2019 Coaching saga -Thread

Penrith are now sitting pretty. They sacked Griffen late in the season, installed a lame duck dummy coach for a couple of weeks and now have the coach they and their star player wanted. Ivan Cleary has struck the jackpot with a possible large redundancy payment and a long term very well paid coaching tenure.

Meanwhile Wests Tigers are at six and sevens looking urgently for a coach for 2019 and there is a likelihood that they will have to settle for an unproven rookie as the first grade coach.

NRL is a cruel game for clubs like Wests Tigers.

Thats a reality we all have to start coming to terms with.

There’s zero evidence to suggest we’d be paying him any kind of redundancy.

Quite the opposite. WT have just upgraded their coach and likely roster much faster than they otherwise would have.

Penrith overpaid a coach and his son to a huge tune as they feared they would get together at the Tigers.

I’m not a fortune teller but Penrith just made a monumental mistake. WT are massive winners out of this fiasco.

You can hammer me later if I’m wrong but I’m very reliably informed both Maguire 2019 and Bennett 2020 have verballly agreed to terms with the Tigers. It’s the clubs choice what suits them. Cleary is gone.

We should sign Bennett for 2020, let him appoint our interim coach for 2019, one of his assistants…..Bennett will bring more players to the club than Madge....

Penrith did screw themselves over right before finals, hobbling any chance they had this year. Imagine coming fourth and self-sabotaging a few weeks before the semis. They may not even make it that close next year, with the Great Ivan.

You're entitled to your view of course but I can't agree. I'll be totally flummoxed if there's any payout to Cleary if he gets early release. Yes we've had to look for a coach but, if we have a choice between Madge and Bennett, we've improved our coach by quite a margin over Cleary. So I don't think we'll lose at all financially and we'll end up with a better coach. That's a win for us.

TYGA could you please inform us of what the hell is going on or anyone because us tigers fans are fed up with whats been happening to our club and its getting really frustrating. If u do have anymore info could u let us know cos us fans are clueless as to whats going on because the club doent wants to inform its members of anything that's going on. Thanks and sorry if that came across as harsh. :sign:

I’ve been told Cleary will be gone this week and a new coach announced. Mate of mine is a player manager and a very good one requested the club to clear its position last week. They are after Wayne. I think they will settle with Madge but it’s just a guess.

He told me Teddy and Woods signed with the Dogs ages ago and I posted it some people thought I was bonkers but it came out to be true at the time but things change.

Cheers mate, but there are still some who beleive this is all a beat up, and Ivan will be here next year

I’ve long been a Cleary fan and if this scenario didn’t play out would have liked him to stay long term. It’s simply untenable under any circumstances. He has gone behind the board, CEO and GMs back. Trust is broken blind Freddy could see he has to be moved on.

I was a Cleary fan too, but I can see he can not coach here in 2019 under any cicumstances, so we need a coach for 2019, so we tell Bennett to come in 2019 or we sign Maguire who will, who knows what could happen next year if bennett stays at the Bronco's, we need a coach now.

Like many, I was a big fan of Ivan until this whole mess started to pan out. I even gave him the benefit of the doubt for a while there, but now I feel that the only way forward for us is to cut ties asap, I don't think we can go another season with Ivan. If that means that Bennett can't start as coach in 2019, then let's just get Maguire and get on with it.

I watched the after match press conference (Kangaroos vs Kiwis test) and listened to Maguire talk about the team spirit, importance of family, desire and culture that the Kiwis are developing as a group, and I started thinking that maybe he'd be good for us. I think he could certainly take the bus over from here and I believe he could well be the guy we need.

Fingers crossed the club can sort this out in the next few weeks!

Seems an odd move my Maguire unless he has the Broncos gig lined up for 2020.

So we help the Broncos by ensuring Maguire is signed for 2019\. I can see some player trading happening of that is the case.

I believe what he meant is that Maguire can start in 2019 but Bennett can only start in 2020\. So we have to decide to take Maguire now or wait for Wayno.

Was mentioned in an earlier post that West’s Ashfield favoured Madge

I'm all for signing Bennett for 2019 and hope it happens but if we were only able to get him in 2020 isn't that the same as the riff signing Cleary for 2021 when he is off contract…

Just asking...

That's what I said also, but apparently that's called playing the man

Yes and no, the riff won't have a coach who is looking at a new clubs goings for the following year like Cleary would if he stayed, Ciraldo will still be there even after Ivan gets there.

Agree

Hopefully the pressure to perform is too much

Na, it's very different Geo. Wayne's club is happy for him to go elsewhere, as he isn't steering a re-build, whereas Ivan sold a dream and is then jumping ship just as it is starting, dogging the club, players and fans.

Cleary is signing 'after' his contract, to act as leverage to break his contract early, trying to force them. We are (maybe) looking at signing Bennett for a year out, maybe asking if he can come early but not trying to force them into releasing him.

If you insist on not quoting me and just having little pot shots ill come straight out ask you directly.

Is it in our best interest for Wayne Bennett to honour his contract to the Broncos for next year?

No BS just simple answer please

You already know the answer.

As for the pot shots, ive had enough. Man up and quote me or put me on your block list. If not ill be reporting every single one of them to the mods until they do something about you.

If all Penrith did was to sign Cleary from 2021 then they did nothing wrong but I don't believe that for one moment. We may never know definitively but I'm of the belief that Penrith sounded out Cleary to come across as early as 2019 and when WT refused to buckle they went to plan B which was Cleary from 2021\. All the while they knew that plan A was still a distinct possibility. There's a huge difference between the way WT acted and the way Penrith did.

Bennett for me either 2020 or preferably 2019.
But suppose I can also live with Maguire.
Just get it done to stop this never ending story ….. please.
Oh and yes, like most, I was a fan of Cleary and what he brought to the club but very disappointed how he played this out.
In the end bad karma catches up with people and he will ultimately regret what he has done. Burt down his reputation for what? To coach his son and work for a man who sacked him. Really? WOW! Unbelievable!

If Ivan the gutless flog does indeed coach Penrith next year here's hoping the NRL schedule WT vs Penrith on a Sunday at Leichhardt. Lock the doors to the opposition coaches box so that Ivan has to sit on the sideline. I'm sure he would get a beaut reception.
