So after having put the list together, I've actually only just read through it now and digested it. A few things spring to mind:
- I wonder if other sides have so few players in their top 30 locked down past next year. Just over one third of our playing group has a contract past 2020. Is it so common for sides to have such large parts of their roster unsigned past one season, and only two past two seasons? It might be a false economy since we have five spots yet to fill and they may well be longer term signings. I'll need to compare this again next year once all signings have been made.
- A lot of bodies off contract in 2020. Out of that bunch, there's only a few must-haves on that list for mine: Twal, Garner, Momirovski and Talau. I can handle Eisenhuth and Clark for depth at the right price.
- Not a whole lot of depth in the backline or forwards past this year. Really lean on centres, second rowers and props. We have reasonable depth past 2020 in the spine, or at least players that can fill the spine out ably (as opposed to having 5/8's play hooker or second rowers play 5/8.)
- I suspect Madge may even bring a kid (Simpkin possibly?) on in the 30th spot to debut after 30th June to maximise our available cap.
- Based on the above, I would think that we'd need to fill out around 10-11 spots for 2021.
