Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Look, reading the point... (i think)

We have to pay overs for some players.

It's better to get a player like Papalii, Thompson or Olakulatu and paid overs for them... As they are starters. What has killed our club is paying top freight for players that don't take the field.

We have had too many stars, (I dont' need to name them) who turned out to be fringe graders and did not play most games. Along with too many Fringe graders signed up for higher dollars.

Whoever we sign at 2RF... No "potential" signing. A bankable first grade starter, happy to pay 100K overs if it meant we get someone who would start in most teams.
We have too many fringe players like Bud and Stafford' and Brent'who get 1st grade $$ but don't deliver
And most of the juniors can't step up
Pay whatever is more than reasonable and buy genuine 1st graders like May and Bird and Tureva

Props are now the third highest paid position in the game after halfbacks and fullbacks. Tino, Haas, AFB, JFH and Taumalolo are all on 1mil+. Tapine, Paulo, RCG, Nelson, Flegler, Papalii and Collins ware all in that 800k+ bracket from when they signed their contracts. Thompson, Stefano, May, Barnett and Leniu seem to all be in that 650-800k bracket.

See plenty of comments about props not being worth more than a certain amount, but the reality is that they are worth whatever clubs are willing to pay them. At this point in time clubs seem willing to pay props good money. With all the analytics in the game, clubs understand the value of props and how big of an impact a good prop has on the outcome of the game. Sometimes, us fans need to recognise that the clubs (all clubs) know what players and positions are worth more than we do.

AFB is on a million per year we withdrew our offer because we didn't want to spend that much on a prop
Worked out well in the end.

Shame we are paying so much for Bateman and Sullivan, but we saved on May and Hunt plus we have a lot of players off contract next year which should free up more space to hit the market for 2-3 high quality recruits.

Who said it’s for 800k?
"The Raiders were told on Thursday that Thompson won’t be taking up their lucrative offer with Thompson instead opting to join Cameron Ciraldo at the Bulldogs. It is understood he has agreed to a four-year contract from 2026 worth about $825,000 a season. The Raiders offered the most money whilst the Knights offer was comparable to Canterbury’s."

This is from Michael Carayannis on the Daily Telegraph’s site.

$850 seems a lot for Thompson. Zero tackle has WTs most expensive props (T.May and Klemmer) at $650.
Pole, Hunt behind them, then Twal on $400. Seems well balanced.
Samuela on $500 seems unders

Notice the 1 mill plus elite props are big, powerful, and can play big minutes there's not a lot of them out there hence the big money on offer.

What about Sticky as a coach?

How he's existed down there for so long has me perplexed....
He seems to really garner a core of loyal supporters amongst his groups and they
seem to drive it for him.
He also gets a decent run on fox - They all love him....

But he flounders around down there and goes under the radar for the most part,
The most you hear from him is when he's ripping it up someone and looking to get his own that way..

Richo offered Stefano about that or more....
Thompson is a better prop for mine.

I'd also think Thompson at 850k, Is a better buy than Klemmer at 650k
Agree at the moment re: Stefano! At the moment, but stefano has more upside. Hence why the drizzle went for him.

Possible.....
Stefano also immediately available - Thompson still under contract.
Stefano having more upside is (very) Arguable....

Both the same age,
Stefano has 2 more seasons in the Top Grade
Leo played union growing up and made the Kiwis in his second year in top grade?

If I'm buying one for 4 years with the same money, As much as I rate Stefano - I'm buying Leo...
Don't think I'd be alone.
