AARON WOODS FOCUSES ON HIS MAIN GOAL
By Wayne Cousins

His name has been linked as a ‘Kangaroos bolter’ but for classy young Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods, he has another goal on his mind.

Woods has experienced the highs and lows of rugby league over the past two years. The 2010 season was written off due to a chronic hamstring injury that saw the very talented forward play just two games.

When 2011 pre-season training rolled around, Woods was just excited to be back with his mates. His first ‘surprise’ came with selection in the NSW Emerging Blues squad. Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens then rewarded him for a strong pre-season with his NRL debut against the Bulldogs in round one.

The record books now show Woods played 24 games in the Telstra Premiership. And just when Woods thought his season was over, came the “biggest shock” of them all – he was selected in the Australian train-on squad for the Four Nations tournament alongside Robbie Farah, Chris Lawrence and Keith Galloway.

Modest as they come, Woods still shakes his head in disbelief. He looks at the selection as a ‘win-win’ situation.

“I didn’t even know what to think of it at first. It wasn’t a goal of mine that’s for sure. My goal was just to play 3-5 first grade games especially after what I went through last season,’’ Woods said.

“It is good to be acknowledged and it makes me want to train even harder.

“If I get chosen in the final squad, words couldn’t describe how I would feel. To go on a tour with the Kangaroos would be a dream come true. I use to love watching those tours as a young boy.

“If I miss out, then it is still very positive for me to just be a part of it. I didn’t even think my name would be listed amongst those quality players.

“To be honest, my main goal is to get a (starting) Wests Tigers jersey first.

“I’d be very happy with that but I still have plenty of hard work to do.”

My main concern for Aaron would be overtraining
As this is his first full season in the NRL it may take some out of him for next season
Lets hope not I think Aaron was our biggest positive for the season

what are the odds of him being a regular starter though? He's an impressive player but BIg Keith and Blair will still be the preferred front-row for at least the next couple of years. It's a champagne problem for the Tigers, a front-row of rep players with one to spare. I just hope he doesn't outgrow us

That's if Blair is used as a staring prop Mista. I'd be running with:

8) Galloway
9) Farah
10)Woods
11) Ellis
12) Blair
13) Heighington

14) Fulton to cover either Blair or Ellis who will shift to prop when KG comes off
15) Groat/BMM/Begovich to replace Woods

If you're gonna take that route, if anything I'd put Woods in second row and leave Blair at prop. Shifting Blair from his best position seems a bit insane, whereas Woods is probably a bit more maleable

Great effort from Woods this year, he has the goods!

I don't know if he will be picked to tour though. But even making the train on squad is a decent achievement, so enjoy it mate.

The odds are very good for him. And what makes you think Blair is going to be used in the front row? And Woods is a Balmain junior through and through, players like him the club will push very hard to keep.

Blair has a far greater chance of playing in the second row compared to Woods.

The great thing about Blair is his versatility in the forwards where he can cover every position bar hooker. Sheens has started to shift Ellis to prop as part of his rotation, and I'm sure he'll continue to do this next year with Blair as well.

On a side note we would have our whole starting pack making an international squad, if this is our starting forward pack and it most likely will be.

Now that's never happened before!

That pack looks awesome on paper…..but imo Liam needs to be on the field for 80, especially sine we wont have Gibbsy next year.

Its about balance imo.

No such thing as over training.
When you make a rep squad these days you train full on from october on wards till the next season starts. There is no break in between for the elite squad players.
Most players train on their own when away from the squad anyway.Fitness becomes their drug of choice.
