I swear to god, one of the biggest problems with our recruitment is that we overvalue our juniors.
A good player comes on the market and a lot of people scream ‘he’s not worth it, we’ve got some pimply faced, wet behind the ears, snot nosed punk in Flegg who will be great in 7 years time’…
Exactly. Christ sake we must be the only team to ever win harolds matts. No club gets as excited as us about a group of under 17s.
We need proven first graders

Pole - Yes he will be
Matamua - unknown as not tested properly
Ngatikaura - unknown as untested
Tumeth - unknown as untested
Madden - maybe
Kepaoa - maybe
Not lighting the world on fire…

The flying the flags of these kids with potential really irks me...
We've been doing that for a decade - It hasn't worked.

Matamua is regularly boasted on here into started sides,
He's been less than mediocre in his games.... That's not going to be fixed in one pre-season.
Looks 2 years away to me.

Well, when you cant sign players externally, juniors is your only hope. Whatever hope that may be.

Jeremiah Nanai is 19 and already a SOO player, the same age or younger than many of our great “prospects”.

If they aren’t ready for first grade now then it’s unlikely they will be.

That's crap
Plenty of blokes come on a bit later....
Cody Walker was 26...
Plenty of them.

Nanai is a freak - And they come along from time to time....
Not all kids are going to be that good that early.

And there have been plenty of other examples of players debuting at 19 or even younger, Sualli, Ponga etc.

The point is that we are pinning our entire future on junior development due to our inability to recruit established players when the uncomfortable truth is that every club is doing the same thing we are and in many cases are doing it better.

It happens in all sports. Anyone remember the great Australian and WA batsman Michael Hussey? He was 28 when he made his debut for Aust. He is probably one of the greatest cricketers I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Also he was a great team player and popular with his team mates.

We can all pick the superstar kids off the Highlight reels mate.
Out of the approximate 500 Current NRL players
How many were playing Origin at 19?
Seriously, Don't defend your stupidity with more stupidity...

We've signed Api and Papali'i and will make more signings....
That's hardly pinning our "Entire Future" You might be - I know I'm certainly not.

I can't count how many times I've said here - Kids won't teach Kids how to play NRL...

The club has totally ignored internal development over the last decade for whatever reason. That we're only now throwing money towards the pathways is a pretty bad look for the front office.
As per above, all that does is bring us up to speed with the rest of the comp, and it's not going to be an automatic springboard to getting back into the finals in the top grade.

Wow, that's one of the stupidest comments i've read on this forum over the past 20 years
I think it's fair to say that after a player has been developed he or she will either make it or not and age is not that relevant.
Some players who make grade at say 21, remain at their level of lalent for the rest of their careers. IMO there are more of these type of players than the opposite type eg Nanai.
A good talent scout in my day were looking everywhere for the 21 yr old guns that would provide longer value to the club.
Having said all this, there are a select number of champions who got better with age.
Like seasoned props and ½ backs who have further developed their trade even after 30.
So in essence he has a point but normally not the case. Some players are simply just not good enough.
Our players, regardless of who the coach is or what team they play for are always going to average. They're the ones I would release.
Some need further developing and hopefully our new coaches can provide that. They're the one I'd keep.
The task now is to determine who is who and rebuild.
We must have quality back and forwards to build a team on otherwise developing will be difficult.

As I said, We can all find something....
Here's one for you.

At 21 Jonathon Thurston was playing off the bench and let go by the Dogs
At 22 He played in the Premiership decider and won the Dally M

That's one hell of an improvement in 12 Months

Yep that's true, how long is a piece of string. He's a champion and at some stage they dropped 😉
One could say Benji was always going to great because he oozed confidence back at Keebra Park and was it Tim Sheens who allowed him to show his talent in games as long as he did it at training.
I remember watching Steve Rogers play who seemed to get better every year.

Remember ET's first year? He couldn't lay a hand on an attacker to make a tackle. He worked very hard over the off season to improve he defence and became the best defensive centre in RL as well Jack Gibson saying he was so quick he could turn off the lights and get into bed before it was dark.
