Luke Brooks - Mega Thread

Good teams make average playmakers look good. Bad teams make good playmakers look average.

It's a topic thats like a dogs chasing it's tail, you'll never get it [love watching a dog chasing it's tail]
There is an argument for both sides hense the pages and pages of debate about Luke.
I support Brooks, but will concede that if the fowards aim up and luke doesnt, a move of Hastings to ½ and AD to ⅝ is on the cards.
It was there for all to see on the weekend. DCE kicks a 40-20, changes the point of attack when there's a man short, always draws and passes, reads and reacts....Brooks.... goes through the motions. Can't wait for Hastings.

Prince was great. One of the best. Always moving forward with the ball at speed and putting the defence on the back foot. Always making the right decision. His team was scoring 50 points regularly with a no name backline. How is he not great?
2005 we had a cracking backline. hodgo, whatuira, elford, richards and fitzh……. Ok maybe not cracking but good, good enough to win the comp. Price was a prince but.

Benji! Plenty of internationals in that bunch. They were underrated at the time though. Probably why we stole the Comp.

FWIW our bigger problem is getting bashed up in the forwards and an inability to defend mistakes. No halfback will overcome that.

Yes mate, I see your point, similar posts have been stated before, I also get other peoples take on it.
You could still be talking about the same thing throughout the year and not enjoy the footy.
We once again have not got a good roster so there will be flaws in our game right across the park, try to enjoy it for what its worth. It's not life threatening, is it? 👍

I don't think our roster is as bad as most seem to believe. I also think Brooks has a role to play, I just think our best chance is with Hastings.

No

Benji had played one test match only and that was in 2005 - he was still a kid.

Sadly, you are correct. Just hope we still aren't having the Brooks/Yes or No debate in another 5 years. It's got that feeling about it though☹️
Has a knack of convincing coaches he's still gonna be a superstar

Still doesn't have any long kicking game, still doesn't know how to execute plays off the back of a line break, doesn't play instinctive footy and goes missing when it matters

He has some positives too of course, a good running game, short passing and short kicking but man it'd be nice to have a 7 who can pick off lazy defenders, turn momentum with long kicking or play fast off the back of a line break

I wonder if Hastings too, can prove to be a better player than Tyson Gamble.

Guy looks a likely winner, tbh.
The guys dismissing his ability have posters of Nofo on their walls...

Nofo should go play for Batley Bulldogs or with whatever 2nd div club BJ is at.

Luke Brooks is very good at putting guys into space. He passes the ball into space, so that the next player can run onto the ball at speed. I promise you if he was playing in the same team as Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and James Tedesco, he would be rated as one of the best halfbacks in the game.

Go watch James Tedesco highlights from when he was a tiger. More often than not, Brooks was involved in setting up opportunities for him to get in space. Tedesco had to change his game last year after repeated injuries to Keary. Previously Cronk did the same role (but better). He couldn't get enough space at 3rd receiver or even 2nd, which is where he would normally stand. It was so bad, he just couldn't get the ball when he wanted, so he had to move into 1st receiver.

The reason the third receiver is important is because they are often put in a 3-on-3 situation. The centre and winger will be aiming to deceive the defensive structure by running/changing lines. Luke at Laurie last year. He would chime in at 2nd or 3rd receiver last year, often setup by Brooks. That showed that Brooks can make space for players if they are good enough to take advantage of the space provided.

Brooks can make players better, but they need to see the opportunities he can create. His players need to run on to the ball with more speed. Catch the ball at a higher strike rate. Take a ball in hard contact, so he feels more confident to play later at the line.

Look at the way Cleary plays. He gives insane service to his outside men, and that's because those guys just don't drop the ball. And if they do, he knows it's no issue cause they defend really well. Managing a set is easy, because there is always someone who comes up with a hard run if they are struggling at any point in a set (Brian To'o, James Fisher Harris, Moses Leota). So he rarely has to kick from inside his 40m without a fast play of the ball.

Tedesco left because the club were totally inept and unable to fix their defence. It turns out that it was a coaching issue, because when Teddy got to the Roosters, they weren't happy with his defense. However they've been coaching him is obviously leaps and bounds above us back then. Sheens being back here should fix a lot of problems. The players in our own system all need to be coached in the same way, so when they make first grade, they're not learning an entirely new style of play. Again, look at Penrith...same style of football in every grade.
