Mental Health Discussion

To be honest, I don’t think much about it, but now that you’ve mentioned it, I find it odd that I’ve known quite a few people with bipolar but not a single person has told me they’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia?
There was this woman I knew who had 3 totally different names and she insisted she had no knowledge of the other two each time I asked. I found her interesting and enjoyed our conversations. A few years had passed with no sign of her. Then finally I get a call, says she has been living in Russia for a few years now and could I send her some things she was finding hard to get. Had a few phone conversations with her during the following few years, then lost contact again. I suspect she may have had something associated with schizophrenia but I never asked.

a friend of mine has schizophrenia and he tells me all about it and the one good thing about it is he is open and talks to me freely about his condition, I can see him have this release once he starts talking about it. he told me that once he stops keeping busy it comes back (hears voices and sees people that are not there) so he does everything in his power to keep busy, may that be taking dance classes or art or just doing things around the house, he told me it is hard as he has had a lot of medication already, changing it all the time but again what he told me was he needs to keep busy and that works well for him

Generally, this is true.

Depot needles or weekly/ fortnightly / monthly injections are usually the "go to".

Every individual is different though....

I also believe a lot of the times, BOTH the injections AND the tablet medications are used... but again, all comes down to an individuals needs and what is chartered by not only a GP but a psychiatrist or a team of mental health professionals.
You can get 3-monthly’s injections too, and 6-monthly’s are on their way

I feel for you and your wife. Is your wife's medication effective and does it improve her quality of life? Obviously you play a big role in supporting her. Kudos to the both of you.
A few have mentioned medications, including @upthetigers and whilst they often help living with the condition, they can also be brutal and have strong side effects. In my wife's case the second one prescribed, unlike the first, properly addressed her condition and troubled by halting her menstruation.

As she has always had an erratic cycle (a fortnight or up to a few months apart) it took a while to understand that it had stopped and we put it down to simply being early menopause. Upon once more changing medications her cycle began again after a month or so and though still not timely, oddly more consistent than previously.

Mate, I'm not your mate. You decided to post a medical issue into a football forum. Please respect us all and seek advice from specialists for your condition. It saddens me to think the Mods allowed such a personal and unrelated to football post to be permitted.. I hope you are managing your condition, but I for one don't need to hear about other people's mental issues. What next, Kidney Stones and ingrown toenails? Seriously, if you need attention join facebook.
What a poor post. The guy just wanted to see how he fits in society as he comes to terms with his condition. He wasn’t asking for advice on treatment. If you don’t want anything to do with it don’t open it and definitely don’t post.

I feel for my friend's wife - I just tell her to keep him busy around the house even if he breaks things or makes it worse - they just need to have a good laugh about it and for her to go where he wants to go, the problem is she can barely walk and is embarrassed to be seen as not being capable of doing simple things, they're in Tassie now so I haven't heard a thing from him for a while, I hope you're coping well too as I've seen both of them suffer even if he's the only who has it, it is tough on her too

You must of not saw the covid thread? 😂

I'd expect to read such an insensitive post from one other certain, so unaware, individual....

Oh wait , they were in this thread, with their ever so superior intelligence comparing schizophrenia to anxiety.

Any how .... Your post is very important.... as it shows that SOME of society still need education around mental health / illness. Although it has had some light on it over recent years, there is a taboo around it and it is looked at in a negative light by some.
You are an insensitive moron.
Once you get a gist of what the topic is about you can choose to ignore it.
Have you stopped to think for a minute that other members of the forum may actually have issues and gained strength from what's been said.
If anything, you should be the one banned by the mods!
It's a WestsTigers Football Forum, not Dr Phil or Oprah. Though sometimes when folks get all antsi about Brooks you'd never know the difference!

The Light-hearted stuff like Dad Jokes & Latest song helps pass time through the offseason in a positive manner
.
I'm not insensitive, nor a moron & I'm perfectly OK. I also thought the COVID thread was the greatest piece of misinformation gathered in one place. It just became a slugfest between Anti Mandaters and Pro Vaxxers. Just a Left vs Right spiral.

If you accept these types of threads this forum will deteriorate in no time. None of us are Mental Health professionals as far as I can tell. So keep your thoughts to yourselves else you risk giving false hope & advice to someone who needs professional help. That was my point. I won't be responding to any further feedback and will be concentrating on the upcoming Trial vs Manly.

Good post.

Not every thread is for everyone..

I steer clear of that star wars thread 😂
That's the best approach...

It deteriorated when you got on it, bye.

What medications have you tried? I believe patients are usually prescribed pills first, but they often have more success with the injectables, as they reduce the risk of non-compliance i.e. forgetting or deliberately not taking the meds.
Heaps mate. Due to non compliance (I didn't believe I had schizophrenia at first) I was put on an injectable but unfortunately it has stopped working so I am tapering off it.

Mate I relate to this post so much. I work from home and I am always trying to keep busy. You must be a good friend for him to confide in you like that. I've only opened up to 2 friends about it.

I am not trying to get a diagnosis on the forum I already speak to mental health professionals and take medication. It's just that it's difficult talking about the topic in real life every one has their problems and doesn't want to hear other people's problems. I just thought it was more appropriate to talk about it on the forum and I can't believe the reaction it has got what a great community.

I'm a big supporter of mental health.
I'm always available for a chat if anyone needs.
I dont have time for ppl who pretend or play the mental health card for sympathy. There's a few on here that have done that in the past and its poor form. Pricks like that need to be sorted out.
I have a few programs running within the businesses and I encourage anyone suffering, especially in today's climate, to speak up. The sooner the male stigma of cowardice in coming forward is removed, the better we will be as a society.
Chin up gang, we'll win a title soon.

The Sunnyboys were one of my favourite bands when growing. Most know about the battle Jeremy Oxley, the lead singer and lead guitarist, had with schizophrenia. I believe he has been the subject of at least one television programme about his life. This is my favourite song from that era.

I treat him like a grandpa/dad, his daughter is the same age as me but never really hang around with her... I don't even know if she knows, I drop by sometimes just to check on him and his wife but again since they moved I haven't heard anything from them, I am hoping they are all good

You may have been abrupt, but I can see where you are coming from. I don’t think it was attention seeking from the OP though. Was just looking for discussion. Sometimes I feel like people want to run away from the topic of mental health.

Piss weak post. Give yourself an uppercut.

It saddens me that you don't know what the general discussion section on a footy forum might contain. If you want to read about footy this section is not the place. Your lack of comprehension isn't any one else's fault.

Worst post I’ve ever seen on here.

No surprises as to who it was from.
