This final position of 2022 has actually helped with my expectations of 2023.
For every year since we won the Premiership I would go into with the off-season with a hopeful positive view.
By that I mean, I’m not in anyway thinking that a premiership or even a top spot in the finals is happening that year but at least there is a feeling the team will improve.
I think since Ivan walked out on us. I can recall my excuses and reasons for that optimism occuring.
There were signs in 2018 that we were developing a United and committed culture within the group and with the inclusion of a couple of top tier players we would transform again. My thoughts after 2018. We developed a decent culture and defensive attitude that kept us competitive but ultimately we didn’t score enough points to make the 8. A bit like the sharks in 2011.
2019. Oh we were so close, it just came down to a lack of composure in some tight contests. We can train that into the side and we’ll get there. Points wise and defence were pretty decent that year. Competitive for the most part but loss the games we needed to win.
2020. Reunioned by COVID. All our hopes and dreams were crushed when our superstar 18 year olds whom we trumpeted as a recruiting win could no longer get the game time in order to continue to develop. Shorter season, also mean’t the year really only favoured the teams that had the squads that were ready for that year.
2021. Not close by any margin, but probably the youngest side in the comp. Scored enough points to sit in the top 8 but just failed to defend them. Tidy that side of the game up and we’ll be ok.
2022. Nothing to write home about in attack and defence. Some players who would like to resign with the club are starting to show some individual form but still making errors or the wrong decisions for the team.
So new coach next year, worst attack and defence in the comp, only one young player that looks capable of being part of a tier 1 team and half the team heading out the door.
Api / Papali’i are golden recruits but are performing as a result of solid players and structures around them. There is still every chance Api becomes the 2018 version of himself with a forward pack that is clueless when it receives the ball and a backline that doesn’t know how to set itself up for attack. Papali’i could become the tireless lock who spent all day and night tackling for the Warriors coz no one else was up to the task.
The only way is up. But optimism’s this year are low and no amount of fluff articles about this player training the house down or this recruit or this new system are going to make me believe we have anything other than a 16th or 17th placed team.
