Cricket Season Thread

I reckon they might have discussed it, and due to the field all being on the fence, a 4, or a 2 were hard to get but Smith was still getting them early in the over and then going for the single on ball four bcoz if he goes for the single on ball five they’ll bring the field up and you risk not getting a single at all and then Hazo is left facing 7 balls every 2 overs. If Hazo thinks he can get through an over from one of the bowlers no worries then sure that’s the tactic, but when both bowlers are just as likely to knock him over, and add in the field setting tactic’s WI employed, then Smith’s, or possibly Hazo’s, or possibly the team’s tactic of taking the single on ball four is sound. Hazo faces four balls every 2 overs leaving Smith facing 8. Not to mention you are getting the extra single per over to reduce to target.
Mistakes were made well before then.
When Marsh got out, it was up to Smith to take control of the run chase and let Carey anchor the other end.
He didn’t. He batted like it was no big deal and we weren’t in danger.

Everyone bar hazlewood can hold a bat and they’ll all be beating themselves up that they couldn’t partner smith to bring it home. Windies too good. That’s cricket.

Smith’s dig I guess deserves some praise, how many openers carry their bat.

In saying that his mentality is very similar to Steve Waugh when it comes to batting. His focus is on his own innings and has confidence in the tail to hold up an end. That is a very risky approach. Ben Stokes was in a similar situation the other day and he shielded the tail for a long time In India.

Anyway bottom line it was a great test and cricket was the winner

A lot of people here clearly neve rplayed high level cricket. When you are protecting the tail the biggest sin you can commit is leaving the tailender exposed for a whole over which means you NEVER leave it to the last ball. Ideally get the single on the second last but next best on the fourth. Never take the risk on the last beaus he wont survive a whole over. Giving Hazelwood two to face is pretty standard.

Yeah, but the way Joseph was bowling, skittling top order batsmen, Hazlewood didn’t stand a chance. He’d have been better off facing a full over from the other Joseph than 2 balls from Shamar.

Nope, they were both just as likely to knock Hazo over within 6 balls, and obviously the team, smith, and Hazo, felt the same way or they would have played it the other way. You only give the protected batsman a full over if he thinks he can handle one of the bowlers. There is two ways to do it, and the team, Hazo and Smith would have discussed it?

The plan should have been for Smith to play the hero role. Especially once Marsh departed. Carey could have settled in and if Smith holed out, Carey could have led the chase with the bowlers. In the end, our plans were substandard and our best batsman watched all 10 of his mates get out…mostly to the same bowler.
Langer said it multiple times…Whilst Smith is out there, Australia will win. He is the best problem solver in world cricket…blah blah blah….
I’m sure I also heard he has never hit a 4th innings century?
He failed yesterday, no two ways about it.

I couldn’t help but think the moment he bowled Hazlewood and took off “imagine if it was a no ball”. How in the hell would you have called back that celebration?

The team failed. I think Cummins made a mistake by sending them in but there you go.

I thought the Windies won the toss? A bit of arrogance there from the Aussie captain.
No you are right first time Windies won toss decided to bat and Cummings said he would have batted if we had won toss !
Bad toss to lose .We bowled in the hot sunny days and Windies bowled in overcast days

No, it was Marsh, Starc and Lyon who batted “like it was no big deal”, swinging for the fence every chance they got? Smith was the one holding the innings together, maybe had those 3, (especially Marsh), read the game better and were just a little more restrained then maybe we would have had a different result.
When it comes to Carey, he gave 5 balls, three of them he had to face up to finish the over, leaving Smith with the next over and on the last ball Smith hits the ball down the ground and Carey calls him through for 2, leaving Carey with the next over. Carey hits 2 off the first ball (Carey could have taken one but decided to take 2) and is bowled with a good one. Smith’s fault? I don’t think so. But anyway everyone who’s stamping the feet looking to blame someone should blame Joey the destroyer.

Yes of course but Smith was taking singles on ball one, and yes I have played cricket at a high level
