RUGBY league has claimed one back in its unofficial battle with the AFL in western Sydney with the Wests Tigers head-hunting Grant Mayer from GWS.

The former Manly chief executive will this morning be unveiled as the Tigers' new general manager of commercial operations - a role he served for the fledgling AFL club for three years.

Interestingly, he last night identified the Wanderers as much as a threat to rugby league as AFL - but said the new $1 billion television broadcast deal gave the game a strong footing.

"They are the sleeping giant," Mayer said of the Wanderers, who had their first A-League win with victory over premiers Brisbane Roar on Saturday night.

"They have gone about their business very quietly. Participation numbers in western Sydney are very big, and the Wanderers' crowds have been terrific.

"But there's no doubt that league's resources and finances are significant. The TV deal has been terrific. There are two million people in western Sydney.

"What we're doing is giving them choice, but the strength for rugby league is that it has been here for a long, long time now. You can always do more. The opportunity to grow the game in the west is there."

Mayer's appointment is also significant. It comes a week after the Parramatta Eels unveiled former ANZ Stadium boss Ken Edwards as their football chief executive.

"Our club already enjoys a high profile in the game of rugby league but with Grant's guidance, I'm sure we will become one of the leading sports organisations in Australia," Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys said.

"I have no doubt we will benefit greatly from having someone with Grant's knowledge and expertise."

Mayer comes on board amid a belief the Tigers are struggling financially - something Humphreys rubbished when Mick Potter was named coach last week.

Now off the field, this sounds like a pretty astute signing. Nice work Wests Tigers.

Very clever. Sounds to me like a bit of smart organising is starting to take place.

I'm starting to forget last season and look forward again….....

What exactly does this role entail?

any witches hats involved?

Here's one definition:
"Commercial operations means any activity which involves the buying or selling of goods or services, or the exchange or attempt or offer to exchange goods or services for money, barter, or for anything of value."

I understand that having a strong off field will eventually impact on the on field performances , but unless this bloke is 108kg second rower who can make 35 tackles and 150+ metres every week or a halfback who has 15+ line breaks and 20 try assists with a 90% + tackle completion rate I'm not really concerned

Given Barra's description he may be of some value though , maybe he can trade off Moltzen for starters 😛ray:

Yet more incompetence by Humpty!!! dump him now!
What has this club become <shame>\

*sorry, couldn't help myself</shame>

I'm have a feeling it's more to do with promoting WT and choosing where the money is spent on advertising etc judging by the tone of the article.

Credit where iits due. Humpty said they were conducting a review of the club from the top down, it is seems like changes are afoot.

Thats all you can ask for IMO. They look at change thats required and make things happen. Well done SH & WT

If he can promote the club in a good light it will in the long run mean that more quality players and officials will be attracted to West Tigers.

It's a smart acquisition. He was well respected at Manly and i know a few thought he was a loss when he went to the afl. Credit to Humpty though, it's another step forward and obviously part of the "restructure".
