Isaiah Papali’i #265

Adrian Proszenko in the Herald has just come up with this latest garbage-how poor ole' Izz is now hankering to return to NZ (and maybe play for the Warriors). It's really simple. He either plays for us, or he doesn't play at all-either for Parra or for the Warriors.
It's really not too much of a difficult concept to grasp.

I didn't mind NRL 360 when Iken and Sampson hosted it...Bwaith is such a tool, just loves to dig up dirt on the show and the Tigers are easy fodder for him...I hope Fox axe the show or change the host next year
Actually I don't hate Bwaif as much as I used to On occasions you can see that he is actually trying to at least show that he is trying to be impartial.

I did say on occasions.

Even the drunken Buzzard Slothfield seems to be a bit more pro Wests Tigers since Sheens has been here.

But the one that really gets me is Kent who is really a piece of work. Talk about good cop, bad cop as others have already mentioned, anything to be controversial, but one thing he is consistent with is his hate for the Wests Tigers.

Hope Geyer smashes him.

I respect your views and can understand why there is noise.

The point I would like to make is that at the time that we signed Papali'i way back in November 2021 he was already acknowledged as the best second rower in the game, having won the Dally M.

Sure he has followed up with great form this season but obviously if you are acknowledged as the best in the game in your position you would expect to be signed up for good money. Wests Tigers were also taking a risk no knowing whether there may be form slumps serious injuries etc.

At the time Parramatta were offering him a pittance and we offered him 2-3 times more which he and his manager couldn't sign up to quick enough, and for 3 years to boot.

This was also at a time with end of season reviews and question marks about the coach and his future constantly being bandied about in the media.

Also at the same time Luciano and his manager were asking for 700k which I suspect everyone, including Papali'i and his manager would have thought was overs, and taking into account that just about everyone thought that Papali'i was a better player all round than Luciano yet they still accepted 1.9 million over 3 years.

Obviously they thought it was a great deal and that they were getting top dollar and took it thinking there was no chance Luciano would eventually get offered more from the Cowboys, believing they were getting top dollar and also should have been under no illusion that they were signing up for a bottom 4 team, which all the so called experts were tipping.

So the point I am making is that at the time they thought they were getting better than fair money to go to a bottom 4 team.

Can't help buyer regret, it happens all the time, things change all the time and you take a risk with anything that you do, you just have to learn to live with it.

The contract has been signed and he is obliged to honour it for the next 3 years.
Completely agree. Unfortunately for the younger generations, they struggle to perform if they feel they got the rough end of the pineapple. (however ill informed or misguided the are). I’m dealing with a young professional at the moment. Fresh out of uni 23yo. Im paying her $90k, with mentoring, not over worked flexible with days off etc. What a wonderful opportunity I thought I am giving her? You would think they’d turn up every day on time with enthusiasm? 🙄

Good luck. Sounds like she could use some perspective.

I know what you mean .When I completed my B.Com/laws just over 50 years ago which I did part time over 7 years while working 38 hours /week I regarded the whole thing as nothing more than a door opener and success depended on performance and hard work
Many students who did their degree full time acted like they were "entitled" and turned out mediocrity in their early working years . Handwork Experience are worth a lot more than the degree

Just imagine if Pap received a pretty bad injury this year that would take him out for 1.5 to 2 years. Then the club turned around and said "actually its not in the best interest of the club to accept Papalii" or "its just to hard for the club to help with rehabilitation".
We wouldn't even be able to entertain the idea.
This is where the NRL and RLPA are in the wrong with how contracts are drawn out and honoured.
Exactly - if he does his acl this season Parra won't want anything to do with him - they will drive him to Concord

Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) CEO Clint Newton has issued a warning to Parramatta Eels forward Isaiah Papali’i saying that he and his management must honour the contract he signed with the Wests Tigers.

Papali’i signed a three-year contract with the Tigers worth an estimated $1.9 million but has since expressed a desire to renege on his deal and remain at the Eels.

Whilst Newton understands that players have personal reasons and other circumstances which can result in contracts being voided, it doesn’t apply to Papali’i in this instance.

“What we have told him and his management team is that essentially, it is their responsibility to honour the contract and not terminate,” Newton said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“There have been many situations over the last several years where there is mutual agreement to terminate.

“The Tigers haven’t looked for that.

“Papali’i and his team are well within their rights, like any other workplace, to request a termination.

“That’s not to say it should be granted or that it will be.

“As it stands, this is really a discussion between the two parties.

“Our expectation of players is that they honour their contracts.”

Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis told SEN 1170 that he and the club were confident that Papali’i would honour his contract.

Newton added that neither he nor anyone at the RLPA had made any steps in intervening and that the association would wait to see how it unfolds.

“Our involvement has just been to say that they have a responsibility to honour their contract,” he said.

“They are well within their rights to request a termination just like every other employee in this country.

“There is no expectation that a request would be accepted.

“If that doesn’t change, then you turn up to training and get on with it.”

Papali’i is expected to arrive at Tigers headquarters on November 1 to begin preparing for the 2023 season.

About time someone with any sort of power within the game came out and said this... I applaud Clint Newton.
