Jahream Bula #269

We havent played semi finals for 15 years and had 3 consecutive spoons, yet here you are talking us up like we are the penrith panthers on the rebuild.

Interesting that nrl 360 started their show tonight with highlights talking up Bula..
Well if you like players who run the ball at three quarter pace, rarely breaks a tackle, rarely makes a line break, has no idea how to turn a 3 on 3 into a try scoring opportunity and is clunky and premeditated when passing the ball, then he’s your man.

Now you are going a bit far …
Do yourself a favour and rate if he plays better than his fullback opponent between now and the end of the season and see what the tally is.
Absolutely no chance he gets the better of his opponent in 50% or more of our remaining games.

Not sure how you know all that when our halfback (well number 7…) dummies it to him 95% of the time.

You keep comparing him to this elite fullbacks that are in their own tier which just isn't fair. What's wrong with having a safe reliable fullback who is good under the high ball, has tackle breaking ability & is good at support play. Penrith have won multiple comps with Dylan Edwards at Fullback being exactly that. Let's look at Bulas stats so far this year compared to other FB's who would be on similar money.

Bula 2026: (With one less game)
2 tries
3 try assists
2 linebreaks
4 linebreak assists
175.3 average running metres
3.8 TB's per game.
1.5 errors per game.
0.3 missed tackles per game

Keano Kini 2026:
0 tries
1 try assist
2 linebreaks
4 linebreak assists
163.4 average running metres
3.8 TB's per game
2.8 errors per game
2 missed tackles per game

Kaeo Weekes 2026:
2 tries
3 try assists
2 linebreaks
4 linebreak assists
167.6 average running metres
5.8 TB's per game
0.6 errors per game
1.6 missed tackles per game

Clint Gutherson 2026:
1 try
0 try assists
1 linebreak
1 linebreak assist
158 average running metres
1.2 TB's per game
1.4 errors per game
1.8 missed tackles per game

Dylan Edwards 2026:
4 tries
3 try assists
3 linebreaks
4 linebreak assists
207.6 avergae running metres
3.8 TB's per game
1.2 errors per game
0.6 missed tackles per game

Looking at these stats Bula is outperforming other fullbacks attacking output on similar money while impressively even coming close to matching Dylan Edwards (who is playing on the best attacking team in the comp.) Despite the narrative that you're trying to portray it's clear that Bula is performing well & doing his job contributing to the teams attack. Tbh i'm glad I actually done this exercise I was weary of the Salary he was asking for but looking at these numbers I'd gladly pay him 800-900k a season.
For context, I think Bulas going well this season and I am in the camp that hopes he extends. Even if that extension iss 900k+

But that comparison is very skewed.
The 3 guys hes going better than are playing in terrible sides.
Weekes stats are actually pretty decent considering how spoiled the milk has been.
Kini is a good player but has looked well below his best to start the year, Titans are their usual selves.
Gutho is washed, he'll be playing park footy inside 2 years, Dragons are historically bad.

Edwards stats are stupid as usual and yes he benefits from the Penrith juggernaut, but you've also got guys like Faalogo, Jye Gray and even Fletcher Hunt who are mid level contracts at best and would be putting up similar output to Bula.

I think Bula brings more to the side than just stats, but I also think that there's still room for improvement in attack. He creates a lot of half chances but hes just not getting clean breaks, his stats could.be way higher if he finds a way to get loose more often.

Last time the tigers won a grand final we had a fullback who looked slow as a wet weak.

Bula is definitely my man. I hope we lock him down.

he has been better than his opponent the past two weeks …

Look …I don’t disagree with all you say … he needs to run the ball harder and get stronger …. He lacks physicality…

He is a good defender …safe under the high ball .,.. in attack he is a good support player …

He has realised you cannot give Bula early ball as he just shovels it to the player next to him like he’s playing pass the parcel and creates nothing for the players outside him.
I’ve never ever seen a fullback who is so unsure and premeditated with ball in hand.

Nah, he’s just a glory hog who rates himself too highly. When we have actual halves Bula will get more chances.

You haven’t answered my question… if Drinkwater isn’t available … who do you want to see at the club if Bula leaves?
Above anyone else, I'd try and get Farnworth to play 1. He and Hammer share roving duties in attack and im confident he could do a job defensively at the back.
Hes already supposed talking with the chooks so not out of the question.

You must have memory loss, the 2 fullbacks are not even comparable.
You are right.

Bula is being written off as 24 year old after spending 3 years playing behind the worst forward pack and halves in the comp.

Hodgson had the benefit of playing till the ripe age of 35 and at the same age as Bula was playing behind one of the best ever teams to never win a premiership (2001 eels side).

You keep making my points for me. Give me a challenge Vic.

Simply ask yourself the question, do you want to support a team with a very good forward pack who will get the better of their opposition more often than not, but still struggle to score points due to lack of quality in their 1-5, or do you want to support a team who has attacking strike within their 1-5 and can potentially win a premiership sometime soon because of it ?
