For mine, he needs to be more on the ball. He doesn't appear to have the commanding voice needed to rally a defensive line at fullback either. His run/pass game is probably the best at the club and having him in the halves makes us a lot more dangerous than having him at fullback. He doesn't get good enough ball from our halves, so he should be one.

Wouldn't mind seeing him in 6... Just curious..

Does he have a kicking game?

His short kicking is pretty good from what I’ve seen. But he doesn’t need to go to 6 to do that.

I remember when first signed, someone asked gus gould what he sees his best position. Long term at 6 he said.

Ive been questioning his speed at fullback. Like he is quick but he isnt super quick, some half chances are being missed due to it.

Would seem more suited at 6 long term.

Yep and for anyone who says Dillon isn't going to make the grade you haven't seen the dude play. He is dominant at Flegg level and his speed is enough on it's own for any first grade coach worth his salt to blood him. The kid is going to play first grade and soon.

I'm not saying he isn't going to play 1st grade, I am saying it is not guaranteed that he will.

I too think that he'll potentially be more suited to 6 - in the long-term.

Want him at fullback till we have someone better there though. We need to get him more involved.

Wait and see. The dude is clearly a 6. Plays like a 6, looks like a 6. He's not a modern fullback. He is built nothing like an elite fullback. He looks and plays like Jerome Luai or Kodi Nikorima. I am not even really saying to play him at 6, I am just saying 6 is clearly his best position, it's written literally all over the kid. His ceiling is pretty good fullback, but if he gets to play at 6 his ceiling is muuuuch higher. He has physical limitations that will prevent him from becoming a dominant fullback imo.

I think the club sees him as a 6 as well with the players the Tigers have had discussions with

Is this a thread rating his looks? 6/10?

He's a solid 7 everyday of the week. The facial hair stops him from being a 8.

I do agree...dillon, scolari, ogden all will push fot a spot next year... however laurie is our definitive option at 1 for the next while..
We could pull a warriors tactic and shove laurie into 6 just to debut him at fb to blood him

**Dane Laurie has been a revelation in 2021**

A real diamond who will show his great skills and reliability even more in coming years as the squad improves.

Upgrade his contract and lock him away today

He’s been solid, but the forum overrates him imo.

I agree with this, he's been solid and safe but hasn't quite lived up to the hype the WTF has thrust upon him.

It may well be in his future but we're yet to see it. He may also be a 6 but that remains to be seen too.

I agree with this. I also could cut and paste it in an Adam Douiehi thread unfortunately

Could Dane Laurie be a Steve Renouf winger ?

Renouf was a Kangaroo and Broncos centre.

Fullback is a second 5/8.

Hynes >

1 Laurie

6 Hynes

If we are lucky enough to get Hynes I'd play him at fullback and put Laurie into the 6.
Reminds me of Jerome Luai, although I don't think Brooks could play a similar role to Cleary.
Hastings would suit him.
Saying that, I'd keep him at the back until we get somebody at least as good to replace him.

I can't recall the bloke dropping 1 catch yet and we all want to move him.

His ball security is superb and we all seem to be looking at his attack (which is damn good also). Especially his ball paying.

So what if he loses a few meters when he hits the line. In a few years he'll be either strong enough to bust a few or have the legs to avoid it altogether.

Leave Laurie where he is. We have way too much chopping and changing already.

It's not really where I am coming from. Darren Lockyer was a great fullback, but he was an Immortal when moved to 6. Laurie has the traits of a Cliffy Lyons type five-eighth. This isn't about him being a bad fullback. This is about playing our highest potential attacking player in the most impactful position.
