Benji Marshall #70

I don't think 5 years is too long. If you think about it, if he signs a 1 million dollar deal with us for 5 years, it's similar to a 1.3 million dollar deal for 3 years which is what he'd ask. The thing he wants is a longer deal. Penrith aren't giving that to him unless he takes heaps unders below 700K I'm hearing. Pretty disrespectful offer in my opinion, and after what Ivan said in the media like the dick he is I'd want to leave too
I'm just more worried about the players we have coming thru is all. Onitoni Large will be ready to play week-to-week in the halves by 2027 I think, 2028 at the latest. Latu Fainu is arguably the best young half in the country. that's our pairing for the next 15 years if we invest in and build around them.

obviously Luai is an incredible player in his own right but succession planning is extremely important in this business and something we've failed at since our inception.

I'd be pretty confident there'd be some options in the deal to ensure that all parties have the ability to get out a few years down the track if need be. that said, the thought of Luai in black, white and gold is a pretty incredible thought.

I think there’s a big difference between a 5yr deal @ $1mill/season and a 3yr deal @$1.3mill/season.
This finals series and GF showed he isn’t critical to Penrith’s success. Ivan has called his bluff.

It's a double edged sword. He won't come unless we offer a long term deal but also we need him to teach some of the younger guys. I don't think Sezer is that guy (he only has experience in one grand final). He is best to stay at Penrith but wouldn't hate it if he came over

Exactly. Come at your own peril.

I had heard that he'd met Marshall at his house but was unsure on how legit it was. seems to be true given this is the third time I've heard it though. Simpkin seems to be the subject of a swap and given the fact that they really only have Kenny (Luke is Cup standard) it makes sense for both parties.

contract length is the sticking point, not money as we'd easily be able to afford him and have some still left over. five years is too long in my opinion. but like I've said all along, with a guy like Jarome Luai on the market you do the deal and worry about what comes next later.
Luai Signing may snowball abd attract other quality players like Best to come over too. He is a big get for our recruitment credibility if we can land him

Penrith won all but one of their games which was against Cowboys when Cleary missed almost 2 months of footy and that game all the origin players were out. Cleary being one of the best players ever doesn't make luai average. Extremely silly logic. Cleary and Luai are both great players. I think they are actually better without each other. Luai did what he did with Samoa without Cleary restricting his play, as did Cleary in the grand final without Yeo getting first receiver when Yeo got injured. Add in the fact none of the tries in the grand final were scored where luai was and he didn't miss a tackle with a dislocated shoulder and it's a bit weird to pin the score on him. Cleary missed a few tackles that led to Ezra Mam's tries in that grand final as well as kicking the ball dead just before Mam's first try. That last 17 minutes overshadows everything else

Yes. But he was playing for the 3peat team. Not Wests Tigers. Different head space.

That logic wouldn't make sense in this case. We've seen how good Penrith are without Cleary for a long stretch of games... but Luai plays 30 minutes on the bench and the team wins so now he's no longer a good player? The quality between Penrith and Tigers is enormous, but the team functioning and roles that certain positions plays barely changes for every team. Which is why Cogger and O'Sullivan slotted in fine when Cleary was out and penrith looked just as good. It's about playing to the strengths of players and systems. When you look at the Bulldogs, they bought a bunch of overrated individual players like Burton, Kikau, Mahoney and now Crichton if he plays fullback will be the exact same. It's not that they don't have great players, it's the style of players they have which is not contributing to success. At penrith, they have built a lot of balance, great forwards, complimentary halves, a reliable and safe fullback (who wouldn't be anywhere near as good at another team) and a great bench. We are starting to build in these areas and not overloading positions like the Bulldogs. Halves is a position you want to have competition in, and a position that is crucial to the team, so paying overs isn't that bad.

I'm with you.

Ok mrs Luai, don’t get your knickers caught up there.
Penrith got their shit together when he left the field in the GF.
He knew it too and looked to be sulking at full time.

I love Yeo, But I think how much his involvement Stifles the Panthers Halves...
Worked 3 years ago, But that was a few birthdays and a lot of Footy ago for him.

Him and Luai being off at the same time, And Cleary hitting the Powerband happened all at the same time...
So it's hard to blame or credit anyone...
But I think Yeo being off adds more to the Panthers than Luai off.
Was the same when they moved him to Prop and out of the way in Origin.

He touches the ball to much, and the games caught up with him a bit for mine...
Yeo is overrated I reckon.

Very basic and predictable game, he plays.

someone is upset at the truth it seems. You'll find penrith were actually winning for the whole first half and 5 minutes of the second half. Ezra Mam scored those tries when luai was off the field...
