Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Bird is NOT the word!!!
He’s not even starting for the dragqueens? That says it all for me.
This is a typical crap retirement signing we usually make. I was hoping we’d changed. Bird knows his days are numbered in the NRL, and we need the spots, I would be low balling him. Two years with a club option on the second.
He’d be an upgrade on Doobie or Naden.
I’d be hitting Flanno up for a swap, Doobie or Naden for him?
Hate on him and bag him all you like, but to say he is not even starting at the dragons is just a lie, he starts every week he is fit, he is starting five eighth this week, as he was last week

I fail to see how a 34 year old Frizell would be a better option than someone currently off contract such as Jack Williams ?
Williams is ideally a better 13 than he is on an edge, but even if he plays on an edge he’s a lot better quality than Frizell or Bateman at this stage of their careers.
Frizell is 32 at the moment, and no I don't think Williams is a better player as it stands right now, maybe in 2 years, who knows. Frizell whilst not my first choice is a proven enforcer, something everyone wants, someone who drives standards at training, something we really need, I can see some merit in it, much like Finucane did at Cronulla, lifted them back up to a top 4 team

Frizell would prefer to remain in Newcastle however I think he understands in order to play consistent football these next 2-3 years he’d probably have to go elsewhere with Lucas and Pearce-Paul’s rise.

Newcastle have made both him and Dane Gagai available due to salary cap restrictions as well.

Gagai looking likely to go to the Roosters.
I like Frizell, always have, but would’ve preferred to sign him 5 years ago not now. It’s like Klemmer and countless others we have signed over the years, great players in their day, but past their best when they land here. They might have a great work ethic, leadership qualities and try really hard every game, but if we’re not getting the best out of them then what’s the point. Especially so in Frizell’s case if he would prefer to stay with Newcastle.

I’m more talking about the players that the clubs put at the front of their shop window. We’ve jumped on them in the past. There are more desirable players behind them that the clubs aren’t making as much noise about but are still open to letting them move on.
Like I say, there's no trick to it: you have to find players who contribute more than they cost in salary cap. If a club is obviously desperate to offload a player (or, more accurately, a player's contract) it stands to reason that they're less likely to be a superstar. But maybe the desperation comes through in the club being prepared to carry enough freight to make the deal worthwhile.

I completely agree that just signing people willy nilly because they're available, famous and come at a discount to their existing contract is likely to be a bad idea. My point is that it's also wrong to rule anything out as a potential source of a useful, good value player. Even someone like Mbye would have been ok if he'd been taking up next to no cap room, for instance.

I haven’t look this week and I was going off what old mate posted previously.

Imagine right edge of Tyson Frizell and Jack Bird, it would be better than what we currently have defensively, but points would be very hard to come by as both have slowed down a lot and will only be slower by the time the 2025 season commences.
To worry opposing defences you need both edges to contain strike players with speed and tackle busting ability and the tricky part is having them same players good enough defensively to not leak too many points.
3 years ago having a right edge of Frizell and Bird would have been sensational, but unfortunately everyone gets old and slow.

Tyson Frizell vs Souths
20 run metres
4 runs
9 post contact metres
4 hit ups
76.19% tackle efficiency

Leo Thompson vs Souths
161 run metres
15 runs
73 post contact metres
12 hit ups
87.88% Tackle Efficiency

Let's be realistic here
One plays edge and one plays prop though. It's not like you're comparing like for like players

Fair point, but neither player seems to have dropped off a cliff & Frizell holds a lot of impact.

If the club doesn't unload Bateman- Frizell could still be added for a wide impact player, and Sam Fainu could step into the middle. Of all the options mentioned, he's probably the most damaging prop we could put on the field.

Not trying to discredit your mail but why would Newcastle recently re-sign Gagai for two more years just to tell him he's free to leave months later?

Unless Seyfarth really makes the right edge his own we will need somebody and even if Seyfarth does own it we will still need back up, so maybe he and Frizell in tandem 40 minutes each per game could work and Seyfarth is versatile enough to also play in the middle if required.
Everyone has an opinion, but I’d much prefer Jack Williams on our right edge in tandem with Seyfarth.
I’m basing this on the assumption that Bateman will not be back, I think the relationship between he and Benji has been fractured to a state of no return.

Only reason I can think is coz Newy's cap is shot and the situation hasn't been resolved and because they haven't been able to offload others they'd hoped they have resorted to allowing other higher earners leave instead as they are more likely to have suitors?

So used to overlooking Seyfarth & now all he does is play good & kinda pick himself

I believe we are not too far off being much more competitive next year. We need to be astute with our forward signings and get attitude and effort signings. Realistically, we could look something like the below and I think we would improve:

8. Pole
9. Api
10. Klemmer
11. Fainu
12. Frizell
13. K. Hetherington
14. L Fainu
15. Seyfarth
16. Twal
17. Johannssen

Didn't we sack the board that Muppet included that totally oversaw the totally F..king of this club why bring any of those peanuts back
Getting a bit off-track from Signings, but feel the need to reply to this here as our most viewed thread.

Unfortunately, we can't sack them and he, with 3 other numpties, took control of the HBG board when the other 3 directors pushed through the actions from the review.

If they push through the review and fix the structure of our board, then they are redeemed. But for everyone taking notice, I believe the 4 are
  • Julie Romero (Far Right)
  • Dennis Burgess (I think you can guess...)
  • Vince Tropiano (2nd from Right)
  • Stephen Montgomery (3rd Left)

If they do not do the right thing (and dennis's re-appointment into their WT board seat is one sign of that), we're going to be back to where we were.

We need to make sure these 4 people feel the pressure and know that it's our club and they are custodians, not owners.

We need talent on the board, not entitlement.

It depends if you pay them as the player they were or the player they are now.

I think Richo will pay them right and we could use Frizells leadership and ability, even the player he is today. Bird would work as a edge forward too.
