Benji sets the record straight ...

Benji Marshall has bristled at suggestions he does not work hard enough to be an NRL coach ahead of his first official match in charge.

Reports surfaced this week taking umbrage with Marshall’s different approach to coaching. Marshall made no apologies for prioritising his family time but took major offence to any rhetoric surrounding his commitment to the role and was “disappointed” it had occurred just days out from his first match.

“I don’t want to justify the way I do things,” Marshall said. “What I don’t like is when things are told that are not true.

“Ask anyone in the building, I’m in here at 5:45am training with the staff before the players get in. They see us doing the hard yards before they come. You don’t play 347 game if you have a poor work ethic.

“Coaching wise, I know I have a lot to learn. I know I have to work hard. I do my best. It’s annoying because it isn’t true [about work ethic].

“What’s a 24/7 coach? Who says I don’t (live and breathe coaching). I come into work early before the players, work as hard as we can to until we get what we need done, and then we go home.

“Because I prioritise my family between 5 and 8pm every night to find that work-life balance, it doesn’t mean I don’t care about my job or working hard.

“I don’t get it …. The bottom line is it’s not true.”

After a week one bye, Marshall will coach the Tigers for the first time against the Raiders on Saturday. Despite a decorated playing career, it will be the first time he has been a head coach at any level.

“I’m actually a little bit nervous now,” Marshall said. “It’s just a lot of unknowns. It’s our first real competition game. I know we played two trials, but it’s hard trying to prepare with the bye in round one.

“You’ve got to flog the players longer, and then freshen them up later. In our trials, our boys were very tired. We had to, we had to prepare for round one. I’m looking forward to seeing them fresh.”

One of Marshall’s first big selection calls was handing a debut to rising star Lachlan Galvin. Galvin will be one of the Tigers’ brightest prospects to debut since Luke Brooks. Brooks was ironically just one day older than Galvin when he played his first game.

Marshall said he became teary when Galvin and fellow rookie Solomona Faataape were handed their jersey’s at captain’s run on Friday morning.

“One thing I made clear with the squad at the start of pre-season was it doesn’t matter who you are or how old you are, if you earn the opportunity, you’ll get it,” Marshall said. “Lachie is one of those guys who just plays footy, he plays what he sees, he’s not overawed by situations. There’s no fear in what he does.

“He trains hard, he won every test in the pre-season, fitness wise, and as an 18-year-old kid, you want to see how they go defensively, and in the wrestle room he was outstanding as well.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him play. He’s a big kid, and he’s also a really good kid, that’s what we love about him the most.”

?? He’s the defensive coach ? The only person who needs a slap is him ….
Totally fair.

Morris needs to own defense and he lives/dies with the players performance.

Yet it is down to the players. What Benji/Morris control is which 17 of the 30 they put out onto the field.
That was Siebold's biggest flaw at Brisbane. A commentator said "at least pick players you are willing to loose with".

It's a trial game, but clearly people did not turn up. They don't turn up vs Raiders then they should get a nice seat in the stands.

I know how frustrated most of us on here are because of the negative years we have endured over the last decade...At least after this review we had there was some action taken, and that action needed to be taken or we were headed for the dump as a team and club..
We can at least now realise that times ahead will be difficult at times while the rough edges are smoothed out,the youth start to blossom and Benji makes a name for himself as a head NRL coach...Yes I know its easy to say negative stuff while trying to be positive and it can be a deadset gut buster following this team and club most of the time,HOWEVER,we can stay in our negative mindset and argue amongst ourselves that the players are crap,Benji is a failure, the club stinks and on and on it goes..
BUT in my honest opinion this new era we are about to embark on needs us to be supportive of the whole idea by giving it that CHANCE before we burn the place down..
As Wests Maggies and Balmain Tigers amalgamated to birth this great club, lets remember our 2 PARENT CLUBS ALSO ENDURED MUCH PAIN OVER THE YEARS...Hopefully we learn from the past and keep the future bright with minimum pain and mistakes...
Best of luck to our debutants, the whole team and Benji for tommorrow against the Raiders..
God bless them and you wonderful fans, supporters and members,,,

The collision is all about intent . If you need a 42 year old man to tell you to rip in ,then there’s bigger issues than that , to mention that’s complete buck passing and zero accountability.
The players didn’t get up for the game , and only have themselves to blame . Is there’s reasons? Sure ! But ultimately it’s about each player being accountable for thier individual performances .
I’m just glad that , the clocking off happened in a trial ! It gives the coaches the best chance of turning it around . Rather than the middle of the season .
It happens far too often that our entire team doesn’t show up.
I’m not sure exactly what they do before a game but it is rare that the whole team hits the ground ready to put in.

Been following the NFL free agency this week … so haven’t really had a lot of time to check in here ..

Things look like they are going well…lol…

They haven’t even lost a game yet!

So I proved your point with but it’s horse shit at the same time? 🤣

Jesting aside, IMO it’s unlikely Benji can achieve what other NRL coaches have without doing the 16hr days. The mega successful in life or business are efficient over the 16 hrs. The goal is to win the big one. Aim for the stars benji.
No one is efficient over 16 hours … there’s a million studies around it ! They're just suffering from complex OCD , that they convince themselves otherwise .
If you told that same people they only had 12 hrs to complete those tasks , not only would they do it , they would shit it in … the reason they’re there 16 hrs is because they value what they’re doing more than being somewhere else .
It’s like I said an antiquated , outdated way of viewing output .

Benji explained this in the presser … they flogged them so that they would redlining against the raiders not a trial .
Look I’m sick of arguing this . This afternoon will either prove you right or me right .
And I would say , unless you’re a masochist , that me being right would be the most desired outcome ; ie. it’s just a trial .

He also mentioned he didnt want them to just throw
it around willy nilly neither. I was arguing that it was
by design & we weren’t showing our hand in the SGI
trial thread but today is what matters, comp starts

What are you talking about?
What happens today doesn’t prove you right and me wrong or vice versa.
We will know sometime in May whether this new regime knows what it is doing.
Today, I’m looking for the team to be focused on a game plan and to make their tackles. Winning will be a bonus but make no mistake, this is only the beginning of the recovery.

Yep, compete, compete, compete. Don't think we'll
see a whole lot until later. Need 2 find our identity

Agree. We have a totally new halves, center, lock and bench combo. Our attack is going to take a while to gel/snap together. Effort & competing in every play sets the tone - we do that well other things follow.

Thanks for replying. I think we are talking about slightly different concepts so I apologize if I chimed in for no reason. I don’t disagree with you or the studies. To me the lines of work/personal life for an NRL coach is blurred. After some thought over the last few days, the 16 hrs is just an arbitrary number for me, waking hours dedicated to the lifestyle. I think im saying that its not the efficiency of doing the work tasks, it the efficiency of the individual squeezing the balance of sleeping, eating, exercise, family, training, travel, games travel, man management etc It is a 7 day a week role and I’m not saying he shouldn’t have down time. Is taking a late night call to sort out a mental health issue considered work? I’ve done this a number of times for my own staff for example. You just do it.

Leaders need to love their role and their personal life works in and around it. The balance will eb and flow…

What makes you think he would have taken it on? Career suicide
I think he wanted it didn’t he? Anyway we all said we’ll judge Benji after 6-8 games so let’s stick to that.
Shocking start but not totally unexpected, bye first round at least got us 2 points.
I’m very interested to see BMs reaction on Tuesday afternoon, stick or change ?

Very disappointed in Benji's press conference. Journo lead him into the hip drop on Toa and he said nothing. Cat. Stand up for what's right or we have no hope.

Some changes are obvious for next week. We need starting centres Naden, Olam. Sezer at halfback. Klemmer should be dropped for that performance if start Sam Fainu and Pole at prop. Papalli one more game or move him on he’s not trying. Has talent just going through the motions.
