2014 BENCH

So explain why we it took us 5 seasons to make the finals again with all the youth and skill we had in the squad

I understand the game changed , but that was the problem , we failed to change with the game

You are kidding yourself if you think that winning a grand final is bad for a team!

The reason we couldnt make the finals is because other teams played better than us, its not like our team just gave up because they had already won the year before.

And i must admit i find it interesting that barely anyone has Koro in the side.

Surely a kid as dynamic as him has to get a guernsey??

I agree but where. To me it is a decision between Koro and Richards.

Actually think it is a choice between Nofoaluma and Koroibete because I'm guessing that Patty will be first choice goal kicker

I will never accuse the boys of giving up , but because of our success in 2005 we refused to change with a game that had become completely different from 2005

People think that I'm blaming the side . I'm not , the club didn't recruit the right people to meet the demands of the game and we struggled to match the bigger stronger teams and many times we were simply out matched and out muscled

I dont see how us dropping a semi and missing out on our maiden premiership wouldve made any difference in the way the game changed and was policed over the ensuing seasons

I really like the way koro plays however he has a high errors count and I would rather him make those errors in state cup, learn from them then come back to NRL.

Nofo is way too far ahead of koro at NRL level.

Right centre is the contentious spot. Leulia, Simons and Lawrence are all left centres.

It would of forced us to change with the game , it took us 5 sesons to start trying to grind games out against oppositions which is what all the successful clubs did and when we finally learnt that we were damn near close to winning premierships in 2010 and to a lesser extent 2011

We just tried to outscore teams 38-36 and as results show it wasn't real successful , but it worked in 2005 so we just kept trying to repeat those glory days

The only downside of winning a premiership was that our management over valued and overpaid a fair few of the 2005 crop. This subsequently hamstrung our recruitment.

This coupled with injuries and a coach who seemed unable to adapt to the rule changes (that changed the way a team needed to be constructed) after 2005 led us down a lean path.

What the 2010/11 seasons proved was that when you didn't have to rely on Marshall as a halfback he was more explosive etc.

Anyway that is all history at this stage.

As far as 2014 I would imagine for the first few games at least there will be a utility on the back on the bench to cover the halves and fullback. After that one would hope with game time under their belts Halatau & Fulton would cover all utility options needed after that point

Dont see it myself.
We had ample time to adjust and didnt, regardless of winning the comp or being one game off.
It made sfa difference

I think it was more the case that other teams worked out our style of play after 2005 thereby negating our main weapon..

I think everyone has had a fair point regarding our form after 2005.

Main points I see were:
1) Injuries
2) No halfback
3) The move away from fast play the balls to more hold down and wrestle in the ruck

I think the point that the coach did not change the roster to coincide with the times is a fair critique.

The play went away from mobile forwards to larger sized players that could bend the line and draw in defenders…..the rest is history.

I hope Paterson and Keith L both make the starting squad. With Simona injured it is possible...

1\. Tedesco
2\. Richards - Goal Kicker
3\. Nofoaluma
4\. Simona
5\. Koroibete

6\. Sironen
7\. Brooks

8\. Blair - extra 5-10kgs
9\. Farah (C)
10\. Galloway
11\. BMM
12\. Taupau
13 .Woods

14\. Fulton
15\. Ava
16\. Sue
17 Patterson or Halatau

No Lawrence, Moltzen, or Anasta notably.

Woods at Lock is an eyebrow raiser - Why not Blair at Lock instead? Still keep him playing a prop-esque role in defense, and I think its win win

Geez, Lawrences stock has dropped.

Bench…...BMM,SIrro,Ava,Tapau.

That leaves Nofo out. I also think that Richards is predominantly a left winger as is Koro.

I know this is a hot topic, and for once we have a selection dilemma.

I know some of these decisions will not be popular with some, but are in my opinion our best team moving forward.

1- teddy
2-nofo
3-Richards/Lawrence
4-Simona
5-koro
6-Austin/anasta
7- brooks
8-woods
9-Farrah
10-Galloway
11-Siro
12-Patterson
13-sue

14-Fulton
15- halatau
16- taupau
17- Ava
18-bmm
19- Blair

I know I have doubled up with players in the team, I believe it is that close that there will be some real selection issues.

I have Fulton on the bench and know this will rub some people the wrong way. I still expect Liam to have a major role, but prefer to start with a larger team, and bring on the skillful defender and attacker when the other team is slightly tired. I do see him and halatau having similar roles as the are not large forwards, but workers.

Having a bench of Blair, taupau and Ava and bmm. Has size which ever way you look at it.

Picking 17 from the 19 I named. I would be happy with any direction that suits the teams needs. For example, against a skillful team, it maybe best to have two mobile forwards on the bench. Halatau and Fulton.

But against a large team, 3 big boys on the bench maybe needed.

The future is bright.

Now that our top squad is in order, I think our top 17 (notwithstanding injuries which will keep some players out at the start of the season), I'll roll with this squad:

1\. Tedesco
2\. Nofoaluma
3\. Simona
4\. Lawrence
5\. Koroibete
6\. Austin
7\. Brooks (goalkicker)
8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. BMM
12\. Sirro
13\. Blair

14\. Sue
15\. Taupau
16\. Patterson
17\. Fulton
18\. Seumanufagai

IMHO, we need size and aggression,

1- Tedesco
2- Richards (goal kicks)
3- Nofoaluma
4-Simona
5- Koroibete
6- Austin
7- Brooks
8-Woods
9-Farrah
10-Galloway
11-Taupau
12-Sironen
13-Sue

14-Fulton/Halatau
15- Seumanufagai
16- BMM
17- Brown
18- Patterson
