Racing tips, talk etc

Hal, I sort of like that rule. Particularly if you have seen her (these days apprentices are almost always a she) ride before.

If she’s not scared of pushing through a gap and can rate a horse I’m happy.

Lots of examples. My favourites…Meech, Melham (Kah), O’Hara, Olsen, King, Cropp etc (when they were apprentices).

My favourite at the moment hasn’t even ridden in a race yet. She’s recently been inducted into the Vic apprenticeship program. She’s ridden in jump outs and trials.

I have very high hopes for her.

No, you are correct. Point I was making was does it have to be 3kg or could you proceed with say a 1.5kg apprentice ?
I found 1.5kg doesnt really work for the rule mate

when i was pricing fir the corporates back in the day I used to use the Don Scott method of 1.5kg equals 1 length for worming out weights and measures

I would generally aim to balance my book at around 110% for a Saturday metro meeting

I’ll research that JT. Has some positives I think, as long as it’s drawn a barrier.
sometimes thw bad barrier can get you the price mate, remember that Queensland class 6 form is pretty week and sometimes you get the nsw provincial and country horses going up there fir the prize money as better than racing at Coffs etc

Enlighten me AH? Hong Kong is one of the strictest racing jurisdictions in the world, but where there’s money…there’s trouble.
As a very keen and regular Hong Kong punter I used to think the place was riddled with corruption. However, with the world wide following that Hong Kong has, I don't think there is much skullduggery these days.
In addition, the jockey remuneration structure is very appealing so they’d have to think twice about doing anything stupid. And the days of Aussie jocks being set up, eg Darren Beadman, I think are over.
I certainly love to bet there, good value/ large pools and competitive racing. Only problem is Wednesday night racing doesn’t finish until around 2am but that’s about the only complaint I have.

lol, I get it.

A couple of interesting facts about HK racing.

They have no breeding industry so almost all of their 600+ horses are geldings and a few stallions. Very few fillies or mares..

Staff at the racing stables are not employed by the various trainers, they are employed by the Hong Kong Jockey club.

Horses are stabled in HUGE multi storey stables…owned by the Jockey Club.

I’d love to go there.

And the international jocks all live in the same apartment complex.
I’ve been to Happy Valley and Shatin probably a dozen times each, when I lived and worked in Asia. You can get into the Members stand with an international passport, last time I think I paid $100HKG which was about $20AUD.
Interesting betting over there, quinellas and place doubles ( duets) are hugely popular, along with place betting. Of course, win pools massive as well but rank and file punters favour the exotics. But not trifectas and first four, not liked by Hk punters.
The really big one is Triple Trio where you have to pick the trifecta in 3 designated races. If not won it jackpots and can get to some serious numbers.
And lastly, most of the profit made by the HK JC is channeled into various charities which is an interesting way to support those organisations.

JT,

Don Scott was one of my heroes and I agree with your kg x length. I’ve got every one of his books, even the really skinny first one. He wrote a play I’ve been unable to find 😡

Computers have caught up with his card system and although I’m not really a fan, race and sectional times have taken over.

Give me “The Legal Eagles” any day 👍

Unfortunately it all got too much for Don and ended his life, but his initial rationale was/is sound and still used by many as a base.
I too, have all his writings a lot of which can now be found in computerised form.
But tales of the early days of the Legal Eagles are part of racing folklore.
My first race meeting was the Sydney Cup of 1961 and have been going pretty much ever since. I attend the Melbourne races every Saturday, just as I did in Sydney.
Still enjoy that feeling of walking on course every week, I call it my “golf game” coz from 12-6 is MY time.

lol,

I think we may have conversed before Hal.

My first Sydney Easter Carnival would have been about 1971-72 ish.

Anyway, I’m glad I breathed some life into the racing thread.

Bed now. Got to get up in the morning and feed, groom, unrug, rug, water, help vets and farriers etc…36 mares, 18 foals, 20 yearlings…and about 6 miniatures.

Cheers and go tigers.

Do you lokes remember Eddie Birchley "the fireman" lol classic mad punter
Sure do.

And I grew up in Mudgee NSW and we were family friends of Peter Huxley 👀👀👀

Not many racing fans here 😢

I mentioned on the forum somewhere in about June last year that I had bought a filly who was bred on the stud I work on.

I fell in love with her and…shes a 2yo by Rich Enuff out of a mare called Tiger’s Girl (by Tiger Hill 😂👍).

She’s had a couple of short preps but is being picked up by the trainer tomorrow for her first serious one. Trainer likes her but they all say that.

Still unnamed. We put it to a vote and although I’m the majority shareholder I just went by the numbers, not weighted for ownership shareholding.

The vote was “Tiger Lili” which I haven’t tried to register yet, although there is another horse recently registered called Tiger Lily. That might cause a revote.

My choice was “Ninth Again”.
Good on you Mac
I’ve had shares in 4 horses and never forget the feeling (jumping around like kids) when you get a win.
Keep us updated on how your filly progresses and of course when it has its first run.

Yes, all bets cash, and huge, but only on short priced ( odds on) favourites. Used to turn up with a shopping bag full of cash.
Walked away from racing after getting burned - pardon the pun - and claiming that horses were being pulled up to stop him winning.
Passed away 2017 in Tweed Heads age 86.
