I still can't understand what happened to Brooks. Based on the trend of 2018 and 2019, where he improved each year, it looked like this year he might push for a NSW jumper. Instead he's gone so far backwards he's starting to look like a slower 2015 Luke Brooks.

Yep. It’s got me stuffed. I don’t want to think it’s the coaching/game style but maybe that’s naive

Even the great Andrew Johns was running last in the Comp behind a badly beaten forward pack. Brooks needs some help up front.

I know that this LOOKS like a cop out and easy excuse and Brooks detractors will scoff but I think there is a lot of merit in this.

One of the telling aspects of Brooks game that has gone backwards is his kicking, particular on last tackle. One thing Ive noticed all the time and in particular against Penrith is that on the last, by the time the ball hits Brooks hands, he was seriously about to get smashed and Brooks was flat out getting any kick in.

What is the cause of this? Could be poor work by forwards resulting in a slow PTB on the last, could be that Brooks is not deep enough behind the line but the difference between him and Cleary was incredible, Cleary had all the time in the world and Brooks was rushed every time. The fact that Brooks is rushed is NOT Brooks fault unless the cause is he is not deep enough.

Not deep enough

Could very well be the case. I noticed with Cleary, he is MILE behind the line, running passing and kicking and as a result has a stack of time and looks good. Over the last few years there has be a chorus from fans and coaches screaming that Brooks has to "engage the line", "run more at the line" and he clearly has but I wonder if this is the result that he NEVER has time to run, pass or kick and I wonder if he stood deeper and only ran at the line sporadically if he would have more time to structure things as we all want?

The whole team plays to flat imo
I’d say it’s instructions from the coach ...just like Doohey defending in the line against Parra and being caught out ..

Most teams have gotten deeper this year, we have gotten flatter.

Blame Scomo.
We're simply flattening the curve!

Hopefully the SMH article where Madge is going to blood some of our young stars for the remainder of the year is true. Bringing in Madden and Simpkins, and possibly sitting out Benji and Harry. Can’t hurt to plan for next year.

Nothing happened. He was only ever good for 25% of games anyway. Even then he still threw hospital passes, kicked terribly and didn’t manage the game.
He is perhaps worse now, but if so it’s marginal.

At the end of the day a fair portion of our squad have reached their ceiling, they've had multiple coaches, we've got better high performance trainers on board this year and for players like Benji, Brooks, Joey L, Eiso, Reynolds, Packer, I could name more but there's no point, they just aren't going to improve, and they're not improving the team. We need to produce/buy more talent but there's slim pickings out there for next year. 2022 is realistically when we can attract some top shelf talent.

Maguire could have the Panthers squad and still finish outside the 8. It's all about being a good man manager and a creative game plan backed up by quality assistants. He got flicked from Souths and hasn't learnt a thing as to why but knows how to blame the players ?‍♂️
Next year will be the same rubbish from him and an extension would be another poor decision from the front office

So who should be our coach?

For 2022 Flanagan and if sooner Griffin

I'd prefer for us to avoid coaches suspended for invlovement in drugs and cheating.

Griffin would be ok
I thought a Flanagan was a used car salesman

Griffin maybe in the future but I would steer clear of Flanagan.

Would like to get Griffin as an assistant coach with a large portion of his role being involved with the junior pathways.

Mentioned that the other day.

Despite having tied hands, Madge and Hartigan's recruitment goals are the only indication of any smart or strategic planning from within the club atm.

I don't feel Benji deserves all the crtiticism he's copping- due to recent articles in circulation - as the management are ultimately responsible for operations and the club's infrastructures plans.
It's a disservice to the fans (and a long-serving player), if they're failing to reinforce their values and vision.

Benji has been lousy of late , but does deserve to go out playing in the top grade alongside Rowdy , our year is shot anyway ,Brooksy and Garner should make way

First cause - The Riff off side and their line speed.

Second cause - We had no line speed to put Tik Tok boy under pressure.

Pooper just claimed on 360 that there was a heated meeting with Madge and the playing group today. If there is any truth to what he was claiming then a large majority of the players reported that it’s not working and that feel they are walking on egg shells for fear that if they don’t perform that he will drop them. What tripe. If that happened, any and all of them that put their hands up and said that should never be seen in our first grade team again. Fancy being held to a standard.
Kent then went on to claim that some of the players are only getting played to put them in the shop window to try and move them on.

If players are scared of being dropped they should play better. They’re not used to being expected to play good

Once again it’s showing our loser mentality at the club. You can tell the difference in attitude between Doueihi, Luciano, Blore compared to a lot of the guys that were here already.

If any truth to it, just shows the mentality of this playing group. Weak as piss. Also, can read it as they (players) are trying to get rid of Maguire. Will be interesting to see who the board backs in this fight.

Agree, we don't have the cattle to play flat the way Madge wants. Our support play is abysmal too, likewise our second phase play which we should be utilising to bring someone like Brooks into play more often. Attack and defensive structures need a good overhaul. Hell, copy Melbourne and Easts, they're the blueprint.

Couldn’t agree more. If true, Lee should hire one of the Sydney tall ships for the end of season function and give Madge the opportunity to walk them one by one off the plank.
