For me league is the toughest sport in the world. Been a front rower playing 27 rounds of league plus finals. Not to mention every trainings session is brutal these days including wrestling sessions.
Seriously imagine what James Fisher Harris has put his body through over the past 4 years it’s nothing short of incredible.

That might be true, but at the end of the day, it’s a culture thing. It’s what you are raised on. For us, it’s RL. For Victorians, South Australians etc it’s AFL. Europeans it’s Soccer (Or Football). It’s why it would never make it in America. Or cricket for that matter. It’s impossible to penetrate the culture and make an impact. At best, it would be a novelty thing or niche game.

Clearly the Galvin's don't think he is being developed here properly.
We will only change this by putting the proper care and changing the culture a bit. Kow-Towing though to semi-proven talent will just give us spoiled brats.

Nigel Plum was the one that got me. He needed 3 hours of taping before he could take the field, due to pre-existing injuries. Penrith was cruel playing him like that.

Liam Fulton and a bunch of others, yea I feel for them. I really wish we went back 5 meters and not 10, it would at least help.
 
I think soccer is the best sport because of the simplicity of the rules, the openness in the way the game flows and the variety in the styles of play and players. In order to maintain possession you must have strategy and skill.

I love rugby league because of the tigers and it's historical significance to Sydney, harking back to a time when the city wasn't crap and overrun with AFL and basketball and UFC fans.

But rugby league has so many gimmicky and artificial rules, from the 10m to the 6 tackle set to 40/20s to added random fun of 6 agains and a plethora of others. None of those rules seem like a natural consequence of the game and most have been implemented to improve the spectacle. But to me that detracts a little from the purity of the sport and objectively I reckon soccer is a much better sport.

This reminds me of the bellend that would comment on every NRL YouTube video stating soccer is the superior sport lol.

I played soccer as a kid and still think league is a better game.

Poor kids can kick around a tin can or tennis ball, that is what is meant.

In regards to junior participation, the regular fees are normal, same as I experience with other kids sport, for insurance etc. The part I don't like about junior soccer is they continually tout for people to join the academy sides, which costs much more $$$ and you need to drive to Timbuktu all weekend for the matches, and as far as I can tell you don't get selected for rep sides if you aren't in the academies.

That academy part is more about the conversation of why Football Australia cannot convert very high junior participation into better quality international footballers, despite Australia being otherwise highly competitive in other international sports that have similarly significant funding and participation.

I tell all the soccer parents - if you play League and you are any good, you don't need to pay for an academy, the clubs will 100% find and fund you.

Yeah it's alot. That's why it's good to have depth. Playing the whole season is no good in the long run.

Think the season is too long. If there is eventually 20 teams
.play each team once for 19 games and then play tests
Cut it back 4-6 games. The last few rounds of every season are just going through the motion.

To be fair, the discussion wasn't about picking him up as a replacement for ICE/Bateman. The OP also questioned making a play at Penrith's No.5 second rower. The discussion was simply about a player that could become available in 2025 that may provide some depth in a postion we are shallow.

I’m not sure I agree with you there I know plenty of Aussies who are obsessed with NBA and NFL who didn’t grow up watching it. If rugby league can get American fans interested and watching I think they will fall in love with it. It will always be there 2nd 3rd or 4th sport to NFL but that doesn’t matter cause our season is in there off season.

It’s a different story over there. The US is an extremely insular country. Especially when it comes to sport. Nothing else in the world exists outside NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. They classify their SB championships as world champions. There is a reason the US is the hardest market in the world to crack. At best the game might pick up a cult following. It will never be mainstream.

with the amount of advantages our climate , and love of sport has given a relatively tiny population country , it’s absolutely ridiculous that soccer is such a joke in this country . Especially after the leg up of the 2006 World Cup .
There was a moment in time around 2008 , that the nrl was really looking over its shoulder at football and rugby.
The elitism of rugby and the way it basically mistreats anyone who’s not an old boy was always going to kill it off , but football , outside of the lack of spectacle at times , it really should be doing a lot better than it is .

You can see it that way..
But taking one of the very last Roster spots we have and giving it to a 'Depth' player,
Is effectively replacing Ice with him - We won't have spots to give elsewhere.

We don't depth in the Second Row, We need Quality - starters.
As it is - we have a whole of 1.
Most teams have Edges that could play Middle if reqd.
- We're full of middles who're barely holding their own there without having them embarrass
themselves on an Edge.

My previous post re Harrison Hassett was merely to point out that he may become available. This is what @Jolls was referring to. I agree that we need at least one more 100 plus NRL games second rower. I have previously been an advocate of pursuing Kobe Hetherington from the Broncos. The problem is that there doesn't seem any likelihood that something will fall from the trees in the not too distant future. To offer my viewpoint I wouldn't pursue Harrison Hassett either. We need better and his signature would only add to our number of young depth players such as Tumeth, Sukkar, Lauililli, and Matamua. Best to give guys like Seyfarth and the above an opportunity until a genuine seasoned second rower becomes available.
