Isaiah Papali’i #265

The rule was introduced to stop players cannon balling kickers in the legs when they were kicking or just completed a kick. Yes, technically Ice had broken the rule, but a little bit of common sense could be used by the refs. Ice hit the ground way before making contact with the kicker and the contact was a result of bouncing off the ground. There was zero intent, but I guess you just can't give blokes like Sutton a excuse to blow the whistle
Yeh very pradantic

The ref/bunker do not understand this part:
".......a little bit of common sense."

4 really dumb situational decisions in the last 4 minutes;

Kick off: Nofa just batted the ball out. Should have tried to catch it. A knock on is the same result as the bat out there ie a turnover.

Ice: hitting the kicker was the worst possible result for us. He had to put pressure on without hitting the kicker. No pressure would have been preferable. Worst case the scores are all tied up.

Last play: No set up for a FG to tie it up.

Last Play: after running all the time off the clock then trying to turn it back inside for a FG that had not been set up properly instead of using the 4 on 2 overlap that had been created or a grubber into the corner.

We have been a dumb football team for a long time now. Recent effort can’t be questioned though.

Yep. I was going to blame the coaching staff because we made a lot of mistakes. I thought Api took the wrong option a lot of times as well.

On the flip side the coaching staff have identified and promoted some players that are doing exceptionally well. Bula and Pole to me are stars. Bateman has been huge. Kleemer has been exceptionally good.

I want more out of IP. I don't think he is performing up to standard compared to what he produced the last couple of seasons.

We are trying hard and we've played some really good footy this year but we need to be more consistent. Our squad is looking to me like it is on the way up. I think the coaching staff are doing a great job in creating a better team but I think this season is looking over way too early. If we are going to turn this season around we need to do it now.

Agree. After many false dawns in the last 7 years I am confident we have turned the corner. We’ve played well the last 6 weeks for 3 wins. Effort should be a given for professionals but that hasn’t always been the case with the Tigers. Their effort cannot be questioned now.

I think the effort is typically there. It's the talent that is missing. I think we have a lot more talent in the team now. The coaching staff are developing a decent team.

It's a shame we aren't higher up the ladder.

Dumb play as it turns out could have pressured the kick without diving, but he was trying to make an effort i do respect that still wished he hadnt gone all in. But in saying that it shouldnt have even got to that point we should have dealt better with the short kick off.

He was supposed to put pressure on the kicker without making contact. That is the rules. You can't make a poor play into a good one by stating the effort was good.
Don't know how you can say it wasn't an effort play by a player, who from what I saw, came pretty close to charging down a field goal attempt to protect a lead in the dying minutes of a game.

Sure it went wrong and he made contact with legs totally unintentionally, but by the same token he could have done nothing, not put any pressure on the kicker and allowed him an easier shot with no pressure at all for the field goal.

It's football and we are the Wests Tigers that can usually find a way to lose a game, but we are improving and that has to be a pleasing thing. I mentioned elsewhere that I was at the game and from what I saw, even at 18-0 we were the better team everywhere except on the scoreboard.

Last season they would have run riot and put a score on us, as a matter of fact they did.

I have to say that as good as Fogarty's kicking game was there was still an element of luck attached to all 3 of their tries and they were still unable to score against us other than through those kicks, I won't even bother talking about how at least one of those tries should not have been awarded.

At some stage we find the way to win games in those sorts of situations and luck starts to come our way, Isaiah goes for the charge down and misses his legs and Jamal Fogharty accidentally kicks Asaiah in the head and we get the penalty for a careless contact with the head.

I guess that's just footy and some day the ball starts to bounce our way.

I don't care if he made an effort and executed poorly because all I care about is winning games. When a player stuffs up like that at a critical time he shouldn't be excused.

It's black and white thinking to state his only options were to make an effort and also give away a penalty or just stand there and do nothing.

I also understand in another time that wouldn't have been a penalty and that penalty in a lot of ways is against the spirit of the game but it doesn't matter. I want wins and I expect highly paid players who are key recruits to perform better than what he has and that mistake was a shocker. Not an effort play. It was stupid.

Overall I'm pretty happy with what is happening at the club but we need to not make mistakes like that. We needed to win that game.

I'm disappointed we aren't doing better. At the same time I'm surprised at how good a squad we have. It's like the players are better than what I thought they were but we haven't really taken advantage of that.

Fair response mate, I agree with a lot of your sentiments.

Good post, well said.
