would have thought the millions going out to see the fireworks and all the tourism generated would already justify it. :unamused:

wouldnt come close!

I dislike Nationalism/Patriotism/Be Proud of Where you come from.

Never understood it. I hear quite a bit that "The country is going to the dogs", Well the why FY^%$ don't you leave and find somewhere else that meets your needs.

"That would be un(Insert Nationality Here)".

It's not like your family is originally from the country you're living in anyway :unamused:

I call Aboriginals "abo's" and refuse to accept it's a derogatory term. It's an abbreviation of aboriginal much like aussie is an abbreviation of Australian. So how on earth is it derogatory?

I also think racism against Caucasians is understated and ignored. I find many who complain about racism are indeed very racist themselves.

I agree .
I think he was a very good player, definitely an origin player, but I always saw him as a average player at that level. Which is still pretty amazing.

I am happy to celebrate Australia Day, but on any date other than twenty six January.

Agreed.. Its time for our Country to do whats right and move Australia Day to its rightful day.

1st January, in Celebration of the Federation of Australia of 1901!

I've always thought it was a rather insensitive to have Australia Day on January 26th, and I don't consider myself to be a flag burning, basket weaving, left wing extremist.

I would support moving it to 1st January to coincide with the Federation.

**What?? and lose a public holiday?** Thats Un-Australian

No just make another one on 2nd Jan for the day after New Years Day/Australia Day  We're good at extending our long weekends here anyway.

Jesus Mate …I got called a racist facist cracker! for using abo in a thread not so long back...I too thought it was an abbreviation much like calling an Englishman a Pom an American a Yank or a Japanese a Jap....

Also I don't get why if a white man calls a African American a [Racist or culturally insensitive words are automatically censored] it's full on racist yet Black American's call each other [Racist or culturally insensitive words are automatically censored]'s all the time and it's fine.... :crazy

Stop being so insensitive

The term has been a derogatory term used for many years

Show some respect please

What is the difference calling someone pink , Blue, White as apposed to calling someone a Fat C@nt , 4 eyed head , Fat arse ? I believe this does massive Physiological effect to one's self esteem ?
Maybe explains why Suicide's are at an all time high .

Actually I thought you were both sensible people I will need to re assess that

The difference between calling a Englishmen a Pom , and an American an Yank is socially they have always been classed as an equal

Unfortunately some of our forefathers thought that Italians ,Asians and Aboriginals weren't equals and feel that this term is racist and derogatory and was used by our forefathers as deriding term

Now do you understand ??

I'm not being PC , I'm being respectful to a race that some our forefathers would of eradicated of the face of this planet if they could of

The person calling someone else the names you refer to is the real person with low esteem.

This is unpopular opinions thread right?

Just thought I'd make it clear exactly how unpopular it was

So we are held to judge by our forefathers…..I feel that it is the intent in how the term is used

for example the number of times Happy.... you yourself have described us as 'Mexicans' is in jest and I don't feel it as racist others may have a different view...

If somebody uses a racial term such as “Asians” or “Mexicans” with vitriol… it is clearly offensive. But if someone uses the same word in a neutral context, how can it be so racist?

Very good article here

Yep wicked waste alright. Seen one fireworks display, seen them all. Honestly, when are we going to tire of it? Australia Day Fireworks, Christmas Eve Fireworks, New Years Eve Fireworks, Queens Birthday Fireworks, fireworks just for the sake of having fireworks day and on and on it goes, ad nauseum.

Millions of dollars literally going up in smoke all around the country every single year, so we can all stare into the sky for 10 minutes at a time and go "ooh ahh". Money that could've been put to good use addressing the increasing rate of homelessness and unemployment, the shortage of staff and decent facilities in our hospitals or perhaps to provide funds to the shelters, assisting women and children trying to escape domestic violence, that run on a shoe-string budget having to beg the government for every dollar - just to name a few.

But nah, let's just keep those fireworks coming, bigger and better every year, so we can be the best and the world can see how wonderful Australia is because we can put on a New Year's Eve Fireworks display better than everyone else :unamused:

As far as I'm concerned, the fireworks can p… off, along with the Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi chant!

Well said Flip, couldnt agree more …sensless spending on one hand desperate situations that need addressing on the other...I wonder if the Govt has ever heard of the word PRIORITIES...

Yeah no doubt and agreed but doesn't help the person receiving those sort of tirades as well.
