Yes, plus there are ramifications for dropping form. The senior blokes at the club wont stand for it just as much as the coaching staff.
Here, they're told to try harder next week.
This is true. And one of the reasons Richo's "greater depth through all squads" comment is really important.
For all the doom & gloom, there are genuine short term reasons why we play guys that are not ready, or stick with underperforming guys. The current squad balance is out, and WILL BE until the juniors the club is investing in are ready (physically & mentally) to push for 1st grade selection instead of having it handed to them.
Not telling you anything you don't already know- but patience is required. The Luke Lualili'i/Jordan Miller/ Johannssen/ Latu Fainu/Galvin type selections in 1st grade are almost through necessity right now. Not dropping underperforming guys is because these young players ARE the replacement options. Until the squad is better balanced through experience, we will likely have this issue.
I don't blame Richo, Benji, Sheens etc for the current roster. It was a year & a bit ago the club put the "development club" line out there & they are trying to hold true to that. It can, and SHOULD, work.
This off season & next season is weeding out the guys that won't make the cut, blooding more up & coming players, and including new faces that increase squad depth. We are likely entering the more important year of squad development- figuring out which of young players isn't what they hoped they would be, and moving them on.
