LIVE GAME Round 5 vs. Dolphins

Live Game Discussion
we were clearly very tired after a brutal encounter that was only five days ago. it reflected in some of the tries the Dolphins scored and had a little to do with our first half performance, but there can be no excuses for the way we played to begin the match. we set the tone in the first few sets and were lucky to be down only 14-0 at HT.

second half we showed plenty of fight and we can be proud of our efforts, but the Sutton call and lack of resolve afterwards killed us off. we’d probably do better with a couple extra days off, but unfortunately this is the state of the game. we have to be better in those situations.

I absolutely love Jahream Bula and admire his effort and raw talent but his ballplaying needs considerable work. he doesn’t square up, he rarely passes the ball and teams are beginning to snuff him out very quickly. he has a number of traits that can’t be taught, but he needs to be working overtime on creating gaps for the men outside him at training.

eight days before our next match against inferior opposition will lessen the blow of losing both Fainu’s and Bateman. its a squad game, whoever comes up has to do their job.

there’s certainly a team we can be proud of here, they’ve just got some work to do. roll on next week.
Agree we looked tired from a tough game against the Eels, but as you say it’s not acceptable at NRL level.

Anyone notice since Twal scored, he no longer has shots at the line. It was clearly on his mind.
I think we'll see him score a few more this year,. It looks like he's added some late footwork at the line to his hit ups it's proving to be positive.
Depends on how Benji wants to use him too I guess

I thought another bad call from the peanut ref tonite was not binning the tinned tuna that smashed Sam Fainu across the chops! Crucial time in the game, fainu got cat 1 out fir 11 days, he gets put in report. Another crap ref decision that affected the outcome. He gets binned we get 18th man activated earlier and don’t lose a interchange. Let alone they’re down a player for 10 snd don’t understand how he wasn’t binned, Fainu is not a small guy!!!

I wouldn't consider any of the teams we play as inferior. St George certainly match us in most areas and in our last meeting completely out muscled us. Our depth is already being tested and next week will be just as challenging.

My opinion, drop Tupou too slow no energy. Bring Naden on the wing. I've seen enough of Sullivan in defence, start Latu fainu who I thought was good in D, Simpkins or TDS on the bench. Other than that I thought it was good fight in the 2nd half, hate blaming the ref but that changed the momentum the call against Api . Galvin straight back into 5/8 in 2 weeks .
100%

We were our own worst enemy (along with the dreadful ref), but we showed plenty of spirit and fight in the second half, and its the first time in what, maybe a decade? that we actually look like a team that plays for each other and defends with heart.

The last few seasons we would have given up and been steamrolled in a game like that, but i feel we're turning a corner and getting some of that never say die attitude in our ranks!

Nothing to it.
He seemed to be telling him to get into position as there was still time to have a crack. First play after that, Bud fed it straight to Latu.
A lot of people shitting on Sullivan tonight. Unfairly for mine. He was very vocal, trying to lead the backs, trying to win it for us.

After the boring, lazy and at times gutless displays we have seen over the past 12 years, I find it odd that a guy having a real go is singled out so quickly.

Certainly had whipping boy vibes. Especially so when he was also quickly wrongly singled out in copping unwarranted blame for the early unsuccessful challenge.

Rewatched a few key talking points.
Those stating that Sullivan was protesting Apis decision to challenge were spot on. I can not see who else was in favour of the challenge but Sullivan clearly saying not to.

Several players missed their assignment leading to the Kaufusi line break. IMO the Most at fault was Pole who not only failed to move off the line but had the easiest/worst tackle attempt.
Then there was Twal with some appalingly lazy marker play (with fresh legs as well). For all the talk about his tackle efficiency his the laziest defender in our middle and this play highlights that.
Bateman copped the bulk of the criticism live for his poor attempted tackle. It was bad and should have been made but he was left with so much space to cover.
Finally Fainu failed to close the gap left by Pole and Twal but he holds the least blame having started on the other side of the ruck.

The non-call for markers not square was fair enough given Sutton's explanation. Twal ran through the ruck preventing the defenders from getting into position. Letter of the law it should have been a penalty to the Dolphins. The way different but similar scenarios are ruled it should have been time off reset before playing the ball as usually done when markers are taken out or play on as usually done when defenders are offside due to the actions of the attacking side.

Yes I agree but that can be worked on, the kid is having a go and marshalling the troops, not afraid to really get vocal.
FFS Brooks was a little church mouse in comparison.
I’m just saying, it’s round 5 and we are already writing off too many guys.
The team is playing with heart. For the time being, that will keep me interested.
Not all times I agree with your opinions Tucker which keeps this forum interesting
but I am with you on this one.
The team is playing with heart and keeping me interested as well 👍

I was at the game, the reffing went very one-sided once a few tigers players got into the ref. We missed out on a lot of clear six again calls through the second half and the non offside and knock on call on Api looked unexplainable live. We need to keep it professional so that doesn’t happen.

Sullivan tries hard but teams target him instantly once he is in a defensive line. His decision making on the lead is really poor and he’s out of the line a lot. I also think he hits the line sideways in attack and passes either to early or to late. Lots to work on for him but he did have energy and effort

I agree with your assessment of Sullivan. There is plenty of offensive talent there to work with but it needs a lot of work. Defensively he is probably currently the worst spot defender playing regular first grade.

There were a few times I was yelling 6 again at the TV that weren't paid so I agree that we were denied a few possible ones. Additionally I think the decision to send the clear Issako no try upstairs when we needed to get on with things was very poor (though consistent with how Sutton ref's every week). I however don't think it was 1 sided. There were a few calls I thought could have gone against us but didn't.

Mute the commentary and just watch Twal.

I’d like to see Bud have 3 or 4 games, partnered with the same 6, preferably with Galvin. He just hasn’t settled in yet, but I’m thinking he’s a 7 with all the skills except tackling.

Now that I've calmed down and watched it again, "throws up in my mouth" Sutton likely got that right. Twal was stupid. What is inescuseable was the dolphins flopping and holding down tigers players to get defensive advantage. Still proud of the boys to put in effort after a quick turnaround
