Wayne Bennett said he strongly considered a switch to the Wests Tigers before settling on South Sydney and also moved to reassure Broncos fans he would not be raiding Brisbane's roster to beef up the Rabbitohs' squad.

But he refused to rule out the prospect of players at Brisbane following him to South Sydney in 2020 after it was announced on Thursday he had signed a three-year contract with the Rabbitohs.

Bennett has a long history of bringing players to clubs when he has moved from Brisbane to St George Illawarra and Newcastle and back to the Broncos, most notably Darius Boyd.

Star trio Tevita Pangai jnr, Corey Oates and Matthew Lodge are yet to re-sign with the Broncos for 2019.

"I won't be looking to do that, no, but again you've got to understand the ramifications," Bennett said in Hull on Friday before England's final training session before Saturday's first Test against New Zealand.

"There's a number of players at the Broncos that specifically come to play because I'm the coach. And I'm not going to be the coach after '19\. They're all big boys and have grown up, they'll have to make their own decisions with what they want to do."

Boyd has followed Bennett his entire career but his mentor expects the fullback to finish his career in Queensland. He joined Bennett at the Dragons in 2009, before moving to Newcastle in 2012 and back to the Broncos in 2015.

"Darius won't leave now, he's at the end of his career," Bennett said. "The other boys are there because I was there, it's up to them with what they want to do."

Souths stunned the NRL on Thursday afternoon when they announced they had signed the seven-time premiership-winning coach on a two-year deal starting in 2020\. Wests Tigers were in the race for his signature but Bennett said they could not reach a deal.
\
\
"I did, I absolutely did, but they wanted a coach in '19 and I wasn't available. I'm committed to the Broncos, that hasn't changed. If they change their position at the Broncos, well, they'll have to come and have a talk to me about that," he said.

"I've said all along I've got a contract for 2019 and Souths recognise that and were happy to take me from 2020.

"It's my intention to fill that unless I'm told otherwise. It doesn't change anything for me but that's my position. If the Broncos have another position they'll have to address that - I know what my position is.

"It come about because Anthony [Seibold] was in discussion at the Broncos and I was told I wasn't required. Souths were feeling vulnerable that they were going to lose their coach and that's how it come about."

Bennett will be in his 70s by the time his three-year contract at the Rabbitohs expires but said it would not necessarily be his last in the Telstra Premiership.

"I'm not ruling that out, one thing I've always done is been responsible," Bennett said.

"I'm not going to go one more day than I should as coach if I lose enthusiasm and passion for it.

"Age is not my issue. I won't be defined by that, I'll be defined by my commitment and passion. When I realise that's not there anymore I'll be the first to let you know and I'll walk away. I don't want to let anyone down, especially a club who has taken a chance on me."

The opportunity to link with Rabbitohs skipper Greg Inglis for the first time in their respective careers was also a drawcard in luring Bennett to Redfern seven years after he was all but signed to .

"It's a great club, an icon club with wonderful players. I've worked with Sam, Tom and George in the English team.

"Greg Inglis is there, one of the all-time great players of our game. I had an opportunity to go there seven years ago and didn't take it. I didn't want to miss this one and grabbed it now."

If we don't get compo then we should have negotiated harder. It's as much about sending a message that we can't just be raided at the leisure of cashed up clubs that take a liking to our coach as it is about the finances. We need to push for both cash and a public acknowledgment that compensation was paid (without the amount needing to be made public).

We only agreed to let him go once we had a better option locked up. I think this sends a good message that it was still done on our terms. We never got shafted by Penrith here we got shafted by Ivan the terrible. When he couldn’t get a release to go to the panthers immediately he signed with them for 2021\. I think Pascoe and Go have handled it as good as can be with the cards Cleary dealt them.

Penrith, and Gus got exactly what they wanted, we were perfectly outplayed by them, and how you could say that we never got shafted by them is beyond belief,

They just lobbed a grenade our way , and sat back until we did what was inevitable for us.
Some people don’t like Gus, but he puts his club first, and makes things happen in the best way for the club,
I wish that we had someone more like that ,rather than the soppy lot that we have, who just lurch from one situation to another

Don’t think his handling of Cleary Griffin Cleary was the best way for his club . Certainly cost them a lot in payouts

They can afford it, it wouldn’t worry them at all,

One thing's for sure, in 3 years a lot of fans on here will pretend their crystal ball predicted madge's success or failure at WT, or that Bennett would have been better or worse.

I'd just like to get in early and say….

No. You had no idea. And no matter what happens, your opinion now and at any time in the future is totally irrelevant to the outcome, unless you work for ther club.
People pretending otherwise already are only clogging up the forum with nonsense. Please respect everyone's opinion, none of us know what will happen.

I happen to be in the majority, who seem to believe that despite imperfect progress, the trendline continues to move upwards over the last year or so, recent events included. Even if Madge backflips (pure speculation, don't stress), then I'm still confident that our future can leave us all feeling better about the club.

I must have been on a trip when the reporter confirmed it from Bennett on Ch9.

Here is a tangible; those players who follow Bennett to Souths would no doubt improve our team and performance dramatically had we signed Bennett. That is not speculation, crystal ball crap, sitting within a triangle conjuring up positive thought or the results of a trip to the local transcendental meditation centre with the Maharishi.

No buddy I do get it, I get it very well. You on the other hand not so much I think. 99% of the media reported Ivan Cleary meeting with Penrith. 99% of the media reported Cleary asking for a release. 99% of the media reported Cleary signing with Penrith from 2021\. 99% of the media reported we were in talks with Madge/Bennett. It’s been a consistent story the media has been running with since day one. A few on here ran with it by using common sense. You now want to jump on board so good for you. But this has been the story since day dot, not sure what different theories you were talking about , but if it makes you feel better then fantastic.

Not sure where you have been during all of this, but if you don’t believe that there was a continuos barrage of different theories by all the so-called journalists , commentators, and the public.
You must have been off the Planet,
Brent Read has ran so many guesses that he must have had trouble in remembering just what what his official opinion actually was..

The silliest Theory, was from the crowd that were convinced that Gold Bar Benny was on his way to Concord( or wherever our Home is this week)
That was never going to happen, but that story was being pushed all over the place

We were only ever linked to 2 coaches Bennett and Madge. What planet are you living on? What different theories are you talking about. It was one consistent story. Ivan meets with Penrith, asks for a release, Tigers say no, Cleary signs for 2021, tigers speak to Bennett/Madge, madge signs, Cleary released. Don’t try to re write history now.

For God's sake, let it go.

Huh.? Where did I say in my post that we were linked to more than two Coaches ( notcounting the one that was here already)

It wasn’t just us, that have turned themselves inside out to try and come out on top.
You obviously haven’t read much of the forum, newspapers, or watched much Tv , if you don’t think that there were daily doses of theories on Coaches movements Club activity , players moving with Coaches etc,
\
\
Good to see that you are still trying to push your version of the chronological order of the happenings, your trying hard, but just not really getting there.
Your version makes interesting reading, Pity if someone who was there at the time comes out with their real version,

These quotes must be fake then

“‘’The other boys are there because I was there and it’s up to them what they want to do.”

‘’When their contracts are up they’ll be free agents and they’ll make their own decisions.’’

The 68-year-old declared he would not actively pursue any of Brisbane’s free agents and would instead leave the ball in their court.

‘’I won’t be looking to do that (take players) but you’ve got to understand the ramifications,’’ he said.

Surely you're not that naïve GNR. It is the ultimate ____ ___ from Bennett and of course ego trip.

Wow…you invest so much in this place, and take so much on board...

Looks to be the same thing to me...anyway, carry on bunching your panties, you really are embarrassing yourself

Oh yeah....and get ypourself a sense of humour. (snickers) its a joke :unamused:

Never thought I'd see you comment about how much time a person spends on here

Anyway …... :unamused:

Thought you had a sense of humour

I'm not talking about time on here…. im talking about you dragging something up from four or five years ago... Meh! Take it all on board..hold a grudge,it's your choice

But for god sake just give the new bloke a fair go..

Well asking MOD's to kick you off is reasonably memorable Ink , you have to admit

And I do have a sense of humour , but when people play the person making the comment , no the comment itself it gets very tedious

Great, so we’re back to body language and mind reading. Facts don’t matter.

No don't try and put your slant on the matter. It has been reported on CH 9 from Bennett. We know the players names, those who will only sign for 1 year.

So he’s contradicting himself then. Because the quotes above state he won’t actively pursue any Broncos players.

MICHAEL Maguire will be unveiled as Wests Tigers coach as early as Sunday with the incoming mentor wanting to delay the announcement to concentrate on the Kiwis’ opening Test against England.

The Tigers had wanted to reveal Maguire as their new coach as early as Friday but Maguire asked his new club to delay the announcement by at least 48 hours.

It is expected by the end of Sunday Maguire will officially join the club on a three-year deal, replacing Ivan Cleary who will join Penrith. The Panthers are waiting to hit the go button on Cleary as soon as they are given the all-clear from the Tigers.

The Panthers and Tigers have come to a confidential settlement which will enable Cleary to re-join Penrith on a contract expected to be up to five years.

Maguire was in no mood to field questions about his impending return to the NRL when he fronted up at a press conference ahead of New Zealand’s Test against the Wayne Bennett-coached England.

The Sunday Telegraph has learnt the Tigers will not stand in Maguire’s way should he wish to continue as New Zealand coach after taking on the role this year.

Maguire has indicated he is keen to juggle both roles and said it would be “quite easy” to coach both teams.

“I’m keen to focus on this Kiwi game,” Maguire said in the lead-up to the Test.

“It’s been good being away and in camp.

“I’m looking forward to what we’re doing here. It’s very much about that. I’m going to continually hold that line.

I love coaching. I love the fact I’m part of this group.”

Jesse Sue would be glad that he has joined the Dogs for next season, if he collapsed in the sand dunes during sandhill warrior sessions imagine what Madge would've had in store for him this preseason.
Our boys would be nervous that hard task-master Madge is on his way

If you think Jesse would be happy Tui would have been on life support after 1 training session

Ok, so now that we’ve acquired Maguire any ideas on who if anyone he might bring along in terms of .coaching staff.

He has former Norths coach Ben Gardiner assisting him with the Kiwis, along with Nathan Cayless…
Im not sure who he had with him during his time at Souths but wasnt farahs bro a conditioner there?

One forum member has provided me some info, and I caught up with a mate who is prominantly placed at the chooks and friends with Madge who backed up some mail that Cayless will be his assistant coach at the Tigers. Conditioning staff is less clear at this stage.

But they will be paying two head coaches for the next 2 years which will likely put a serious dent in their Football Operations cap, is money that could have been used in other areas.
