Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

This is wrong though, we have one spot left, not two.

A few pages like Zero Tackle have gotten mixed up and not included Matamua’s upgrade to the Top 30.
By my count we only have 28 officially signed in the top 30 unless I’m missing someone? Zero tackle have Will Smith and Josh Feledy as signed but neither have officially been included in too 30 as far as I’m aware.

I agree with all the posters before me. Plenty of depth in the Tigers engine room now. Signing Brown would be a waste of money and have the effect of blocking a young gun we are hoping to bring through. No need whatsoever. The more I think about it, if we were able to snare RTS, it would be brilliant. On the right deal of course........
So would rather throw some kid to the wolves rather than sign a seasoned 1st grader who might teach the kids how to become a 1st grader, and by the way once u take our starting pack I see only 2 other 1st grade players cop a few injuries and we could be back to last years crap

With the Chooks likely to be scrambling to hang into Sua'ali if a rumoured massive offer from Rugby arrives (and with him wanting Teddy's fullback spot anyway) might be worth a chat with Ted about having a final season or two back at his old club. Ted might relish the chance to play behind our new look pack. Certainly looks better than any he's played behind at WT before. Even at 29 he's still a match winner and likely to remain so for a good while yet! Sometimes long shots do come in!
I’m sure it’s been raised here before re his pottential Return. Some knowledgeable posters have said it very firmly, it will never happen.

Totally agreed.

Do not worry about this. Klemmer I have been told is a 3 year deal.

Bateman, what are you worried about:
Bateman leaves us to go back to Superleague as he did with Canberra 2 years into the contract... Woohoo! We get his next 2 best years and Superleague get him cheaper and closer to retirement.
Bateman rides us for last 2 years... Hey Bateman congratulations you can become a performance coach at 31 like Josh Jackson.

We needed muscle. Paps would become the next James Tamou if he had to carry our current forward pack.

What we need to ask is why does our form and grit drop. We have quality coming in, we have the center of excellence opening.... Will Robbie Farah (as Benji or Sheens won't) be able to keep the intensity up? Nathan Cayless could not and that was the worst surprise of 2022.

Look at how well the teams with a gritty coaches:
Cronulla picked up Craig Fitz, at Easts he would wressle anyone, anytime.
Cows picked up Payton who we know works the forwards hard.
Easts got Jason Ryles and Melbourne always build hard.

Contrast that too:
Brisbane who, sure have gone Okayish.
Titans who definitely don't have a gritty coaching staff.

We need grit and strong tackling. I truly worry as I thought Cayless would deliver this. Robbie we know goes hard. Harder then Cayless?
Ummm English please .. ??

Only played around 210 games including Test footy ...doesn't turn 30 until June

I'd say he be safe giving a 3 years contract ....more worried about what if the Roosters or Warriors came calling ......

He will want close to 950 k a season for the 1st 2 years ...everyone happy to pay that ...might duck some of that with a quality TPA ......Harry Triguboff ...Blue Wiggle ....any other wealthy benefactors he asks hopefully ...please
Great player , but he has a lot of brain snaps and can come up with a few errors , saying that I would have him in a heart beat but would not pay more than $ 800,000 for two seasons with a 3rd year in the clubs Favor

Yeah .. slimy Eels hoping to sign Marty Taupau asap .. they are saying that Brown will be released $600K immediately and signing Taupau on much less $$ will allow them to resign MM .. ?? Taupau is on $800+ wiff the SilverTails .. I still don’t think we need Brown but having him in our side will certainly give us an aggressive pack for sure.
Our coach staff looks pretty impressive too: Tim Sheens, Benji Marshall, Robbie Farah, David Furner and Ronnie Palmer. On another note Josh Mansour is to leave Souffs and join another Sydney club within days .. please don’t let it be us .. !!
Mansour we don’t need , so don’t worry .
If the slimmmy eels think they can off load brown and sign taupau for less than browns $600 there raving mad , they may even have to pay us some money to take him , so I can’t see how this all will help them keep Moses .

‘Experience and quality’: After spending $2.5m up front, Tigers turn to their backline

KEY POINTS

  • John Bateman was the “main domino to fall” in Tigers’ forward pack revamp
  • An outside back will be targeted to fill the club’s final roster position
  • Contract discussions with Luke Brooks and Adam Doueihi will begin in the new year

After eighteen months in the NRL’s volatile player market, around $2.5 million in contracts and endless innuendo, December 24 delivered Tim Sheens the Christmas gift he’d been waiting for.
English international John Bateman completed a Wests Tigers forward pack he no longer wants to tinker with.
Sheens described Bateman’s four-year deal, secured with a reported $250,000 transfer fee from Wigan and announced late on Boxing Day, as “the main domino I wanted to fall.”
At 29, Bateman brings more than 200 Super League and NRL games worth of experience as well as 25 Tests for England and Great Britain.

Between he and fellow signings David Klemmer, Api Koroisau and Isaiah Papali’i, the Tigers have added more than 800 games of NRL, Origin and Test experience to a forward contingent badly exposed by injury en route to a 2022 wooden spoon.
The recruitment drive started under Michael Maguire and delivered Koroisau and Papali’i last summer on $600,000-plus per annum.

The latter wavered and looked to stay at Parramatta before Klemmer and Bateman were secured through unconventional negotiations. The Tigers now turn to their backline and playmakers to build upon a vastly improved pack.
“We’ve got some quality forwards now and guys you can genuinely play behind, with grunt and go forward,” Sheens said of his revamped forwards.

“We’ve got one more position to fill in our top 30 and we’ve got a couple of ideas with that.

“John was the main domino I wanted to fall. Now we’ve got him in our forwards we’re looking at the backline and who could be added there.
“The experience of these guys we’ve signed like Klem and John, that’s the real attraction.
“That experience and quality makes a difference given we had issues with depth and injuries to key forwards this year.”

The Tigers’ recruited quartet will be called on to mentor a raft of rising young forwards led by Stefano Utoikamanu and Shawn Blore as they return from lengthy injury lay-offs, with Joe Ofahengaue, Alex Twal and Fonua Pole other regular NRL options.
Half-turned-lock Jackson Hastings and veteran skipper James Tamou have led a Tigers exodus that has also included back-rowers Luke Garner, Kelma Tuilagi, Zane Musgrove, Jacob Liddle and Tyrone Peachey.

Sheens added that Bateman is an option at lock as well as in an edge partnership with Kiwi international Papali’i.
The veteran coach holds no concern over the four-year deal that will see Bateman turn 33 by its completion in 2026, pointing to Dale Finucane’s impact at Cronulla this year after signing on the same terms at the same age.

While mindful of an ever-shifting market, bringing Nathan Brown back from Parramatta takes a back seat given the Tigers options up front.

‘New signings’: Sheens says returning Tigers duo like fresh recruits

Sheens would not be drawn on interest in former Tiger and Eels lynchpin Mitchell Moses after meeting with him in the UK, and said attention eventually turns to who calls the shots long-term behind his new forwards when training resumes on January 5.
Halves Luke Brooks and Adam Doueihi are both off-contract and have never had a Tigers pack of this quality in front of them.
“Brooksy’s been in rehab with a bit of a calf injury and Adam returns next week as planned,” Sheens said.

“I have spoken to the players and they know that the plan is to have those [contract] conversations in the New Year.
“How far into the New Year, we’ll wait and see, but right now the focus is on this team we’re building now for 2023 because we have to get some results right here, right now.”

Sorry please explain...

If someone said "we can swap Luke Keary for AD". I wouldn't be able to say "done" fast enough.
Keary would be a better NR7 then Brooks and is blocked with Tedesco moving to 5/8. Makes perfect sense and I would take Keary > Moses.

Keary, played trained and worked with Cooper Cronk....

I can only think there must be an injury I don't know about....
concussion - he's cooked

yeah but that's from a SEN interview

Nah, RTS for me. A touch younger and a nicer guy.
RTS, Tedesco... Look either is top shelf and a proven first grader, heck proven Aust representative.

I worry about ripple effects on the team. I know we have Laurie + Naden + Staines who have all played together under Penrith...
That said no way were going to hold Fullback open for Laurie, he is a good player, a very good player and a great Tiger... but not a GUN player in RTS league.

Tedesco's heart was stolen by a big fat Chicken. Which is sad, as for some reason players LOVE the flight deck club of Easts who will toss him at the first sign of trouble.

"now hearing that Keary is injured" What is with Easts training:
Boyd Cordner
Jake Friend,
Keary (maybe?)
There seems to be a bit too many medical retirements. I believe Boyd's and Jake's are genuine.

I also see Luke Keary IF UNINJURED an option. Concussion and/or Neck damage forget it. Unsure what price but Keary has played finals at 5/8 and worked with Cooper Cronk a fair bit. Could be a better 7 option then Brooks and we get Brooks at 5/8 where he should be.

I could definitely see Laurie being 5/8 or a Craig Wing/Matt Bowen style utility.

Thanks Bathurst Tiger but there's nothing earth shattering there really. What you glean from it is that the spine is not settled , other than Api at hooker. It does hint that a back maybe on the horizon whether it be Moses, RTS or Welsby, all of them unlikely but possible.

Please don't tell me we'd consider paying 600k for Brown.
