I doubt that Penrith paid out Cleary's contract with us in full.

I don't think that's what's being suggested, just that they are making a contribution (of say $200K-$250K/year) for the remaining years of his contract (2019 and 2020).

I find that pretty appalling.
Panthers want Cleary but yet do not want to pay him his full worth for the season.
Yet we are stuck paying part of his contract for the next 2 years.
I couldn’t care less about compensation as I thought we were Buckley’s to recieve anything extra but not even to get the contract bought out.
Ivan would be weeding and mowing Concord Oval this coming year if I was in charge!

No that's not what I meant and not what will happen. We will not pay Cleary a cent under any circumstances. Penrith will likely pay compensation of $200K-$250K/year to us for the last 2 years of Cleary's contract.

There is no buying out of the contract. The contract is between Cleary and the Tigers. What needs to be negotiated is the terms of the release. He will sign an entirely new contract with Penrith. If they're paying the Tigers compensation over the first 2 years of his contract it's probably not going to be as high a salary as it might have been for Cleary over those years. So to use the media figures if he's to be signed for 5 years at $5 million it will probably come down to $750K, $750K, $1 million, $1 million, $1 million of actual salary over the 5 years. He's still making more for the first 2 years than he would have been an the Tigers but not as much as in the later years because the club is having to stump up cash for their mutual treachery.

We will pay Madge what Cleary was being paid for the next 2 years. That means 500k p.a. Madge’s contract is $833k p.a. We would pay 500k years 1&2 with Penrith paying 333k p.a. Or 666k over two years. We pay full freight in year 3 833k.

Penrith chairman David O’Neill has broken his silence on Ivan Cleary, declaring: “If Wests Tigers let him go, we’re happy to take him.”

The Tigers on Friday finalised a release that will allow Cleary to walk away from the final two years of his contract to return to the foot of the mountains. That move will allow the Tigers to trumpet the signing of Michael Maguire on a three-year, $2.5 million contract that allows him to begin work as soon as his finishes his commitments with the New Zealand national side.

A formal announcement is expected on Saturday.

It will signal the final piece of the coaching puzzle, with the only remaining issue to be resolved when the Anthony Seibold-Wayne Bennett swap will come into effect. While their respective deals with Brisbane and Souths doesn’t begin until 2020, there remains a chance the switch could be fastracked to begin with immediate effect.

Cleary already had an in-principle agreement to coach the Panthers from 2021 to 2023, but that is now likely to become a five-year deal that begins immediately. It completes a mammoth $10 million deal to reunite Cleary with his son, NSW halfback Nathan, in Sydney’s west.

The situation had become untenable for the Tigers, but the joint-venture outfit was mindful of not announcing Maguire’s arrival until Cleary’s release is finalised for fear of breaching its contractual obligations to the Penrith-bound coach.

The Panthers have been tight-lipped about their interest in Cleary, but O’Neill - the man who brokered the coach’s return to the club that sacked him just three years ago - said a comeback would be timely.

“If Wests Tigers let him go, we’re happy to take him,” O’Neill told Fairfax Media. “If Ivan became a free agent, we’d be the first to welcome him to our organisation. If Ivan was released, I’m sure I’d be the first person to have a phone call and have a coffee with him.”

It was over a coffee that O’Neill convinced Cleary that a return to the club could work. The Panthers were desperate to retain Nathan before he came onto the open market, knowing the Tigers were cashed up and ready to make a play. The best chance of doing so was snaring his father in a deal that forced the Tigers’ hand. The result will be a Cleary family reunion at Penrith for at least the next five years.

It results in caretaker coach Cameron Ciraldo slotting back into an assistant role, where he will complete the remainder of his apprenticeship under Cleary.

It had been hoped Cleary’s release could be completed as soon as Friday night as the parties closed in on an agreement. Both clubs were keen to have the matter finalised before November 1 to ensure a disruption-free start to preseason.

The round-four clash between the clubs at Panthers Stadium shapes as one of the grudge matches of the season. The Friday night blockbuster on April 5 will be the first time Cleary takes on the Tigers since getting off the bus. Cleary won’t face the Tigers faithful until round nine when ANZ Stadium hosts the return clash.

The Tigers had hoped that Penrith would financially compensate them in return for letting Cleary go early. However, it appears unlikely that money will be changing hands, with all parties keen to resolve the matter to give the clubs and their fans some certainty for 2019.

I don't know if you ever understood in this thread that the point some people were making was not that there wasn't coaching changes on the horizon, rather that there isn't much point getting up in arms about it until something official was stated.

That's technically still true, although multiple media sources giving the same news 99% of the time means it's legitimate. That occurred for the first time just this afternoon.

I didn’t think we needed people’s permisison to “get up in arms” over the obvious situation that was unfolding. Thank you though for clarifying that for me. So today the speculation is legitimate , but previously when almost every organisation was running with Cleary wants out, madge or Bennett coming here, Seibold to souths…etc.. it was a problem for some. Makes alot of sense, thanks again for explaining when it’s okay to believe the speculation and when it isn’t.

I don't know if "not getting it" is your profession, you are that good at it.

I didn't say permission, you don't need my permission to do anything, I said it's pointless. I believe it's pointless getting too excited about all the different theories, and let's be honest there's been one thousand different claims about this topic in the last 3 months. When there's so much misinformation, you are better off waiting for something official.

However when 99% of the media outlets align and EVERY journo is saying Tigers-Madge-Penrith-Cleary deal is almost done Thurs-Fri-Sat, then you can start to consider that it is likely to be true. Not official, but probable.

Same thing happened with Nathan Cleary's signature, there was all this crap, then NRL.com, SMH, Telecrap all started running the same story that a deal had been done - at that time you can assume the consensus means it has indeed been done.

You on the other hand not so much I think. 99% of the media reported Ivan Cleary meeting with Penrith. 99% of the media reported Cleary asking for a release. 99% of the media reported Cleary signing with Penrith from 2021\. 99% of the media reported we were in talks with Madge/Bennett. It’s been a consistent story the media has been running with since day one. A few on here ran with it by using common sense. You now want to jump on board so good for you. But this has been the story since day dot, not sure what different theories you were talking about , but if it makes you feel better then fantastic.

If we don't get compo then we should have negotiated harder. It's as much about sending a message that we can't just be raided at the leisure of cashed up clubs that take a liking to our coach as it is about the finances. We need to push for both cash and a public acknowledgment that compensation was paid (without the amount needing to be made public).

Both outlets are consistent with saying they expect an announcement tomorrow.

Well done to Tigers management for managing an extremely difficult situation.

Cleary did the dirty on us, but we made sure our 2019 season wasn’t ruined by moving fast on Bennett and Maguire.

In the end, Madge got the job and he is a solid performer with good pedigree. Fingers crossed he can pick up where we left off and continue the rebuild.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the Tigers.

On the other hand, reports were that Adam Reynolds was stifled under Madge’s very strict game plans. Time will tell, but could spell the end of the Luke Brooks resurrection.
