Used to be - in the dim dark ages of the 5 yard rule - that you could move off the mark as soon as the foot was on the ball - that is when the rules were clear an unambiguous. It was also a time where playing the ball was a contest between the man playing the ball and the marker and the ruck was defined as you say - the area between the back foot of both players. Not sure why the international rules don't define the ruck (they should) and the NRL has imposed the burden on the referees.
The game has definitley changed over the years. I was lucky enough to play under several of the rule changes - but the skill component of the game has definitely changed. In some ways modern players are much more skillful but in other areas they have lost the art of the game in favour of systems. I don't recall which game it was on the weekend that someone did a pass around the body of the defender and the commentators were flabbergasted. That was just a normal day at the office once.
Excellent point, nowhere is it seen more than in the halfback position. Theyve just become so robotic, as soon as a half does something like a chip and chase or just a play out of the ordinary its seen as amazing, but the halves in the 80s and 90s were doing those things all the time.
This is why I like where Benji is taking us so much. I know that it looks a littel chaotic at the moment but it is a controlled chaos. With time and exposure the skills will develop further - Twal and May need to watch a bit of Beetson in his prime - Twal off May up the middle would be dynamic.
If they maintain the trajectory and tidy up some of the headless chicken runs in the attacking red zone they will be the most entertaining team to watch by a long shot. Although I am in awe of the Panthers at the moment, almost like watching perfection on both sides of the ball.
Well Moses is the one that should definitely get dumped and be made an example of not just for round 6 but for at least 6 rounds after that disgusting disrespectful display of harrassment of the referee on Easter Monday.
