I can understand the argument some are making about the early release of Thomas Mikaele and now Luciano being good business as it gives us extra cap money to front load some of our squad.
There have been 2 different types of situations where we have released players earlier than their contracts stipulated.
The first is a situation where I consider that we have been quite generous and have released players early on either compassionate grounds (eg. Corey Thompson) or because they have had very good offers that we were either not willing or able to match and the players were not going to be here the following season anyway. (eg. Luciano, Thomas Mikaele)
Generally those players would have been regarded as having provided us with good service and as having been fairly loyal in their time with us.
Then of course there is the second situation where players were tankers or trouble makers and played it out in the media doing their best to make the club look bad and I think everyone is well aware of who they were and I won't bother mention their names here, but I am giving Luciano the benefit of the doubt and I am not including him in that category.
I view the first situation as something that could be viewed as fairly admirable on the part of the club as it takes into account player welfare, so assuming that we have let Tom Mikaele and Luciano leave on good terms and we now have this extra cap money that we can front load players that we are wanting to keep I see that as a reasonable situation.
Now let's get on to where I see the potential problem in all this. We have let 2 forwards go that you could argue were probably our best chance of providing some sort of impact. This has really weakened our forward stocks which weren't very strong to start with. You've only got to look at the bench that Noddy has put up for the next game against the Dogs to realize that we are not in a great position.
The next problem is that we now have 2 position in the top 30 that we are obliged to fill in the next few weeks. Allowing for the fact that Sheens has said that he would like the new coach to be on board/announced before we do any signings so that they can be part of that decision making makes me feel very nervous.
All I can say is that if we haven't got a new coach and some fairly impressive signings already lined up or not too far off, this club is going to be in a world of pain in the not too distant future.
I'm not sure about anyone else but after that second half capitulation against the Silvertails and then learning of Geo's passing, if this fiasco earns us our first wooden spoon It will no doubt mark the lowest point in my time supporting the Wests Tigers and there have been some very low points.
