‘We’re putting our eggs into Api’s basket’: Benjidefends prioritising captain’s signature

I’ve presented many facts over the past few days including interviews from the off season and earlier this year that specifically contradicts the narrative that Tallyn doesn’t have the guts to displace Api.
It’s an absolute nonsense and isn’t true.
Talks cheap, if he had the confidence he could he would just stay and do it.

My preference is for them to both stay, but why dose Tallyn get a guarantee spot in 27 ?

If he is confident he will be number 1 buy then, sign the extension shit up and earn it .

He wasn’t saying this shit until recently.
Something else has triggered this.

I respect the clarity and directness around the decision to keep Api. I can see the sense behind it. It's a bold move but I think that's what we need.

We are always 'building for the future' at this club. This football program got kicked off in mid 2023, most people accept we have certainly improved, but the work should be coming to maturation soon ish. We are running out of time to be saying 'this needs more time'.

I think Api has more to offer in the next two and a half seasons than TDS would. Benji also needs someone he trusts to run the dressing room. Its a gutsy move, I can totally understand people seeing it differently too.

‘We’re putting our eggs into Api’s basket’: Benji defends prioritising captain’s signature

Benji Marshall has made no apologies for prioritising the signature of veteran ApiKoroisau ahead of 20-year-old Tallyn Da Silva and insisted he understood the young dummy half’s desire to leave the club to play regular first grade.

After meeting with the North Queensland Cowboys and Parramatta last weekend, DaSilva’s management met with Manly – who are tabling a three-year deal – on Wednesday, while Newcastle were preparing their sales pitch on Thursday.

Manly coach Anthony Seibold denies he asked Daly Cherry-Evans to stand down ascaptain as his time at the Sea Eagles nears an end.

Sources with knowledge of the situation not authorised to speak publicly said Da Silva’spreference was to join another Sydney club so he could stay close to family. There remains a slim chance Da Silva could strike a deal and exit the Tigers before Monday’sJune 30 transfer deadline.

Marshall on Thursday shot down suggestions the situation had caused a rift with CEO Shane Richardson, who was more keen on Da Silva – a local junior viewed by the club asa ten-year first-grader. Both Koroisau and Da Silva are signed until the end of 2026.

“Me and ‘Richo’ are on the same page,” Marshall said. “The plan from the beginning iswhat we’ve executed, and nothing has changed

“He’s a really good kid who has a bright future, and I understand the sentiment of, ‘Youneed to try and keep them all’, but at the same time we’re putting our eggs into Api’sbasket for the next few years.
Benji Marshall has defended the decision to prioritise the signing of Api Koroisau ahead of 20-year-oldTallyn Da Silva.

“He’s the guy to help us win more games. To be fair, he’s probably been our best playerthe past few years, and he’s got more left in the tank.

“I can understand Tallyn wanting to play more minutes and be in first grade, and not waitbehind him [Koroisau]. It’s hard to stop a guy in that instance. The difference is, heactually does want to be here. It’s not like he’s saying he wants out. He just wants to play first grade.

“Api is our captain as well. He plays 80 minutes each week, he puts in for the team, andhas a lot left to give. We’re prioritising that at the moment.”

Da Silva has been named in the No.14 jersey for Friday’s trip to Manly as the Tigers try toend a five-match losing streak. Da Silva was close friends with Lachlan Galvin, whorecently left the Tigers to join Canterbury.

Jarome Luai shifts to No.6, with Latu Fainu the new starting halfback. Marshall said Fainuplayed direct and square, which would allow Luai to play with more freedom.
“They’re both threats with the footy, they can both run, both have ball-playing ability, andboth can kick,” Marshall said.

Marshall also confirmed Taylan May would play half a game in reserve grade onSaturday, and was training well since being thrown a lifeline earlier this month.
May was sacked by Penrith last year and stood down by the NRL under their no-faultstand-down policy after being charged with assaulting his wife.
He pleaded not guilty tothe charges, which were later withdrawn
.
“I didn’t really know him before he came here, so all I can talk about is what he’s donesince he’s been here, and he’s been no problem whatsoever – he’s put his head down, and is working really hard,” Marshall said.

“There’s some private stuff he’s been working on himself, which is always a good signwithout us enforcing that.

“He’s a guy who really wants to turn his life around. He understands where he’s at, this isprobably one of his last shots if he doesn’t get it right, but all the signs are positive so far.”
Or, we’re feeding and retaining our best layer?

I’ll say again that none of us know today how this is going to turn out …

Fingers crossed the club gets it right …. Because I think it’s a critical call … if Api leads them to a couple of Top 8 finishes in 26 and 27 then at least that’s something to hold onto … it’s got to be the minimum

What if Api leads us to a third spoon this year?
It’s highly likely he’ll be required to go 80 every week as soon as Da Silva leaves.

It’s clear to me that Benji will be back next season even if they don’t win another game this year …so basically you may as well put a line through this year

27 times he has played the full 80 and we’ve only won 5 of them.
Now he’ll be here until the end of 2028 with no one really pushing him to share time?
It’s crazy stuff.

Classic Tucker.

22 games decided on the basis that Api was gassed. Damn.

You ever watched a game?
He can barely lift his legs at the end of those efforts.
Why do you think he is always at the top of missed tackle counts comp wide? Why do you think his discipline was so shit last year?

You think clubs will beating down his door for 27 and beyond? 🤨

It wouldn’t be the same interest as the contract would be for 27 onwards.

The problem is we need results in 26 and from all accounts Tallyn wants to be starting NOW..

Its still not clear if tigers plan on an early release or whether he sees out his contract till the end of 2026... hearing both at the moment

Tackle counts? Maybe because he plays hooker? Maybe stats need more context and conditions than just counting the numbers and saying most = worst / least = best. If Naden misses less tackles in a season than Api it doesn't make him a better defender. I didn't realise Liam Martin and Reed Mahoney were such hopeless players as well.

His discipline wasn't 'shit' last year. He got sent to the bin 3 times and two of those were an absolute joke. Like two of those sin bins were really really dubious calls. I think one against the roosters was even acknowledged as a mistake by the refs afterwards.

I don't wanna get too arkie about it, everyones free to see things how they see it. But if you're gonna go for the numbers on topics to prove a point....

I’m not just going numbers.
He was pretty shit last year, this year a lot better.
He is not an 80 minute player. He is best around 50-55 minutes.
After that he starts missing lots of tackles and his passing starts going wayward as well.
He is on the downhill slide and we should have got rid of him post 2026.

Decisive move by the Tigers. You don’t let your captain and a top player go for a rookie who hasn’t earnt the 600k. Api is the better player for the next 2-3 years and Haywood is rated higher than TDS at the same age.
Preferably he plays under Api until he’s ready and takes the position but he wants to play now. Only call we can make here is to keep Api.
