OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Putting this here because I heard an imbecile journalist describing there being a tax payment when a player returns to Australia. No true at all. Thats a UK things.

short version:

Luai sells his Aussie house, buys a house in PNG, moves wife and kids there, sets up local bank accounts, genuinely demonstrates he is living there permanently… he won’t pay income tax. If he then ‘changes his mind’ and decides to move back to Australia in 5 years, he still won’t pay income tax on money he brings back.

Long version:

If a player like Luai actually restructures his life around PNG (family relocates, no Australian home retained, under 183 days in Australia, genuine PNG abode), he could become a non-resident for Australian tax purposes. Then:

• Only Australian-sourced income remains taxable here (e.g., Australian investment income, rent).

• PNG-sourced salary and PNG-sourced image rights (third party deals) fall outside Australia’s tax net entirely.

• If dual-resident under domestic law of both countries, the DTA tie-breaker (permanent home, centre of vital interests, habitual abode, nationality, in that order) decides which country wins primary taxing rights.

Dont know if they are "off" him, however i have seen a bit of a shift in the dynamic and to be entirely honest even from the start he seemed to be a bit aloof from the rest of the team. He has a number of businesses he pursues outside of the WT so you very rarely see him in any of the pics the guys share when they are out with each other. On the field and in the media he is all in with the team, however outside of that i don't think he really socializes with them.
Ive seen the team post training sessions at a particular cafe atleast 5 times this year, never once seen Luai.. I also dont think ive seen twal either to be fair.

They wouldn’t be at WT in the first place.

Feels to me like Benji’s hand was forced in this.

Luai should of been our 6 next year with Latu & Javon competing for the 7.

Instead we’ll enter 2027 as wooden spoon favourites and a coach under enormous pressure.

I don’t think they will be in the spoon favourites… probably around 4th- 5th last

I thought it was to do with TPAs . Ie. because they’re PNG based companies they have no agreement with the Aus government, especially if they pay thier employees in us dollars or PNG currency .

We will have 2 very experienced halves in Doueihi and Jock Madden and 2 young emerging halves in Latu and Javon Andrews.
That tj me looks like a good balance and if we can recruit to ensure we have a bit more strength around them even if we have a few injuries, I can’t see how a combination of those 4 halves cannot get the job done.
AD and Madden. Great.

Hello darkness my old friend.

We’ve seen our forwards depth this year and who are our established NRL halves next year? I hope to be proven wrong.
We currently have 10 top 30 roster positions to fill.
If we do not fill most of them with players who can either be a regular part of our top 17 or be players that are good enough to apply plenty of pressure for positions within our top 17, then we will be deserved wooden soon favourites.
Who we fill our final 10 top 30 positions for 2027 will not be any big names, there are no big names left to sign, but it will determine if we are serious top 8 contenders or serious wooden spoon contenders.

With two new clubs scouting players it’s not a good time to be a buyer.

Tax law depends on the individual, and @Mccarry hit the nail on the head. It really comes down to a domiciliary test. I suspect the TPAs he earns this year will be taxed in Australia, as he still resides here. But after he moves to PNG, they will be taxed under PNG's system, which should be tax-free based on the agreement.

To do so, though, he would need to show intent to reside in PNG, which would likely mean selling his property, shipping his possessions, etc.

Luai, Lu-who? WARNING: This video may cause permanent damage to your eyes when you try following the sidestepping, try scoring whiz kid, Javon Andrews. What he does is freakish! And he kicks goals from the sideline to boot!

Classy. The way he holds the ball up reminds me of Benji. His combo in the few games he played with Latu was next level. And Galvin really thought he couldn't learn how to play in the halves from one of the best to ever do it 🙄

If every good player was benched because he committed to another club the following season a lot of good players would not be playing much footy.
It's a professional sport. Fans are emotive we don't make the best judgement in situations like this. It's been dealt with - every coach in the NRL with the squad we have currently available would pick him and so should Benji.
As long as we are in with a chance... at least mathematically, then definitely with you.

But I think when we won't be (shortly), we should start to experiment for 2027.

Why has no one come sniffing around for Javon Andrews if he is that good?

Usually when we have a player stuck behind 1-2 players with any talent, the media are all over it trying to get him a contract elsewhere.
