despite his wandering fingers. Tui- should never have been our best attacking weapon. He's not THAT guy. Braith was a 5/8 signed by Sheens to guide our young players & was moved into the 2nd Row and never got to play under Sheens- strange situation for all. Blair was a poor investment. It's started to be noticed that very few players excel outside from Melbourne. There is a specific style these guys play- it doesn't always translate.
But- were these guys as bad as some of those faceless players that should NEVER have seen a 1st grade squad?

I get more disappointed when you hear/read/get told or just believe for yourself, the hype train for the juniors coming through the system.

I nearly added Blake Lazarus to my squad, but he only ever played 2 games. BUT- to hear some talk about him- he was our saviour. Jacob Miller. Shannon Gallant. These are guys that were just completely ineffective. That forward pack I named could knock a sweat bead off someone in a tackle. They had no right getting on the field. And yet- we played them.

I nearly added Brandon Wakeham, but in his defence, he had 2-3 games where he actually performed. Will Smith came to mind, but he was a T&T player- what did we really expect? The list of juniors from our ranks that proved to be faceless bodies in 1st grade is concerning, given the enthusiasm they were talked about with.

There are two ways of looking at it, aren't there? One is literal: the worst players ever to pull on a Tigers jersey. That's fair enough but I don't think it's particularly informative nor is it really fair: it's not Jason Schirnack's fault he happened to be the best available option to fill the bench three times in 2010-11, say.

I'm more interested in players who had some expectations about them and completely failed to live up to them. Some of those are juniors, as you say - my team has Matt Groat in it, for instance. But it's the external signings, particularly the ones that came in on big wages and with major expectations, that to me are the true 'worst' players in Tigers history.

Matt Ballin cost us one of the two bona fide legends of the club and only got on the field three times. Anasta couldn't be bothered from day one and still can't resist putting the boot into the Tigers 10 years later. Adam Blair was the missing piece that was going to make us a premership contender - and we haven't played finals since he arrived. Chris McQueen and Josh Reynolds took up chunks of cap room and produced nothing but physio bills. Oliver Gildart might be the most overmatched player ever to get a decent first grade contract and still had a dig at the Tigers after he left. These are the players that make me embarrassed and angry to think about, not some kid who was overrated in the youth system.

You say it wasn’t Shirnack’s fault he was the best available. But was it McQueen’s fault he broke his neck the week after we signed him? You can make a case that injuries discount a lot of players. Blair and Anasta are absolute starters. BJ Leillua is in the mix too.

Pretty hard to argue with logic.
Mind you, results tell one thing; individual players' talents are another story.

Any analysis must look at the quality of the cattle, and especially in the halves, ie the rudder of any team.
