Wests Tigers Coaches

We should already have a coach I can’t believe we punt our head coach to then stuff around getting a new one we could have had one organised already if the club were smart operators , if your going to punt your coach you find his replacement first it’s not hard and I’m sure it could be done

I’m also confused with this decision. Madge had another season. The powerbrokers could have signed a coach for 24 beyond? One possible explanation is their target renewed at his club with a get out clause, then vacancies came up at other clubs, so they cleared a car park space. I understand that a lot of problem solving decisions need to be reactionary but we seem to be king of the knee jerkers.

Here's a few suggested reasons why Maguire was moved on =

Not intending to re-sign Maguire
Not intending to continue with him past 2022
Feedback from agents they want certainty surrounding the coach
Club wants to return to a "finishing school" status
Recruit new coach who has a proven record of progressing juniors
New coach wanted position vacant

I’ll interject.
Sure he doesn’t ‘get’ the current ‘us’ but he did get the sheens style and set up back then. A lot of his inspiration to coach after football came from his time under Sheens.
Morris started with us In 2007. The year after we tried to go back to back in the competition. At that stage all and sundry would of believed we had a competitive roster. However the years of 2007 2008 were filled with a mixture of a roster trying to stay at the top of the game but not quite having the same effect going through a transition period of young superstars needing to become consistent key players and ageing vets retiring or moving on from the club. 2009 had the hallmarks of a refreshed roster not quite old enough or experienced enough to really challenge. He left end of 2009. The following 2 years with a slight change to the 2009 personal we made the finals. The last time we were successful. Morris experienced all of the above as part of the roster, in Half, 5/8, Hooker or bench and seen first hand what Sheens and the coaching staff around him did to get a side containing a couple of young superstars winning a premiership off youthful enthusiasm and experienced leaders whom then left the club be forced to themselves come of age and become leaders for the next group of juniors.
At the Sharks since 2010 and 2014 Morris was a cog in once again another rebuild period of establishing another refreshed roster under a transitioning of coaches and styles from Ricky Stuart to Shane Flanagan and was 2 years off being a part of that premiership glory.
In my opinion has learnt more about coaching through these lessons than any of the other candidates.
Morris was a thorough professional as a player, he wasn't the best player, but he got the most out of what he had, Sheens used him poorly during his time here.
Morris never missed a game through injury or suspension in his 3 years at the club, he looked after his body, and his work ethic probably rubbed off on some players, as we had a pretty good run from from 2009 to 2011.

Sure, the responsibility to win games is on the players who take the field. What we’re talking about here though, is that extra 10% of effort. Where does that adrenaline rush come from?
I think some people call it hysterical strength. I don’t want to embarrass Nofa, but he gave us a classic example when he could have jumped over a house to chest bump Hastings after that field goal. When have you seen him do that to catch a ball?
When Sheens was punted from the Cowboys he studied sports psychology and suggested that the job description of a head coach was 20% footy and 80% the psychology of motivation. He proved that in the following 2 years.
The players may be the ones on the field doing the hard yards, but the victories will only come when the entire organisation is singing from the same hymn book.
When a powerbroker says he and other powerbrokers are not responsible for what happens on the field, then you know we have a problem. We need to fix the attitude, and the best way to do that imo, is to become a reputation building organisation, it’s similar to Sheens’ “development club” but it must include the top and everyone else.
Where's that 'psychology of motivation' now
Someone needs to get into the players heads they are the only ones that can do the job on the field..where's the psychologist we need him desperately

I did see him with coaching staff when he was with Pathways at the local Woolooware cafe. All seemed happy and he obviously was very good at communication and delegation. At the time, I wished he was at WTs.

1..Fair enough after 2023...
2..Madge was extended until end of 2023...
3..Agents had certainty until the end of 2023...
4..Should never have gone away from it to start with...
5..Absolutely,but the pathways should have never been neglected, the NRL coach should have gotten juniors all ready for FG selection, not go to FG and have to be developed there, only to get experience and now how as their career progressed...
6..May the best candidate be selected on experience and knowledge of the game...

I agree with you about pathways. That has always been WTs' strength. We have lots of talent in the juniors so selecting the right candidate is very important. I am confident the club has this right. I backed Morris but if the club goes with Ciraldo I support it as well.

I expect that this is already in place given what we are hearing from the players but the basics are looking after your mates. Put your mates (and therefore the team) before yourself in every aspect related to the team and the club. If they don't - sit them in reggies to contemplate it.

I think the problem has been a lack of depth to take the second step. We have to experiment with our young bloods and expose them to FG footy in preparation for 23.

We have to trust that the cleaner going through the place is evidence that Sheens is preparing space for a new forward pack. It is killing us now but we should be in a position to purchase some additional quality, ball playing, forwards.

Once we have that in place the psychology of having a potent pack will allow the backs to develop. The development of our team has to be predicated on having a solid forward pack to build off.

To be honest Paws,we had a great base of juniors to develop and educate...it really is a shame that the pathways were neglected, who knows what talent could be playing for us now if they were still in place.....

The board which extended Maguire is the same board which wanted him out during the extension period. Did all of them have the same loss of memory? This is the sort of uncertainty agents and others are trying to avoid.

Not intending to re-sign Maguire..they had already resigned him for 2 years.
Not intending to continue with him past 2022.. they tried to sack him before 22 started.
Feedback from agents they want certainty surrounding the coach.. They installed the uncertainty by being indecisive.
Club wants to return to a "finishing school" status.. Fair enough, but why did it take 12 years to come to that decision?
Recruit new coach who has a proven record of progressing juniors..they could do that at anytime. There's no need to throw the toys out the cot.
New coach wanted position vacant.. Correct. Everything is on hold. more uncertainty.

That is a very good question, and possibly the main reason we're looking for a new coach. Sheens probably needs a different style of coach to manage the situation. possibly an inexperienced coach?

If we are after the 2005 style football I can see ciraldo being in the closest system of resemblance.
Next is walker Bros
Or possibly payten only speculation as I haven’t watched any cows games

My apologies I should have written didn't intend to re-sign him after 2023 and rumours were he would be gone at end of 2022. He should have been gone end of 2021. We need a coach who can develop juniors from Pathways. The Board corrected that decision this month.
Hence the ties to Ciraldo and Morris, both developed players in NSW Cup. But Morris also developed them in first grade as well why Ciraldo just hasn’t coached them like Morris has but he’s still been apart of the Panthers success. I believe one of them is 100% next coach I would give Payton a chance if he really wanted the job given his history with us, but I don’t see that happening just yet.

Our two new recruits for 2022 is a good start but we have to keep the ball rolling with more good sensible recruiting otherwise we won't get out of the rut we're currently in.

The new coach must be fresh and very communitive, not relying on heavy swearing as a means of encouraging players to play to their best ability.
