Isaiah Papali’i #265

There was a cooling off period then. That why the NRL got rid of it - to stop clubs getting players to backflip.
No i'm wrong - however the Moltzen case was entirely different. According to Wiki he was still under contract to WT when he signed with Saints. Even though WT had said he had permission to look elsewhere they changed their mind and wouldn't sign a release.

He’s the best forward in the game. In the top 3 anyway. You do not roll over and accept financial compensation. I wouldn’t be surprised if his nose is out of joint that he only negotiated a deal worth 600k. He probably feels he’s worth more. And he’d be right about that, but that’s on him and his manager for negotiating a shitty deal. If Parra are secretly in his ear telling him they can keep him on for 850 then them‘s the breaks.
I would strongly suspect that is what is occurring - he's been told he can get more money to stay where he is.

That's bad luck for Parra, especially that this money they are now offering didn't exist until they lost a number of other players they wanted to retain, e.g. Mahoney.

IP is probably being advised by his management not to say anything specific.

The reason why we keep getting this is they know our management have no backbone. They've always caved. Matterson, Cleary, alolai.

Time for JP to finally shine.
Have they always caved? Have there ever been instances where a release was denied but it never made it to the media?

Tigers didn't release Luciano when he made the request. It was Tigers who initiated the ultimate move months later when they wanted to clear up cap space.

The Eels surprising were caught out. They re-signed Brown. It must be embarrassing especially that he is heading to WTs.

This is where the club should grow a set, release a statement saying, “in regards to Isiah’s recent comments about where he will be in 2023, it will in fact be here at our club“.
I honestly don't think the club knows, personally it's up to the player to publicly state he intends to honour the deal, as mahoney and kikau did for the bulldogs, he's never really done that which is concerning, have a bad feeling about this

I'm not sure what you mean. The only way he doesn't come here is he sits out playing for 3 years or we allow him to break his contract. There is no grey area.

I'd Say there is plenty going on in the background at both clubs. Of course Parramatta want to keep him and they will be looking at every angle to do so especially if he as indicated he wants to stay - any club would do the same. It seems as soon a player publically declares he wants out of a contract that clubs will bend to make it happen. A real test for Sheens and Benji to see if they can salvage this one.

Exactly. There is no need for the Tigers to say or do anything publicly as well. I mean if someone asks you can say he has a contract here registered for the next 3 years and then just drop it.

Privately you can sit down with him and say we really want you here and expect you to be a great asset for our club and a key member of us rising up the ladder. You just piss in his pocket.

In 6 months time it will all be forgotten.

Of course he can choose not to play NRL and not get paid.

There shouldn't be and legally there isn't any other option.

I’m sure we could even restructure his contract if it was about $$$
We're paying him about 1.9 over 3 years, that's roughly 633k a year, how much can we pay him before we're paying overs for a forward, maybe 700k but he's a forward not a half, we would then be running the risk of putting our cap out of whack again. How much do you reckon he's worth GNR4LIFE ?

It's no secret they tried the same with Mahoney - The dogs just trumped their money every time they tried...

Papalii is as marquee player as we've ever had - His attitude, consistency and effort on effort on effort - Will change our team..
And every player in it. He's infectious... We can't stuff this up!!

He's worth 800k to us, Easily....
He changes the game - changes the result.

I wonder if it's just about the money though....

It won't be. He is probably happy there as well.

None of it matters. We are paying him a more than fair wage for the next 3 years. Sure he didn't get a Fifita contract but that is extremely rare.

We should stop talking about it though because it's a non issue at this point. If he chooses to sit out next season that is a different matter but my take is let him sit it out.

I'm going to follow my own advice though and try and shut my peep hole on this topic. I hope the club does the same thing.

Would be good if it worked like that - It just doesn't though...
Especially now with the RLPA

Last person to do it was Tallis - Even then it was only a year...

I just quoted 3 who agitated a release and we were soft. Despite talking a big game in the media.

Cleary, Alolai and matterson.

Luciano wasn't one of them.

The precedent has been set.
