Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Average footballer to be fair. Do not rate him at all.

He has made a career out of being a reserve grade footballer,There is nothing wrong with that and he has my respect for doing so but i don't believe he will ever become FG standard. You need players like him for depth but as you said that is all he is

Don't think it was rumour, more that he was a potential target for recruitment. He is under contract for a25.

Yeah - You won't find much common sense here at times...
Penrith bought our international starting Back Rower, And our response (here) to that is to
replace the bloke we lost with their 5-6th choice unproven rookie?
And some wonder how we keep coming last....

I was living over there in 02/03 and playing Rugby in the Missouri area competion. We started a new team Rugby Team, recruiting from scratch with a Kiwi (lock) a Pom (second Rower) one Septic (5/8) and myself (Hooker) as the only players we had as a base. We were able to recruit and took the side from a fist game 660- losss to win the final agaisnt the same team and then attend the US 3rd Division nationals. Rugby was then the fastest growing sport in the US, especially in the universities.

The reason wast the there are only school level competions up until the College Drafts. If you don't make the university NFL team that is the end of contact sport unless you are into Boxing/UFC. The standard was low but defintiely growing and the standard was growing.

There was a league competition there, from memory in California, NY and DC, but really park level stuff. There are also AFL and cricket competitions running over there. There is every chance that NRL could take off over there, but are were well behind both of the other codes. The trick is to tap into the university system and develo a national competition from there. The NRL started out behind but if the this Vegas junket gets some legs could propel them up the sporting ladder.
I think the main drawback in expanding the game anywhere is the application of the rules. Impossible for the uninitiated to follow.

Man if you don’t think there’s going to be a downturn in Galvins performances , then I don’t know what to tell you . I’m not saying it will be 6 weeks , a season , or like Tim smith or Mortimer junior a one year wonder … I’m not saying any of that , it’s just inevitable there will be a downturning performance , in which Galvin and the club will have to counter . I mean we saw it really , well the beginnings of it , at the end of last year .
Im not going to fanboy a 19 year old .hes a prodigy to be sure , and i hope he can lead us to glory , but there’s a reason nearly every player suffers from the dreaded “second year syndrome” . The best ones just only suffer from it for a few games , and move forward … the worst ones , well I just mentioned a couple .
It happens to everyone at some point, but i dont think its anything to worry about.
If he needs a break, bring in Latu for a few weeks... no big deal.

If they got Rogan there he would experience the toughest sport in the world and in my opinion he would fall in love with it. He was on a podcast and mentioned he thinks soccer of the toughest sport in the world hahahah.
If the NRL got a mention on his podcast it would be huge for the sport
If only rugby league was as popular as soccer, the world loves it, the right exposure and over time anything's possible but don't ask me how you get it there.

Rugby league is so much better than soccer in my opinion. I don’t get how it’s the most popular sport in the world league has everything toughness endurance talent skill and passion what more could you want?

Rugby 7s has a decent foothold in the states and seems to be growing. The big advantage 7s has is that its simple and fast, lending itself to the great athletes in the states who couldn't quite cut top level American football but can learn the game quickly. The global 7s circuit is very fun proposition for players, plus it is an Olympic sport.

League can't compete with 7s imo. I don't think that is the goal in the states anyway, the goal is raising as much revenue from gambling money as possible.

Highly dependent on what you grow up watching.

For example I still can't understand why Mexicans waste all their time watching aerial ping-pong, complete waste of athletic ability to punt a footy a million miles then squabble over the bounce like seagulls on a chip. Ridiculously scattershot, stop-start and fumbling sport.

Specifically for soccer it's fairly simple to me - there is a low bar to entry (any background or physical type), you can play it without getting hurt (as opposed to injured) and there's a certain elegance in only being able to use your feet. Indoctrinate a kid with that and they're set for life.

Personally I had to acclimatise to watching soccer over several years, because my typical response to the usual soccer diving and other hysterics was to yell out for someone to get bashed. I love in League that no matter what a player does, there's always the chance they'll get bashed up in revenge. But I was getting bored during League off-season so I started to force myself to watch Premier League, and you gradually get used to attractive elements of the game. Much less break-neck than League, more akin to the vibe of watching cricket.

Also true to my upbringing, I personally love the idea of advancing a football with your hands and being limited to backwards passing. It's always stuck in my head, the idea of two moving lines coming together and one side trying to punch through. In sport I reckon there's nothing more satisfying than being put into a hole or putting someone into a hole, that delicate play of passing contrasted against the brute force of defence. Kicking a soccer ball into a net just doesn't satisfy me in that way and never will. But for kids brought up on it, they feel the opposite, they don't want to put a shoulder into other kids, they want to dribble a ball around an opponent and strike it into the top bin.

Agree about NRL appeal I like both sports, like watching Socceroos/Matildas play and of course the world cup, matter of opinion respected but keep out of a debate with European fans you will be in for a long night lol.

League is the far superior game however, soccer has a few things that League doesnt:

The barreir to entry for Rugby League is far higher. You could be a fast/skillful little kid and not get a look in as some goliath pacific islander is hogging the limelight. In soccer, the fast and skilful are the standouts. Additionally, the cost to enter soccer is very low and there is ample opportunity as it is played everywhere. This means any kid can have a go at it.

There is far more ingrained tribalism in soccer. Personally I think its because its such a boring game where bugger all happens, that even the scoring of a solitary goal is epic for the crowd. I also think that as nothing really happens in soccer, the crowd tend to interact with each other far more, creating a brotherhood that lends itself to this tribalism.

If you take these two factors out, and Rugby League buries soccer where it lays because as you pointed out, ther is far more spectacle and entertainment within it.

The cost to enter soccer is low? Not from what I hear. My mates reckon soccer robs them blind of a crapload of cash
