Charlie Staines #262

Andrew Webster in SMH claims Staines will go back to Penrith
Meanwhile, players like centre Tyrone Peachey returned from the Wests Tigers this season on less money and re-signed for 2024 for less money again. Charlie Staines will also return to Penrith after one season at the Tigers for less money.

He stated he signed with us with the pilot to play fullback.
We give him one game at fullback, he played very well with his sheer speed injecting himself into our backline and causing the opposition plenty of headaches, but then put him back on the wing.
Makes you wonder if they are preparing for the possibility of Edwards taking a big money offer elsewhere....

He's played there more than once, First game was ordinary - 2nd showed improvement...
Still doesn't have much of a pass etc.
He's behind Bula on upside alone.... And is too small for the wing for me.
He’s much bigger and taller than the Gold Coast winger Aliofana-Khan. Not as quick but somewhere in his vicinity speed wise.
It’s a must to have at least one winger who is exceptionally fast and Staines aside we have nobody who fits that category.

Wow.

So they swap him for peach then get him back. Did we just get screwed?

How did we get screwed?

We only signed Staines to 1yr deal which was dumb to start with - he leaves after 1 season it’s on us. Assume Staines to Center at the Panthers if he goes back.

I would do whats needed to grab Turuva said that kid will make it before his debut and he has just started - can cover fullback also for Bula if needed.

That’s it, I’m putting a boycott on recruiting Penrith players. That includes the hopes I have for recruiting Luai.
Looks like the tigers just need to keep building from within and try and pick the scraps out of the teams where we can.
That said let’s put our focus on our young talented backs like Mason, Karnib, Solo etc. it’s gunna take about 10 years for it to come together but it will be worth it.

Concerning that Panthers reserve grade is more enticing than our first grade.
I wonder if we could get longi, Jenkins or McLean.

Surely the money differential is minimal to non-existant. I can't see him at this stage of his career knocking back an extra 20k. I really hope we up our offer to him or we have some fast outside backs on our radar.

I like his finishing , but really question his ability to get sets started . We are up the creek with wingers , especially if we move Tupou into centre .

Jeez it's almost like he got injured and before he came back a better fullback option emerged.

Staines hasnt been shown any respect by the Tigers in terms of selection or Contract renewal.

PS - who would pass up the chance to go to the Panthers?
Staines was in the team when he perforated his bowel.

He then returned for a single game in reserves following an extended lay off and was immediately jettisoned into the starting side the following week.

How is that not 'showing respect' in terms of selection?

Additionally, when is it the role of the head coach to 'show respect' with who he selects each week?

Weird take.
