NBWT on Twitter tipping Peter Taateo will be upgraded to Top 30:..money must be a bit tight after the latest splurge of Madden

I like the look of Taateo and hope we do keep him for at least another season as he looks like a middle with a bit of aggression and hits top speed quickly when running the ball.
However IF he takes a top 30 spot it would mean we are virtually full in our forwards without making any improvements other than KPP.
Similarly we would only really have a couple of spots left for depth outside backs in which 2 spots will likely go to Izaak Tu’itupou and Krystian Mapapalangi.
Again not bad players, we will know much more about Tu’itupou’s value to us after this weekend, but aside from Taylan May and the hopeful progression of Makasini and Luke Laulilli, we will not have made much improvement to our backs either.
It seems the only way we can potentially make 1 or 2 more bigger name signings would be if we offload a combination of Bud Sullivan, Royce Hunt and Jack Bird without having to contribute much towards their contract.

Woods reckons he was in 68k in his final year at Manly and people were speculating loads more. You just never know unless they are a top line player where there is more info around.

Don't know about loads more. Was reported as an 80k development contract.

Javon supposedly making his senior debut in the Qld Cup this weekend.
I agree, he will get a top 30 deal with someone for 2026, whether that be us or with someone else.

Very slim chance that anyone offers the kid an NRL contract. There have been many kids who've done well at u19 origin, but it still takes time to get ready for playing men. He won't play first grade next year for anyone. So he shouldn't be in any top 30. A development player makes sense as he'll likely start next year in Flegg whenever he goes. All signs point to us currently

As you say our wage bill for halves is already looking extremely high.
I don’t mind Jock Madden as depth, but 350k seems like fairly expensive depth.

That's why the Broncos chipped in 100k. 250k for a backup half is good, and absolutely necessary. We have 3 halves with us currently for next season, hardly overkill..

That's why the Broncos chipped in 100k. 250k for a backup half is good, and absolutely necessary. We have 3 halves with us currently for next season, hardly overkill..

If we are paying him 250k that is more like a decent deal in our favour for a change.

Our Fullback is yet to be extended on in my opinion not worth the dollars being discussed. Was wondering what an alternate option would cost.

It's easy to say he's not worth '900'k. I can understand why, he's looked a bit languid at times this season, but he's a legit talent that's for sure.

I think framing the argument of "Is bula worth 900k' is a bit misleading. I think most decent NRL fullbacks will be on anywhere from 750 upwards... (As usual, probably more for us). I think we should be really thinking is Bula worth the extra couple of hundred grand a season beyond what we are going to need to stump up for a fullback anyway. I say yes.

Not sure if he’s a better fullback or has the same upside potential as Bula, but Will Kennedy may end up being squeezed out of Cronulla. He’s a good player. Not in the same class as Teddy, Edwards, Walsh, Ponga, etc. but more than a solid first grade fullback.

Agree, Kennedy would be a suitable replacement for Bula.
Also, an unpopular idea, but I’d love to see Staines get a handful of games at Fullback.

Nicely summed up...the bed wetters come out in force if we haven't signed an origin rep every 3 weeks.

I would suggest given Richo & his mode of operating Madden is getting whatever Souths is paying for Sullivan.

If Madden was on $350K at the Broncos I would say they are throwing in a $100K.

Unfortunately whatever Sullivan is on then I say Richo has convinced his good mate Blake Sulley for Souths to pay $250K for Sullivan.

Essentially we are even but overpaying for Sullivan...

This is just a suggestion as some have pointed out. 1. The Sullivan deal hasn't been announced & 2. Souths signed Jonah Glover from the Dragons. They already have Jaime Humphries & Cody Walker plus Lewis Dodd. You'd think Sullivan only gets a gig if Dodd can be moved on.

Similarly Souths are paying big overs for Dodd.

In the games I have watched, Taateo has demonstrated a consistent ability to be able to break the defensive line and make good yardage. He has been in the Raiders' system but is a Panthers' junior so I wonder if some of our ex-Panther players know him.

Great post, this thread has gone down the toilet. We have signed a decent back up half who could fill in at 7 on cheap $$$.

I somewhat agree. But before paying up I would look at what other options are available. It appears Campbell is one other option that I think is at least worth looking into. Now I doubt hed be much cheaper (for us) but he comes with a completely different skill set. Which skillset would better fit our desired play style?
