10th anniversary WTs maiden finals series

After watching what we did to the Cowboys in that first quarter final, I then had the strangest feeling of confidence for the rest of the series - it was like I just knew we would win the whole thing. I call it strange because it was not a feeling that I had ever experienced in all my years of supporting firstly Wests and then Wests Tigers.

I have never seen a team enjoy themselves on the field so much and I have never seen such amazing attacking flair displayed by _any_ team before or since. The footballing world called our comp win a fluke and in hindsight it probably was, but after 40 years of following the game of Rugby League at that time, I was just glad that I got to see the team that _I_ support, finally win a premiership

One other great memory of that semi final night was the fans and massive tiger chants that went up during the game and outside the ground afterwards. The P1 carpark with horns blasting and high fives and handshakes out of car windows between anyone wearing tigers gear. Great memories of an amazing time.

It's interesting to contemplate in light of 2005 happening, what would come afterwards with Benji, Sheens… how things can go so pear-shaped.

Is it wrong to be bugged by the fact that the coach in 2005 was coaching Canberra in 1989? :unamused:

Whilst I just can't even bear to look at clips of the '89 Grand Final, I'm not all that upset with Sheens for 2005\. It doesn't even cross my mind, so it might be wrong?, but everyone tends to see things a bit differently.

Ok guys, these are in ISO format, so you can mount them onto your computer if you have Virtual Clone or burn them onto a DVD. Click on the link and hit save file

Why should it bug you? I'd call it justice

Yep any part of the 89 GF is too difficult to watch. Last week Fox showed the 89 Tigers v Souths Semi final. That was much better viewing. Amazing how much RL has changed since then. The SFS surface that day would be considered unsafe for play in current times.

Yeah, I've never really thought that much thought about Sheens coaching Tigers to premiership in 05 and one against Balmain Tigers in 89.

I watched the Semi against the Dragons at the Balmain leagues Club. It was packed as the SFS was sold out. Old grannies were dancing on the tables that night.

I knew it was our year when the Cowboys beat Parra in the other prelim final.

Parramatta were somewhat of a bogey team for us, and I wasn't confident facing them in a GF.

But when the Cowboys got up, I just had this feeling that the planets had all aligned for us to take out the big one.

That sort of thing goes on at the pub down the road from my place. Nothing to do with Semi finals… its just a really classy establishment.

I would say it would have been the case of make your own rules at Balmain Leagues that night. I was in there on the Sunday, the day after the game and the place was still buzzing then.

Second week of the Semis v Broncos at SFS.

Beautiful Spring Sunday afternoon. I thought this was the best game of the finals series. It looked like Tigers were in trouble early when Broncos had all of the ball. But somehow they kept them scoreless in the first half. Always remember when Benji ran the length of the field. You could actually feel the entire eastern side of the SFS was actually shaking with people jumping up and down. Amazing team try to Fitzhenry on halftime and then a brilliant second half. Walked away from the stadium stunned to think the Tigers were one game away from the grand final.

I was just like a dream , you kept expecting to wake up and find out we were still running 12th

I wish every season was like that , Groundhog Day LOL

Now we aspire to 12th, how times have changed.

I haven't posted this story here before because it's pretty personal but it's so long ago now so what the hell…

During 2005 I got stuck pretty hard into the party drug scene. I was 18 at the time and used to swallow pills like they were candy. Not good. At any rate this lead me to having a pretty bad psychotic episode where I started to believe I was God. I went through a period where I somehow rationalized all these things happening because of me and what not and eventually I did some bad things and ended up in a mental hospital. The details don't need to be shared, I didn't kill anyone or harm anyone permanently but it was pretty bad.

During my stay the doctors told my dad to reintroduce me to things I used to like and was familiar with so he brought me loads of RLW and Big League magazines and I read them religiously while I was in there. I remember rekindling a love of RL that had been lost during this dark period of my life and watched the Sharks vs. Tigers game while I was in there. I thought at the time that I was actually controlling the players on the screen like a video game. Heavy stuff.

After the game I told my dad in no uncertain terms that we were going to win the premiership, which at that stage was a bit of a heavy call. I fully believed it, it wasn't like one of those fans being silly moments, I believed I was God so it was more of a foretelling of events than a prediction.

So then they kept winning, and kept winning, and my dad started to get kind of freaked out. I started to calm down and got on medication and eventually got better around the time the finals series started. I remember the Cowboys game I was with a bunch of friends at a party at the house of a girl I was trying to get in the pants of... but I was more interested in watching the game downstairs while her and a bunch of other girls were naked in a hot tub upstairs...

The Tiges went on to win the premiership, I watched the GF alone with my dad at his house and he was pretty shaken up by the fact that it all came true.

True story.

Amazing story, quite a slide…kudos to you for coming out the other side :righton:
How are you travelling now?

It took a while but you wouldn't know it now aside from me having no inhibitions. I'm good. Living with my partner and our 4 year old daughter in Brisbane, working full time in digital marketing for a well known real estate agency earning a decent crust and paying my taxes like a real boy.

One day I'll write a book about it.

Caught train down from Newcastle with a 12 strong group (containing 4 dragon fans) for a mates buck show weekend.
Massive afternoon at Randwick races. Only backed horses whose jockey had tiger or magpie colour silks. Got 3 winners out of the 8 or 9 races.

Got to sfs and too nervous to drink. Only had 1 beer all game. Most nervous I've ever been at a game.
When full time siren went, I was hugging strangers in Wests tigers , Balmain and Wests jerseys.
What a night.
For the record, buck was an eel supporter so he suffered the next day with cowboys giving them a touch up.
Wore a black shirt and orange tie to his wedding.
He wasn't happy!!!

Man this game makes me teary!

The crowd is AMAZING!

SOOOOO into the game and so loud its unbeleeeeevable!!!

Far out just my luck, been hanging for the longest time to record this game and I'm not home :rant.

This game is my favourite game i attended on so many levels.
I worked with a work colleague who was a Fanatatical Dragons supporter and ended up being one of my best mates, he gave it to me all week leading up to this game and challenged me to a $50.00 bet which by the end of that week i excepted it cause he was over confident.

I have never been as nervous going to a Wests Tigers game than this one, my whole crew went my Wife, Mum, Dad, Aunty, Uncle, Cousins, 15 of us.
Hours before we were at my place watching the Swans win it and the anticipation was building, I had mixed emotions from feeling sick to getting emotional over this game.
We had magical seats, on the corner up high with TV's, where Benji scored, the atmosphere? Never encountered a game like it, before kick off the Dragons supporters were all high and mighty, they were making plenty of noise, once the game started and we took control the Wests Tigers supporters were unbelievably loud and even though we were out numbered, we made more noise.

To share this game with the people that matter most was very emotional, at full-time I nearly bloody fell from the Tier for banging on the Sponsorship sign lol.
I was in heaven I knew then we were winning the Grand Final, the only thing I ever wanted was to experience a Grand Final win but i got a taste of it and I'm hooked…I want more.

The Broncos game the week before was also a brilliant atmosphere.
