Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Twal now looks like he’s gone for the season , we have released two other forwards , with no signings incoming . Now if u have watched any of the nsw cup games u would know that there is no forwards worth bringing up , so what the hell are we going to field for the rest of the season , we could see some record scores against us for the rest of the year , god help us poor supporters
the return Warriors game.WOW

Lodge and Brown would add some aggression that is badly needed..
We need to address the forwards urgently as getting flogged weekly done not help your brand.

The thought of facing Penrith is nightmare stuff.

Mate I did exactly that playing for Willoughby in the late 70's, Sat union and Sun league, school footy during the week. Wow what a small world.
We played against Pymble too I think, were you black and white? or was that Asquith? was it called Kentwell Cup??
Kentwell cup was the rugby comp I played in, I played for the bank nsw

I wouldn't believe much that comes out of the Kennel. Hell, I could have made that same crap up. The funny thing is that bulldogs are so deluded they actually think they are a desirable club to sign with. They as big a joke as us and I'd seriously doubt Hastings would leave us to go there.
No idea.

IMHO players better than Laurie are (in the order of preference):
Tedesco, T Trbojevic, Ponga, Walsh.

All other NRL FBs are either as good or behind Laurie.🐅
Tb honest, I wouldn’t be opposed to Lauri being given some time at 5/8 and playing To’a back there.
Id consider a decent contract for Ruben Garrick to leave manly and play fullback.
He is robust and quick, and quickly developing the skills needed there through exposure. Manly have an abundance of outside backs.

Played there plenty of time, I played for Hills Hawkes. The worst is so North Sydney Oval!
Yep, played there too. It was like concrete too but the worst thing was the sideline which ran at a completely weird angle to the grandstand. Our wingers could never handle it, they used to run out all the time when they ran down the grandstand side.

I love the people saying let’s go after these bottom of the table fringe players, last thing we need to do now is panic buy, we need to be patient, otherwise we will be back in this position we are in, 5 years from now. We got api and papli’i, some experience in our pack and also a few to come back from injury that will be better for it. Promote a couple of our better young players (there’s not many in nsw cup) and then take next year as a loss already, go big in the market the following year. By then stefano and a couple of our other young forwards will be well versed in nrl level as well as simpkin if we can keep him. It’s not gunna be a matter of sign Lodge, sign brown now! That’ll just set us back, realistically they aren’t the fix and unless you get them for biscuits it’s only gunna set us back, we need young, hungry. Hopefully if we somehow convince Ciraldo he can convince a player like Leniu to come over.
The problem is the chicken comes before the egg.
That is the law of attraction.
You have to be appearing attractive to attract someone or something. Or you just throw a lot of cash at something as an alternative.

Hanging out for the next huge marquee to be interested in helping a bunch of kids grow within this comp is not realistic.

We need some experienced players in and around the squad to complement.
It doesn’t have to cost us an arm and a leg but it will be a worthwhile consideration of our cap money.

The problem with our past signings
Cleary era.
Paid over the odds for average to good players at the top of their game.
If, Packer, Matolino and Reynolds were fit and firing 2 seasons in to their contract it’s possible they wouldn’t of been terrible signings but they declined and we’re surrounded by other players on a similar decline.
Madge era.
Tried to bye players that can deliver the culture without being able to deliver a performance.
Tamou peachy etc are value signings from a cost perspective. But from an output perspective they were also on the decline,
paid a bench salary but we’re signed with the hope that we can extract starter performances from them.

Both strategies had merit and could of paid off to a point.
But they failed because the personal they contracted were on a decline.

Similar to signing Nathan Brown.
We might pick him up for 500k, he will work his but off in defence but will wear out quicker then he would at a club where he isn’t the focus. So you need to ask yourself if your signing Nathan brown on his own, is he worth 500? What if he lasts 1-2 seasons max.

Wow. These are some of my thoughts exactly!

I talk about the tigers with my dad and I said when Garrick was still very new to first grade the tigers should seriously go after him. Very solid, fast player who is an awesome kicker; Exactly what they have needed for so long.

Might get shouted down, but I just don't see Laurie ever becoming a great full back. Any position if I'm honest.

He was good last season and has been good (mostly) this year, but to me he just looks like he plays better than the player he really is, if that makes sense? Punching above his weight and I don't think he'll sustain it long term.

Apart from the game before last, he is never there for an offload and is caught out of position often. In fairness, he pulls off a few try saving tackles, but he'd be close to missing just as many letting them in.

I like To'a much better there and think he's worth investing in for that position.

Also, in reply to an earlier post, Garrick is a far better full back and he isn't even his club's first choice. Admittedly, he is behind Trbojevic, but still I wouldn't have Laurie anywhere near the (equal?) 5th best in the comp.

I think you could add Papenhuyzen, Sloan, Mitchell, Hynes, Brimson, Meaney, Wighton and Gutherson as better full backs to those already mentioned and a couple don't even play there any more.

PS: I played fullback. At my peak, I reckon I would have been ranked around 12,832nd in Australia. 😉

Twal is a weird one.

Watched the hit. Seem light contact to start with that knocked him out and may have had a secondary knock on impact with the ground.

Reminds me when ufc fighters loose their chin from too many head knocks and get knocked out easily.

Think he is a high probability to retirement

I'm not so sure it's an accumulated affect - just a very heavy hit with no give (ground impact).

When they showed it, I think Burton was pissed at the hit (for some reason?) and as they landed his forearm/fend slammed his head into the turf like he was grounding a try.

Not implying he meant to intentionally hurt him, but his head had nowhere further to travel having hit the ground whilst the brain continued its momentum towards a stationary skull, meaning the meninges had far less impact absorption.
