#13 Lock

If Bird starts at lock, I’d like to see Sione Fainu (and/or Johannssen) on the bench to cover/share the lock role. Johannssen and Sione Fainu both have enough link playing attributes to their games.
If a half, centre or 2nd rower gets injured Bird could move to one of those positions during the game and Johannssen or Sione Fainu could go to lock.
There’s just one problem with ur plan , a lock has to have ball playing skills and game skills , young johannssen and sione don’t have that experience yet .
Just look at other locks yeo , radley and others have a lot of experience, it takes time , not saying they wont work but I doubt it

I'm amazed by all the lack of faith in Matamua in this forum. He is a forward young enough to still be playing Jersey Flegg last year - if he was just playing in flegg everyone would be raving about his potential. Their are not nrl forwards starring at his age they take time to develop - Suia Wong from the Roosters at the same age for example
I think the biggest problem most people have with Matamua is that he is about to start his 3rd season taking up a top 30 spot, not his fault and he would have been stupid not to accept the offer when it was handed to him.

As you have said, if he was playing lower grades on a development or lower tier contract then people on here would probably not have a problem if he had been given a few NRL games post round 10 over the last couple of seasons.

The biggest issue is that we are desperate for top 30 positions and he is one of a number of players that have not been performing well enough to currently justify holding down one of those positions.

Pretty sure he went back to Flegg - Was underwhelming there as well.
Reality is, He's in his 4th season this coming year - And had plenty of time?

You talk about it like it's a certainty for him to come on,
He's been well lapped by Players that have come along behind him and was over weight last year.
He might have all the talent in the world,
But the above suggest maybe he's missing the more important attributes.
He could be Bradley Clyde, Or he Could be Dallas Graham or JJ Felise.

Interesting you make the comparison to Wong, Go watch a game of Ressies
- You'll know where Wong is on the park, Matamua - Not so much....

Picking up the LOCK discussion...

Yea we are missing a good ballplaying Lock.

I don't think the answer should be May, don't change what works and we need him at Prop. Seyfarth/Samuela are needed at 2RF.

But... Looking at the market we can get someone.

Luke Garner. Not for lock, I don't think he has what it takes.
But Luke could slip in at 2RF. This would free up Samuela, we train him into our spine and combine him with his brother.

Agree we have too many underwhelming players taking up a top 30 spot…is that because we can’t attract any decent players?

Personally I think garner best spot in first grade is as center. Not good enough in the tough games at backrow imo
