Have you considered it just a ploy from his manager to deflect the focus away from his mercenary action. Why not come out from the get go and say i gonna leave.
All he did was use the club as leverage. Not the actions of a captain is it. How about writing about this point and being critical of how he strung the club along.

Meh, honestly not too cut up about it. Glad we're not paying him 800k to stay.
Hope he goes well at the Bulldogs. But I honestly reckon the Bulldogs are gonna stay an average team and he won't be winning any comps any time soon.

From the prolonging this contract saga out since last year when the offer from WT was first on the table, to dragging the club through the mud with every excuse for holding out to sign (who will the coach be? What direction is the club going? Etc.) and now this leaks the night before we play, you would think our "captain" has been trying to derail our season intentionally.
He deserves the dogs and they deserve him.
