Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I love Bula. Thought he was amazing this year, particular playing in a pretty poor backline. I loved his fitness and how his body stood up to a fair bit of attention. He's talented and I hope he will be a really good first grader and hopefully our long term fullback, but generational talent? That's a pretty high bar to jump.
My concern with Bula is what I call second year syndrome. Whenever a new guy breaks into the top grade and gets the big bucks, his follow up season can be quite patchy, for a variety of reasons.
I think he’s going to get targeted a lot more this year and being lightly framed, hope he doesn’t get too much punishment.
Remember a similar thing happened to Teddy, who will ever forget Ryan James breaking his jaw at LO. Pleaded accidental but I was directly in line and believe me he had destruction in his eyes.
I hope Bula gets through ok and had another good year and puts my syndrome to bed.
We need both wingers working hard out of the back field to take some pressure off him.

I agree. Good sign is I thought he was targeted pretty heavily second half of last year and seemed to stand up to it. Don't think Nofo is the guy you want taking the heavy work off Bula.

I'm all in on Bula at 1, but if medical reports on Paps ankle are positive, he would be huge for us. Imagine Bula and Staines on the right, Toa and Tupou on the left, with Paps' speed and ball playing chiming into the backline? We could tear teams apart if our halves get it right.
So, Hypothetical...

What if we swapped Tupou and Bula in 2023. Would we be praising Tupou's work at nr1 and lamenting how many tries Bula let through on the wing? Honestly would we?

Paps would be huge for us. He is broken, he could add something to the team. Latrell played in the final game for souths from the bench. He hardened the Souths defense and looking on got a better team.

I don't think we should sign Paps (unless he comes for stupid low money. 400k a season, ofcourse).

Bula has done great at Fullback. Yet I can remember Cronk saying of Slater "no one picks up how much work Billy does for us in defense". Bula is in his rookie year. He doesn't have Fullback sense, he is learning to 'read plays' not perfect his defensive positioning.

It would be great to get someone like Paps or Gutho to help guide Bula. Everyone was for Daine Laurie till the stat's showed he wasn't bringing the ball back fast enough and we were loosing meters. I am still for Daine Laurie because a better coach would have picked up that he wasn't bringing the ball back fast enough and I would vastly prefer Laurie > Sullivan (I know Contriversial. Sullivan prove me wrong).

We really need an experienced back to get our position and backline defense sorted. Olam is my pick, but I could see Paps working nicely... except there is no way we can afford him.

You do realise that this phrase has been around for ages and you didn’t coin it?
You know when you hear something, but nobody reacts, even though it's blatantly weird or worthy of comment, and you question yourself?

Until you said something I was starting to doubt myself.
